Last Christmas, the family lined up to try Casa Verde. (You can tell by now that they love lines!)  Good thing there's Cotton On there at Up Town Center were we killed some waiting time.

They have tables outside only on one side.  They could utilize the space by adding some more on the other.

Their ambiance is a cabin style American diner.  It has a cozy soft lighting with wooden vibe.

Food

Casa Verde Favorites
brians ribs
Brian's Ribs (250 php)
The Brian's Ribs is so tender that it almost falls of the bone.  The sauce is tasty too.  For the price, it's a fulfilling portion.

the mighty ton
The Mighty Ton (888 php)
Woah! We were very much surprised with 12-inch The Mighty Ton burger with 1 kilo pure USDA tenderloin beef patty and more!  Check out how meaty it is!  It comes with fries on the side.  You can choose the flavor of your fries: barbecue, cheese and sour cream.

the mighty ton
The Mighty Ton (888 php)
The burger is complete with the works!  It has cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, sauteed onion, 125 grams of bacon and button mushrooms.  The bun is soft and moist too. Two years ago, the family tried the 12 Wheeler Burger at Garage 88 for the same price.  We were disappointed with it. Well, on the contrary, The Mighty Ton exceeded our expectations!  I highly suggest this for sharing for big groups.

Chicken

Golden Chicken Fingers (248 php)
When my mom ordered the Golden Chicken Fingers, I got the impression that it would be something ordinary.  But, I was wrong!  Among all our orders, we loved this the most.  This plate was swiped clean in an instant.

milky way
Milky Way (345 php)

My friend Berylle recommended the Milky Way as a must try novelty item. And, so we did!  Just like
The Mighty Ton, we were once again awed by the size of this!  To drink from it you have two choices: carry it off the table or stand up. =)  It's a bit heavy so you have to hold it with two hands. But, worry not because the glass is made of plastic.

milky way

It's basically a deliciously rich chocolate milk shake!  It's very good so we emptied it clean. =D

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Casa Verde is a must try American style diner.  Their huge sizes are fun to enjoy!  It gives you a chance to have a giant's feast. =)  The price is very reasonable too.  I'm glad they decided to open here in Manila so we don't need to go to Cebu to enjoy it.  As shown by the long lines, they are very welcome here.

Dulcelin Gourmet: Dining for their Delicious Dishes at UP Town Center

Last month, the family was eagerly checked out UP Town Center.  While passing by Dulcelin Gourmet (supposedly on our way to Cotton On), the staff was very kind and hospitable so my mom was convinced to abandon our wait list in another restaurant and try it.

dulcelin gourmet

As soon as we stepped in, we were quickly ushered to a freshly cleaned table and handed out the menu.  The lady server guided us through the best-selling items.

Food

Salads
red rice shiso duo
Red Rice Shiso Duo (240 php)
The Red Rice Shiso Duo is not your usual salad.  It has 2 pairs of seared tuna and soft shrimp with aji tamago quail egg on a bed of japanese rice mixed with Korean spices on shisho leaves.  Since it a duo, the other 2 pairs are the SRF wagyu skirt pickled radish with aji tamago quail egg on a bed of japanese rice mixed with Korean spices on shisho leaves.  Whether its the tuna or wagyu, I'd say it was cooked perfectly!  And, a mouthful of this is just astounding!

Mains

lengua
Lengua (330 php/Single Serve)

The Lengua has a zesty brown sauce with mushrooms, chorizo and olives.  This is another dish that is well executed from flavor to tenderness.

callos
Callos (250 php/Single Serve)
Everyone was wooed by the Callos as well.  It has generous servings of oh-so-soft ox tripe, chorizo and garbanos.

scotch egg
Scotch Egg (200 php/Single Serve)
I never thought an egg dish could earn all our approval until the moment we tried the Scotch Egg.  Although it looks humble, it was boasting with explosive flavors.  The tandem between the egg and the garlicky Italian sausage was superb.  It being served with miso corn rice and seaweed made the experience even better.

baked salmon
Baked Salmon (395 php/Single Serve)
The Baked Salmon is really of quality.  You can taste the freshness of Norwegian water with this pillow-soft salmon fillet. You can opt to choose it basted with either: wasabi mayo or parmesan pesto.  We got the former and was quite pleased with it.  My mom is very particular about the fishy scent and flavor.  She doesn't even eat the one from Contis.  But, she loved this!

dulcelin gourmetdulcelin gourmet cakes
They had a lot of pies and cakes available.  But, we had dessert plans elsewhere so we opted to skip this.

strawberry cake
Anyway, we've tried their famous Mango Torte and Strawberry Cake countless of times already since  little sister is so diligent in picking it up from Quezon City and bringing it home in Manila as long as she gets to eat their cake.  You can just check my previous review of those here.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
I have to admit, we didn't much from Dulcelin Gourmet because cooking is very much different art and science from baking.  But, boy were we surprised at how delicious their dishes are.  I highly recommend this place.  It's a must try!  Both thumbs up for the friendliness and excellent service as well.

Cafe Shibuya: Japanese Honey Toasts and Hot Cafe Drinks

Ever since my friend Sumi and I passed by Cafe Shibuya on our first visit to UP Town Center, we vowed to visit the place.  But, we never seem to fit it right on our schedule.  So after our family dinner at Dulcelin Gourmet, I suggested that we move have our desserts here.

cafe shibuya

It was swarming with dining so we had to wait for a table to be emptied.

Soon enough, customers began to leave one after another as it was past peak hours and we were able to appreciate its bright and cozy atmosphere.

Other Savories
croquettes
Croquettes (175 php)
When the Croquettes arrived, we thought it was a wrong order because we were there for dessert.  Then, my mom said it was hers as she was smiling sneakily!  So that's why she was silent when we were ordering and insisting, "No you guys do the ordering... I'm fine with anything..."  Only to find out she already ordered this while we were waiting outside. =/

croquettes
Croquettes (175 php)
My mom was like a gleeful little kid savoring every bite of these Croquettes.  It had a nice crunchy golden brown coating filled with creamy potato mash and ground beef.

Dessert Toast
strawberry matcha toast
Strawberry Matcha Toast (195 php/Baby)

The Strawberry Matcha Toast is honey toast dusted with matcha powder, topped with slices of cinnamon stawberry and a scoop of green tea ice cream.  It is also served with whipped cream with nuts on the side.  Since these had two of our favorites: matcha and strawberry, we loved this to the very last bit.

tiramisu
Tiramisu (185 php/Baby)

The Tiramisu is honey toast topped with Kahlua syrup, cream cheese, a scoop of coffee ice cream dusted with Ghirardelli chocolate powder.  It is likewise served with whipped cream with nuts on the side.

tiramisu
Tiramisu (185 php/Baby)

I saw shots from other blogs where the toasts where so soft and chewy that they could stretch them out like melted cheese.  So I was excited to take a cube out of my toast as soon as it was served but it just looked as plain, ordinary and messy as this. =(  Nevertheless, we it was still pleasantly warm, soft, chewy and buttery.  We liked this better than the Korean-style honey toast at Caffe Bene.  For the quality, I don't mind paying the significantly higher difference too.

Drinks

Hot
matcha green tea latte
Matcha Green Tea Latte (135 php)
The Matcha Green Tea Latte is foamy, rich and creamy.  It's a bit pricey for a small cup though.

Ghirardelli Chocolate
premium dark chocolate latte
Premium Dark Chocolate Latte (145 php)
The Premium Dark Chocolate Latte is rich and dark as expected from a Ghirardelli chocolate drink.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Cafe Shibuya is a must try for their Japanese honey toasts.  I'd love to come back and try their Savory Toasts next time.  Do you suggest I try their pasta too?  I like the cute and bright ambiance. But, I don't advise chilling at the place for long hours as it does not offer FREE WiFi and the seating is not cushioned.  Price is at par with food and beverages of popular coffee shop and cafe chains though.

Tonkatsu by Terazawa: Bistro Groups Katsu Concept

$
0
0
The Japanese craze tandem Katsu and Ramen still continuous!  Although I've tried a number of Ramen shops already, I still fall short with my Katsu experience so I finally paid a timely visit at Tonkatsu by Terazawa.

Tonkatsu by Terazawa is located in Greenbelt 2It replaced the closed down Ma Maison which is also a Bistro Group concept.  The interiors changed into a most traditional Japanese feel.

These pigs are cute.

They also have an outdoor area for smokers and sake drinkers.

Food
Each table has a complete set of condiments.  There's two choices of dressing for your unlimited cabbage.

The name on the pot matches the label on the sauce container.

Tonjiru
All sets are served with refillable shredded cabbage, Tonjiru (miso soup with pork) and your choice of Japanese rice or brown rice.

The Tonjiru which is a brown miso soup is delicious!  I think I had three refills of this.

Kurobuta Rosu Katsu
Tokusen Kurobuta Rosu Katsu Set (595 php)
The Tokusen Kurobuta Rosu Katsu Set is premium deep fried black pork loin set.  It makes use of pork meat from black hogs with layer of fats.

Tokusen Kurobuta Rosu Katsu Set (595 php)
It's slightly more tender than the normal variant.  It's slightly pinkish too.

Kakifurai (Deep Fried Oyster)
Oyster Set - Deep Fried Oysters 5 pcs. (525 php)
The Oyster Set is a set of 5 pcs. deep fried oysters.

Deep Fried Oysters
Upon first bite, I fell in love with the Deep Fried Oysters.  But, after awhile it gets a bit difficult to finish because of the overwhelming flavor.

Nagoyashi Meshi Miso Katsu (Deep Fried Pork Katsu Nagoya Style)
Negi Miso Rosu Katsu Set (445 php)
The family loved the Negi Miso Rosu Katsu Set which is rosu katsu with leeks and served with
with sweet miso sauce.

Negi Miso Rosu Katsu Set (445 php)
The Rosulooks similar to the Kurobuta Rosubut in terms of texture is slightly tougher.  The difference is not so much though.

Iroiro Katsu (Assorted Katsu)
Oyster, Prawn & White Fish Set (490 php)
Rather than ordering the Oyster Set, I highly recommend you go for theOyster, Prawn & White Fish Set.  It has 1 pc. oyster, 1 pc prawn and 1 pc white fresh.  It's more fun to eat with the variety.

White Fish
Everything is good especially the flaky White Fish.

Okonomi Katsu (Variety Katsu)
Homemade Katsu Curry Set (435 php)
The Homemade Katsu Curry Setiskatsu served with a bowl of Japanese curry.  If you love Japanese curry like I do, you'll enjoy this!

Dessert
Frozen Green Tea (155 php)
I'm glad they retained the Frozen Green Tea fromMa Maison because this is my favorite!  We simply can't have enough of this!  (We ordered one for each!)

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Tonkatsu by Terazawa offers katsu sets that are strategically priced similar to its competitors.  For the rosu and non-pork items, I have to say it's one of the best but I couldn't say the same for the KurobutaI think they have best refillable Tonjiru (miso soup with pork) though.  And, its good that they have a brown rice option. As I've notice from Bistro Group restaurant, it shares some items with other concepts and I like that.

Ever since I tried X046 Filipino Heritage Bistro, I've vowed to come back with the family.  Finally, the night came when we were craving for Filipino cuisine and near Makati so it was the perfect destination.

xo46 heritage bistro
Walking in, I was excited.  My family who is hardly excited over Filipino food was a bit skeptic.

But, seeing the awards made them a bit enthusiastic.

xo46 heritage bistro
The place reflects the authentic Filipino elegance.  I love every detail of its interiors from the chair to the lighting.

Lovebirds can opt to seat here.  But, no pair dined there that night cause we were all groupies that night.

Very nice plate mat right?

Food
xo46 heritage bistro puto
Complimentary Puto with Aligue and Yema Dip
Once we were done ordering, we were served a plateful of  Complimentary Puto with Aligue and Yema Dip.  The puto has three flavors: ube, pandan and plain.  This is one of the best puto I've ever tried!  It was soft and moist.  The dip wasn't much but since it's free, I can't really complain.

Spanish Tapas
callos a la madrilena
Callos A La Madrilena (545 php)
The Callos A La Madrilena is stewed ox tripe and pork hock with chickpeas and chorizos.  A serving is good for 3-4 persons. It is one of our family favorite dishes.  The ox tripe and pork hock were so tender and the stew was so flavorful!  Everyone gave their approval as soon as they tasted this.

Desserts
sapin sapin bahaghari
Sapin-Sapin Bahaghari (155 php)
The Sapin-Sapin Bahaghari is always feautured in magazines and blogs so we just had to check it out for ourselves.  It is served with honey wine and mantecado ice cream.  We've tried a lot of Sapin-sapin before but none of them offered an experience as astounding as this one.  The components just mesh wonderfully together.

halo halo
Halo-Halo (135 php)
Mom wanted to try their Guinomis but it was not available so the server suggested that we try their Halo-Halo instead.  We were so happy with it.  It is very tasty because of its bountiful ingredients.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict

X046 Filipino Heritage Bistro is the best Filipino-Spanish restaurant in the Metro.  usual serving size is for 2 to 4 persons.  The price is a bit expensive but considering the quality, service and ambiance, I'd give you a complete go signal!

Gavino's Japanese Donuts and More vs Mister Donut Cafe: Pon De Ring Battle

$
0
0
Don't we just love to compare?  So I just thought of adding a new category of comparative review which I will tag as "Battle".

pon de ring battle
I hope you like this style inspired by my favorite childhood fighting game. *Sorry I won't hint it out haha!  My ahia (older brother) and I used to play this a lot as our bonding activity.  Back then combos, we're really simple because controllers had few buttons.  And yet, I was so young and mukulit that ahia gets frustrated when I randomly pressed all the buttons just to make those combos.  I was like that for years before beginning to discover and memorize a couple of moves.  (Believe it or not, walk through and cheat guides then was rare)

I just love Pon De Rings.  In case you haven't seen, heard or tried one yet, they are Japanese styledonut.  It's a hybrid of a donut and a mochi so it delivers a whole new experience.  There are currently two competing brands in the Metro.

So let the Pon De Ring Battle between Gavino's Japanese Donuts & More and Mister Donut Cafe Begin!

Taste
mister donut pon de ring
Mister Donut Cafe Pon De Ring
The packaging is the same as that of a typical donut.  It is pretty good in keeping the Mister Donut Cafe Pon De Ring intact even after transport.

mister donut pon de ring
Mister Donut Cafe Pon De Ring: Sugar-Raised, Pistachio, Sanserival, Peanut Butter, Whitee Almonds and Glazed) (clockwise from top left)

In terms of flavors,Mister Donut Cafe Pon De Ring can be divided into two categories: Classic and Premium.

For Classic flavors there are: Glazed and Sugar-Raised .

While the Premium flavors include: White Almonds, Sans Rival, Cheese, Wafer Flakes, All Chocolate, Cookies and Cream, Gummy Bears, Candy Stars, Double Dutch, Rocky Road, Pistachio, Peanut Butter, Honey Sunflower, Cookies and Cream, and All Chocolate.  My personal favorite is the Pistachio.

The flavors of the Mister Donut Cafe Pon De Ring whether Classic or Premium are without fillings and only have coating on top and toppings like caramel, nuts and candies.  What's nice about the coatings and toppings is that they are light and not too sweet.  However, in terms of texture, its not very chewy.  In fact, the texture is almost not distinct from the ordinary donut.

gavinos pon de ring
Gavino's Pon De Ring
Gavino's box is also carton made just like Mister Donut's.

gavinos pon de ring
Gavino's Pon De Ring: Mint N' Chips, Green Tea Cheese Cake and Green Tea Glazed (clockwise from top left)
Like Mister Donut, Gavino's have two types of Pon De Ring: Regular and Premium.

The Regular flavors are: Sugar Raised, Glazed, Choco Glazed, Green Tea Glazed, Choco Sprinkle, Strawberry Sprinkle, Vanilla Sprinkle, Nutty Choco, Cinnamon Sugar and Choco Crunch.

For the Premium flavors they have: Red Velvet Pistachio,Choco Almond, Ensaymada, Cookies & Cream, Strawberry Gummy, M&M's, Triple Chocolate, Green Tea Cheesecake and Mint N' Chips (Christmas special).

Unlike Mister Donut, Gavino's Pon De Ring whether Regular or Premium have creamy fillings inside.  The texture is soft, sticky and chewy even after long and even after a day.  The chewiness is really similar to a mochi.  My personal favorite is the Green Tea Cheese Cake.

 Taste
Gavino's Japanese Donuts & More           Mister Donut Cafe

Price

For Mister Donut Cafe the price for the single Classic is 29 php and Premium is 39 php.  That is exactly the same with Gavino's.  For Gavino's, the single Regular is 29 php and Premium is 39 php.

ForMister Donut Cafe the price for the half dozen Classic is 160 php and Premium is 220 php.  While for Gavino's, the half dozen Regular is 162 php and Premium is 222 php.  Gavino's is just 2 php higher which is an immaterial amount.

ForMister Donut Cafe the price for a dozen Classic is 300 php and Premium is 220 php.  That is the same as Gavino's once again.  For Gavino's, a dozen Regular is 300 php and Premium is 420 php.

While the pricing may seem similar, in truth, Mister Donut is more expensive because it only has two items for Classics and the rest are the more expensively priced Premiums.  On the other hand, most of Gavino's items are Regulars and they even have a delicious and rich filling inside their Pon De Rings which is of course, more expensive than the air and dough of Mister Donut's Pon De Rings.

Price
Gavino's Japanese Donuts & More         Mister Donut Cafe

Other Considerations
Gavino's Japanese Donuts & More have more branches which makes it more accessible.  Most of its branches are only food stalls.  But, seating is available for its Greenhills Town Center branch.  While Mister Donut Cafe only has one branch.  But, Mister Donut Cafe offers a typical cafe ambiance with WiFi and it's open 24 hours a day.

Tsinoy Food Battle Winner

Before I announce the winner, I just want to share how much of a game geek I was...  When we were young, our mom never let's us in any store with kitchen products fearing we might break stuff so she always leaves us with our yayas to play arcade games.  Ahia would always go for the fighting games.  (They are the same ones we have at home but he says he likes the buttons and joystick better.  I never understood why.) On the other hand, I preferred shooting and racing games.  Because the "Shoot the Duck" and "Grand Prix: F-1 Race" was of course lame compared to the games in the arcade.  I was always delighted to put my own "AAA" on the top score lol =))

And... The winner of the Pon De Ring Battle is Gavino's Japanese Donuts & More!

Although our family has a wide array of cuisine interests, we can't help but go back to trace our roots and try more of Chinese cuisine.  One ordinary evening, we decided to try the new Tien-Tien Hot Pot Restaurant along Makati Avenue.

We begun our meal with West Lake Beef Cream.  This is my first time to try this and I loved it!

The Steamed Chicken with Mushroom is one of my favorite Chinese dishes!  For the price, I'm quite pleased with the generous serving portions.

The Lo Hon Chay is a platter filled with assorted vegetables.  The mix-match of texture makes this delightful to eat.  It was naturally flavorful too.

For our staple, we went for the classic Yang Chow Fried Rice which didn't disappoint.  It has bountiful toppings.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict

Korean Palace: Prestigious Korean Restaurant at the Heart of Remedios Cirle and Malate

When I think of classic Korean restaurant in Malate, two names comes to my mind: Korean Palace for authentic Korean dishes and Korean Village for affordable Korean grilled dishes.

korean palace
It's a usual day and we were craving for Bibimbap so we took a short drive to Korean Palace located at the heart of Remedios Circle.  It has a very good location that is hard to miss.  Being a next door neighbor, I must've been here hundreds of time and I've seen how it was decorated countless of times.  Usual diners here are expats and local Koreans so that speaks for the food quality and authenticity right?  Sometimes they smoke a lot though so you can request a private room.

Food

After taking our orders, we were served our Complimentary Banchan.  Every item is delicious!

bibimbap

Their Bibimbap is slightly higher than average but as you can see it's very generous with the ingredients.  This is a satisfying meal!

dolsot bibimbap

But, the Dolsot Bibimbap is a much better choice.  It has shrimps and the egg is not fried but cooked in the stoneware itself.

Every one is served their Complimentary Soup as well.

If that Complimentary Soup is too plain for you, the Seoul Neong Tang orBeef soup is a great option.  It's rich in flavor and lots of tender beef meat beneath the green onions.

We had enjoy the sweet Complimentary Pineapple for dessert.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Korean Palace has always been a prestigious Korean restaurant at the heart of Remedios Cirle.  It's quality is still the same over the years and it will continue to draw new customers as well as maintain the patronage of its loyal diners.

Ramen Ichiban-Kan is the favorite JapaneseRamen House of the family.  We've been patrons of this for many years now.  In fact, if you ask them which ramen house they could visit everyday, hands down their reply would always be Ramen Ichiban-Kan.

 ramen ichiban kan
Aside from the big yellow sign, there are no other clues that will hint you to it.  But, it's actually just opposite the side of Ukkokei Ramen Ron also in Mabini Malate

ramen ichiban kan
Although quite spacious, it only houses a few wooden tables to afford its diners some privacy.  Most diners here are Japanese expects.

Ichiban-Kan Ramen (200 php)
The Ichiban-Kan Ramen comes with the basic ingredients: naruto (fish cake), chopped negi (leeks), nori (seaweed) and menma (bamboo shoots).  Their broth is light and refreshing.  They fall short with the noodles for me but my family loves it.

Another favorite option for me is their Curry Set which includes Curry Rice individually priced at 270 php and a Kakuni Ramen individually priced at 320 phpso I think this is the best bargain from the menu.  They make use of the finest quality Japanese rice, their curry blend is superb, the kakuni ramen is similar to the Ichiban-Kan Ramen but with an extrakakuni(pork belly slice).

I've heard a lot of raves about California Pizza Kitchen as a legendary pizza brand that originated in Beverly Hills in 1985.  Its success paved way to its expansion to more than 250 locations in more than 30 states and 11 counties.  So I've finally tried it out and here's my pizza story!

california pizza kitchen
It was just an ordinary school day when I was invited by some friends to dine at California Pizza Kitchenat Greenbelt 5

As it was my first time, I was amazed that it had a nice bar...

and cozy and chiq ambiance...  It's the kind of venue where you can celebrate occasions, have date or business meetings.

Food

Appetizers

For starters, we had the Spinach Artichoke Dip which was served with purple and yellow corn tortilla chips.  As this was my favorite dip variant and they made it especially good, I allowed myself to indulge!

Salad
thai crunch
Thai Crunch (575 php/Full)
I consider the Thai Crunch as a not-your-ordinary type of salad.  They've not much greens on it and it's a nice medley of citrusy and nutty flavors.  It's also delivers a wild and crunchy toothsome experience.

Original Hand-Tossed Pizzas

They say a visit at California Pizza Kitchen is never complete without The Original BBQ Chicken.  The rich legendary barbecue chicken cubes are really something that makes this dish a must-try.  The pizza dough is also soft, warm and chewy!

Cheese lovers would definitely love the Five Cheese + Fresh Tomato.  This is one gooey treat with a zesty tone to boot.

Desserts

S'mores Pizza (170 php)
My girl friends went gaga over the S'mores Pizza!  Who wouldn't right?  It was buttered thin crust pizza topped with crushed graham cracker, melted dark Belgian chocolate, marshmallows and vanilla ice cream.

Drinks

If you think that Kimukatsu is just another Katsu chain, I'm telling you straight out it isn't!  Kimukatsu offers 25 Layers of Mille-Feuille Katsu goodness that comes in 7 different flavors.

kimukatsu

Compared to its neighboring restaurants, Kimukatsu's facade may not seem as noticeable with only the hint of its small "Kimukatsu" lighted sign against the blackness.

kimukatsu

But once you step in, you'd be awed with the beauty of the place.  It has glowing lanterns and a cherry blossom wall.  The plastic chairs are not only stylish but are very sturdy too.

kimukatsu

They also have private rooms available.  It can also be merged into one for big groups.

The Black Pepper has layers of pepper before the coating.  It was a bit dry but nevertheless simple but nice.

Go Greek!: Affordable Greek Dishes at Glorietta Food Choices

$
0
0
One our favorite sisterly bonding is watching movies.  So one time, me and little sis reserved our tickets at Glorietta 4.  Due to our tight schedule, we opted for a quick dinner at the Glorietta 4 Food Choices.  That is actually our usual practice when confronted with a similar circumstance because the food options there are by far better than the usual mall food courts

go greek
Having dined at Go Greek! before, I suggested that we eat there.  It's a sister company of Cyma.  But, the price here is cheaper although the choices are limited.

go greek
Being the elder sister, its customary that I'm the one to treat her so yes price was a consideration in the selection. =p  But, I also assured that it would pass her high standards or she'll make endless parinig (remarks) until we reach home for sure.

go greek
So I let her choose what she wants.

go greek
So the dishes are mostly displayed and preheated or re-roasted prior to serving.  We waited 10 minutes for our orders to be grilled. They adopt a self service style which is typical with food courts.

Food

Gyros
chicken gyros
Chicken Gyros (115 php)
My sister chose the Chicken Gyros.  She was quite pleased with the tenderness and tastiness of the slow-roasted chicken bits (said to be fillet).  The pita bread is warm and soft too.  But, we both agreed that the yogurt sauce is a little watery.

Greek Kebab
seafood kebab
Seafood Kebab (135 php)
I, on the other hand, chose the Seafood Kebab.  It was fish kebab with salates (salad), pita, hot sauce and yogurt sauce.  I thought this is a more fulfilling and balanced meal than the gyros.  The fish kebab was not dry too which I liked.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Go Greek! is the most affordable Greek option you can find in the Metro.  The quality is what you pay for though.  Can't say that the ingredients are fresh but, at least the food is served hot.

Writers Bar: My Monday Glam Hatters Afternoon Tea Party at Raffles Hotel Manila

$

0
Ever since I glanced upon Writers Bar when we dined at Spectrum, I have long been wishing to come back for it.  There's just something about its grandeur, solemnity and coziness that calls upon the bookish and geek side of me.

writers bar
My wish was granted when my friend Sumi invited for an afternoon tea.

writers bar
Writers Bar at the Raffles Hotel Manila is a modern interpretation of the original Writers Bar in Singapore.  It is styled as a library with real books from various writers who frequented Writers Bar like Ernest Hemingway.

Afternoon Tea
This is actually only my second time to enjoy an afternoon tea. After trying it once, I'm still in the process of getting acquainted with it.  According to the Writers Bar menu, the idea of an Afternoon Tea originated from Anna Maria, the 7th Duchess of Bedford who invited friends over for tea after having a sinking feeling one afternoon.  Another interesting fact I learned from the menu is that prior to the Afternoon Tea, the English only had two main meals: breakfast (consisting of ale, bread and beef) and dinner.

Glam Hatters Afternoon Tea
glam hatters
As our visit was on a Monday afternoon, we availed of the Glam Hatters Afternoon Tea which is available every Mondays from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for only 1,150++ php.  It's actually the same as the Raffles Classic but with the perks of wearing a stylish hat and you also get a take home treat.

The Raffles Classic is good for two so everything is served in pairs!  It's one fulfilling endeavor I promise you!  We took hours of chatting, drinking and munching to finish the whole course.

The Seasonal Tartlets had Lemon Meringe, Blueberries and Black Currant Tart and Raspberries and Berries Tart.  I really can't choose among them because all of them were delightful.

pate de choux
Pâte à Choux
Pâte à Choux is a light puff pastry.  Choux actually means cabbage in French which is what the dough layers inside the pastry looks like.  We had the Gianduja religiuse, Vanilla banana eclair and Orange choux.

cakes macarons
Cakes and Signature Tea Macarons
Last but definitely not the least are the Cakes and Signature Tea Macarons.  The Flourless Milk Chocolate Guanaja Cake with gold toppings is a chocolate lovers dream!  To simply reminisce about it makes my mouth water.  But, the Pistacho Orange Cake is also as indulgent.  We also had the Peppermint and Ube (instead of Earl Grey) macarons.

harney sons tea
Choice of Harney & Sons Tea
For beverage, you can have unlimited brewed coffee or your choice of tea.  Since the tea at Writers Barare specially blended by Harney & Sons, we opted to try as much of it as we can.   There have a variety of Black Teas, White Teas, Green Teas, Oolong-Blue Teas and Herbal Teas.  Our favorites are the Genmaicha, Roiboos Chai and White Vanilla Grapefruit.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Writers Bar offers a one of a kind experience especially in terms of Afternoon Tea. Avail of the Glam Hatter Afternoon Tea for a truly wonderful time.  I've seen girl friends as well as daters avail of it. Its even great as a family activity.  In fact, during our visit I saw a family having fun with their cute little daughter in a beautiful dress that matched her hat.

Ketchup Food Community: Filipino Comfort Food at Rancho Norte and Thai at Happy Tummy

Ketchup Food Community is a food community composed of five different restaurants specializing in different cuisines: Canto (American), Rancho Norte (FilipinoComfort Food), Happy Tummy (Thai), Rumah Sate (Indonesian and Malaysian) and Green Pepper (Gourmet)

It is located along Romulo Drive near the Wright Park Horse Back Riding Stables in Baguio City.  They offer a nice native but cozy ambiance so you can enjoy your meal in the cool climate of Baguio City.

What I really like about the concept is  that its a very friendly community that allows you to order in any of the restaurants regardless where you dine and you will be billed separately.  As part of the Baguio Food Tour 2014 #BFT2014 organized by my friends Ramil and Edgar of Pinasmuna.com, I was able to try Rancho NorteandHappy Tummy.  I'll definitely come back for the rest. =)

Appetizers
The Appetizers are also great as beer match or "pulutan"
Tapang Kabayo (168 php)
I'm not sure if I've eaten horse meat before but this has definitely won me over.  Woo!  I never thought that Tapang Kabayo could be so addictively spicy, clean tasting and tender.  This is a must try at Rancho Norte!

Tapang Usa (168 php)
As far as deer meat goes, I've tried Kalderetang Usa before but it's a first for Tapang Usa.  Regardless of the type of cooking, I could sense that distinct smell and texture of the deer meat.  I personally prefer the Tapang Kabayo by far comparison.

Vegetable
Pinakbet with Bagnet (188 php)
My mom being a native of Ilocos, we have been cooking Pinakbet with Bagnet at home all my life so you could say I set the bar high when it comes to it.  Yet, here I am with nothing but praise for the crisp of the bagnet skin, the soft and tender fatty meat that almost melts in your moth and tasty vegetables.

Soup
Sinigang na Baboy (168 php)
I've noticed that there are two types of Sinigang: clear soup and thick soup.  The Sinigang na Baboy is of the latter which I'm not too fond of.  But, the tender pork is the one that made me appreciate this dish.

Combo Meals (Served with Pinoy Salad and Drinks: Rancho or Red Tea, Gulaman or Brewed Coffee)

Crispy Sisig Meal (148 php)
What sets their Crispy Sisig apart from other sisig is the bagnet component.  You get to enjoy crunchiness in every bite instead of bouncy thick skin and fats.  I really liked this version.

Happy Tummy
Crispy Tilapia in Tamarind Sauce (200 php/M)
The Crispy Tilapia in Tamarind Sauce is crispylicious!  We all enjoyed it with its not-so-sweet and wonderfully tangy tamarind sauce.

Sticky Rice with Mango (80 php)
If you're a regular reader, you'd know that I'm always raving for my favorite dessert dish: Sticky Rice with Mango.  Yes, I'm raving for this too!

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Rancho Norte serves affordable but very delicious Filipino Comfort Food that's great for sharing!  I'm rarely impressed with Filipino dishes and this is one of those moments.

Happy Tummy offers authentic Thai cuisine also at a budget friendly range.  I highly recommend it.  In fact, I want to try more of their dishes soon.

Old Penang RS Restaurant: Malaysian Cuisine with Rasa Sayang at Newport Mall in Pasay

$
0
0
We were on a rush for a movie at Newport Mall so we decided to have a quick dinner at the Old Penang RS Restaurant.  Compared to other restaurants in there, it seemed to serve fast and the prices are more affordable. "RS" stands for Rasa Sayang which means loving feeling.  Let's see if we'll feel that after our dinner...

The place was packed but they had a quick turnover because of their good service.

Food

Rice
Nasi Lemak (245 php)
It's actually my first time ever to try Nasi Lemak which is the National dish of Malaysia.  This variant comes with beef rendang, a cup of rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaves, egg, cucumber with belachan (shrimp paste), egg and sambal sotong (spicy cuttlefish).  The beef rendang is spicy beef stew with coconut milk.  It is very tender and delicious!

Noodles
Famous Penang Char Kway Teow (245 php)

The Famous Penang Char Kway Teow is fried rice noodle strips with prawns, egg, bean sprouts, deshelled cockles (seawater clams) and Chinese sausage.  I've tried a lot of version of char kway teow and I must say this is one of the best!  It was very rich in flavor.

Chicken Noodle Soup (220 php)

The Chicken Noodle Soup is served with  toasted garlic, green onions, chicken strips and fish balls.  This is similar to the Chinese chicken mami but has bolder chicken broth.

Dessert
Penang Ice Kacang with Ice Cream (110 php)

Being a fan of ice kacang, we were quite excited for the Penang Ice Kacang with Ice Cream. We didn't even mind if we got late for our movie.  But when it came, it wasn't as extravaggant as we'd hope.  It was a big bowl filled with crushed ice, milk, red bean, sweet corn and ice cream with strawberry syrup on top.  It was just okay...

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
As there aren't much Malaysian restaurants inManila, Old Penang RS Restaurant is a great way to start with.  Their pricing is definitely street or hawker price but compare to other restaurants in Newport Mall, this is already reasonable.  The food quality and service is worth paying for.

The third stop for the Baguio Food Tour 2014(#BFT2014) is Alfoncito's Place at Kisad Road.
alfoncitos place
It's found on the basement so we were all clueless on what to expect.

alfoncitos place
I was really amazed at how artsy and quaint the place was.  It had colorful paper butterflies, wall arts, ginger bread house and all sorts of mix match that work well together.

alfoncitos place
I even found their clock to be cool.

alfoncitos place
It's the first time I've seen a cafe with a sign like this.  What a great idea.

alfoncitos place
While hands off my gadgets, completely offline and disconnected, I kept myself busy with their place mat which doubles as a place mat.  When I was in grade school, we always had this bulletin board labelled "Best in Art" where all the best works are plastered for display.  I'm proud to say I got my works hanged there sometimes.  I kind of miss showing my artistic side... so what do you think? =p

Food

Antipasti
chicken crostini
Chicken Crostini (100 php)
The Chicken Crostini is a serving of 3 toasted country bread topped with chicken strip, tomato slice, melted cheese and pesto.  It was a nice crunchy starter.

One of my favorite items during our visit was the Barbecue Pork Panini with mixed green salad on the side.

Pasta
linguini pesto

The Linguini al Pesto with Oven-Baked Herbed Chicken was loved by my companions.  The pasta was very tasty and the Oven-Baked Herbed Chicken strips were moist, tender and delicious too.

aglio olive
Spaghetti al Aglio e Olive (155 php)
The Spaghetti al Aglio e Olive is spiced with chili and garlic with lots of olives!  I really enjoy the spicy garlicky flavor of this dish!

bolognese
Penne Alla Bolognese(180 php)
Their Penne Alla Bolognese is a great interpretation of my classic favorite pasta dish.  I love that has a nice blend of tanginess.  The meatball was also good!

Heavenly Desserts

I really enjoyed their silky and fluffy crepes!  My friends and I each had our own favorites.  I loved the Apple and Cinnamon Crepe because it has a nice balance of sweet and spice.

Drinks

Something Hot...
irish creme
Irish Creme (80 php)
Everyone seemed to enjoy their drinks but I felt my Irish Creme was a bit bland and diluted.

cucumber twist
Cucumber Twist (50 php/glass)
The Cucumber Twist is a cucumber, mint and lemon flavored Italian soda.  It was a refreshing drink.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
I really Alfoncito's Place because it makes me feel laid back and relaxed.  Food is quite affordable too.  My friends were really please with their Oatmeal Shakes so I guess I should try that on my next visit.

During our Baguio Food Tour 2014 (#BFT2014), we stayed at Azalea Residence.  I'm glad with the group's selection because it acquainted me with this praiseworthy hotel.  They offer top-notch  service and facilities.  In fact, I found it difficult to get up once I lay on their bed because it's so soft and cozy!  There's cable TV in every room.  There's a stove, fridge and even microwave over.  The staffs are very friendly and courteous too.  And as a foodie, of course, I'm very thrilled to share about Tradisyon by Azalea's Breakfast Buffet.

Tradisyon by Azalea is located on the ground floor of Azalea residences.  It specializes in FilipinoComfort Food.

Omelet Station
Upon walking in, the first thing you'll encounter is the Omelet Station.  You can request your style of omelet or egg here.  Due to the numerous buffet options, I opted for an egg instead to spare my tummy from being too stuffed.
