Jade Garden: The Country’s First Fine Dining Chinese Restaurant is Back!

One of the restaurants we used to frequent during my childhood is Jade Garden.  Back in those days, digital cameras weren't out in the market yet so it was really cool that they take our photos for free and give them as a complimentary together with a paper photo frame.  I have a lot of those stored somewhere. =))

jade garden

Aside from being the country’s first fine dining Chinese Restaurant, Jade Garden also specializes in authentic Cantonese cuisine which is hardly evident in the Philippines.  My mom is Fookienese as as such she so don't cook Cantonese Cuisine at home.  So whenver  my Cantonese father would crave for Cantonese cuisine and my little sisters would miss their complimentary snow ball dessert, we would dine there.

After being gone for nearly a decade, I'm glad that Jade Garden has decided to reopen in a 1000-square meter area in Glorietta 2.  It still has the same fine dining ambiance but with a more modern and lively take.

They also have six spacious private function rooms.

Food
According to their Restaurant Manager Raymond Ho, "Cantonese cooking is characterized primarily by its freshness. Traditionally, dishes that we serve have a light taste and are not oily.  We make sure our ingredients are of premium quality. If you don’t have good ingredients to start with, you can’t make a good dish."  Cantonese cuisine is also referred to as the "Chiu Chow style" so you'll see that a lot in their menu.

For starters we had the Roasted Suckling Pig.  It was sinful but who can resist this!

The Prawns & Dried Scallop with Beancurd Soup is delicious as well.  It was pleasantly mild tasting with comforting texture.

Mini Fortune Poon Chai (1,400/Good for 4)
The Mini Fortune Poon Chai is traditionally eaten during Chinese occasions.  The size of the container gets biggers and more ingredients are added as more people are joining the feast.  This one is good for four and contains: Honey Glazed Barbecued Pork, Soy Sauce Marinated Chicken, Black Mushrooms, Brocolli, Fresh Suaje, Sea Cucumber and Beancurd Stick.  You can add 350 php for every additional person.

Steamed Diced Chicken in Egg White Wraps "Chiu Chow" (720 php/6 pieces)
My favorite among our orders would probably be the Steamed Diced Chicken in Egg White Wraps "Chiu Chow". This requires an order in advance.  You can also order per piece at 120 php.

If you're an avid reader, you would probably know that Fookien Fried Rice is my ultimate fried rice favorite.  I can even eat that alone without any viand.  Well, the Fookien Seafood Rice in Abalone Sauce Casserole is an upgraded version of that so you can imagine my glee!

Hot Sweetened Almond Puree with Dumpling
The Hot Sweetened Almond Puree with Dumpling is are dumplings with black bean paste swimming in almond puree.  I liked it very much because it is similar to the peanut dumplings that my family eats every 15th of January in the Chinese Lunar Calendar as a tradition I've always enjoyed that and even look forward to it year by year.  My companions were not as ecstatic as me though.

As this is not my first review of this place.  You can refer to my old post for supplemental details as I go on with what we had a few weeks ago for the 35th celebration of Cafe Adriatico.  Knowing that their food is consistently good and its located so near my home, I'd be a biggest fool if I declined their warm invite.

From a humble gyoza stand in Osaka in 1969, Osaka Ohsho has earned it's distinction as the world's number 1 gyoza restaurant.  It has grown to more than 360 locations across Japanese and is expanding internationally as well.  It's now finally in the Philippines!

Last Saturday, the family wanted to check out the new Megamall Fashion Hall Building D.  We decided to try Osaka Ohsho which had a lot of people queued outside.

Food
gyoza
Original (350 php/12 pcs.), Cheese (380 php/12 pcs.) and Nori Gyoza (380 php/12 pcs.)
Of course, the first thing we ordered are their Gyoza which comes in three flavors:
  • Original - enjoy the succulent meaty flavor
  • Cheese- oozing with cheesy goodness
  • Nori Gyoza - added crunchiness and seaweed flavor

Each Gyoza is cooked perfectly see!

Appetizers & Salads

Black Vinegar Chicken (325 php)

I liked the Black Vinegar Chicken because it was an interesting play of sweet and sourness.  Well, it was more on the latter and I wouldn't have preferred it in any other way.  The chicken was also very juicy.

Agemono (Deep-Fried)
chicken karaage
Japanese Style Chicken Karaage with Grated Radish (330 php)
My mom enjoyed the Japanese Style Chicken Karaage with Grated Radish because she enjoys light tasting dishes.  The grated radish was a great complement for the crunchy and juicy crispy-coated fried chicken.

I enjoyed the fluffy texture of the egg together with the slightly thick sauce of the Fuwatoro Tenshin Han.  But, the price is a bit high even if a serving is good for two.

black chahan
Black Chahan (250 php)
The Black Chahan is good for two but I wouldn't mind finishing it alone.  Everyone gave this a big thumbs up!

For all their rice dishes, you can upgrade to unlimited rice for only 25 php.  But, the rice refill is the plain koshihikari rice.

Desserts

Banana Tempura with Homemade Japanese Ice Cream (330 php)
For dessert, we had the Banana Tempura with Homemade Japanese Ice Cream.  It was a delightful way to end a meal.

Drinks

I also tried the Matcha Milk Smoothie.  It was sweet and creamy.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Trying our Osaka Ohsho's Gyoza offered in various flavors is a fun experience!  The food quality is pretty good.  You have to pay a bit for it though.

Banzai The Great Teppanyaki Theater: Tour Through My Authentic Japanese Buffet Experience

$

Last Monday, I was invited to try the dishes at the Banzai The Great Teppanyaki Theater in San Miguel by the Bay at SM Mall of Asia.  It's between Buffet 101 and The Eye of MOA. Unlike other buffets, this is specialized with Japanese cuisine.  It also has a the Great Teppanyaki Theater.

banzai great teppanyaki theater

Upon entry, I was immediately impressed with it's creative Japanese interiors.  The wooden tables with matching well-designed wooden chairs gave a warm and cozy feel.  The dinning areas had different themes.  This side had a Tokyo City lights on its wall.  It will probably be lively at night.

These area looks like a sumo ring.  The portion on the far end is the modern Japanese area.

Trick Art Gallery
banzai great teppanyaki theater
My pretty friend Hana and golden boy Justin
For those who are waiting in line or finished dining, you can entertain yourselves with their Trick Art Gallery.  They have a lot of costumes like Kimonos, Ninja Suits, Sumo Suits and Sumo Wigs available.  My friends and I had a lot of fun matching out costumes with their bicycle props and wall paintings.

The Great Teppanyaki Show

Another plus for Banzaiis that they have long lunch and dinner hours.  The lunch time is from 10 am to 3 pm and the dinner time is from 5 pm to 10 pm.  And, every 2:30 pm and 7:30 pm, there is the Great Teppanyaki Show!  Check my videos to see some of their performance. But of course, watching it live is better.  =)

Food
I dedicate this tour to my friend Con, who is more foodie than I am and has been more than eager to see what's in store before he visits it next week.

Teppanyaki Station

banzai great teppanyaki theater
I'll start with the Teppanyaki Station which is the highlight ofBanzai.

banzai great teppanyaki theater
As you can see, they use fresh ingredients and authentic Japanese sauces.  When you order, they will give you a number and they will deliver it on your table.  The only problem with this system is that it's difficult for the waiters to see which of the many tables has the number with no number holders...

The Teppanyaki Station is divided into different sections serving various dishes such as:
Meat (Beef Misono,Beef Teppan,Chicken Teppan),Okonomiyaki (Bacon Okomiyakiand Squid Okonomiyaki), Noodles, Rice and Vegetables (Yakisoba,Yakiudon, Vegetables,Yasai Itameand Fried Rice)and Seafood (Ebi Teppan,Salmon Teppan,Dory Teppan,Tuna Teppan,
Oysters andIka Teppan)

You can check the freshness because their showcased on ice.

Oyster and Ika Teppan
The Ebi,Salmon, Oyster and Ika Teppan were delicious as expected from their expert chefs who made use of the freshest ingredients.  The Ika was soft and tender!  Be careful in ordering too much though.  This plate is only one order of each but look at how many they are!

Okonomiyaki Station
banzai great teppanyaki theater
Squid Okonomiyaki
I tried both the Bacon and Squid Okonomiyaki which looked exactly the same.  Since I couldn't taste the bacon flavor in the former, I prefer the classic Squid Okonomiyaki.

Noodles, Rice and Vegetables

Yasai Itame
The Yasai Itame is really crunchy and bursting with sweet natural flavors.

Beyond Teppanyaki

banzai great teppanyaki theater
Yes, they have more than teppanyaki to offer.

Salad Station
banzai great teppanyaki theater
Spicy Tuna Salad, Cold Beansprout Salad with Sesame, Seaweed Salad, Japanese Potato Salad and Chicken Teriyaki Salad
They have a lot of Japanese salad varieties!  Everything looked good!  I would recommend smaller cuts on the Japanese Potato Salad though.  I wanted to try it but the potatoes are as big as ice cubes and eggs were sliced only in halves.
banzai great teppanyaki theater
Big Salad Station
They have an even wider selection for their Big Salad Station which is their version of the classic make-your-own salad bar.  The toppings (all properly labelled) are: carrots, white onions, leeks, fried wanton wrapper, peanut, mango, orange, sweet corn, mixed goma (black and plain sesame), radish, lettuce and more.  The Japanese dressings available are: Akira Kyuru Dressing, Spicy Mayo Dressing, Miso Dressing and Sesame Dressing.

Japanese Caesar Salad StationNext to the Big Salad Station is the Japanese Caesar Salad Station with bacon, croutons, crunchy kani, parmesan cheese, lettuce and caesar dressing.

Roll Station

banzai great teppanyaki theater
I like their system of limiting their rolls in display because they have chefs on standby for restocking anyway.  This assures the freshness of their rolls.  But, some labels on these would be more helpful.

Sushi Station
banzai great teppanyaki theater
Tuna (Maguro) Sushi, Salmon (Sake) Sushi, Squid (Ika) Sushi, Yellow Tail (Hamachi) Sushi, Octopus (Tako) Sushi, Prawn (Ebi) Sushi, Egg (Tamago) Sushi and Crabstick (Kani) Sushi

Ramen Station

If only I wasn't stuffed to the limit, I'd try their ramen.  My friends kept on raving about it.  They have almost all basic types of ramen:Shoyu Ramen,Miso Ramen, Tonkatsu Ramen, Chasyu Ramen and
Tantanmen.

I was really impressed with their Pork Gyoza, Vegetable GyozaandChicken Gyoza.  It's at par with those offered ala carte in other authentic Japanese restaurants and probably the best gyoza ever offered in buffets.  The crunchy thin crust Shrimp and Enoki Pizza is also a gastronomic delight!

Miso Soup and Gohan Station They also have Miso Soup and Gohan (rice).  I skipped this for more interesting options.

Takoyaki and Kaniyaki Station

takoyaki

Takoyaki and Kaniyaki
As a fan of Takoyaki, I'm quite pleased that they offered it.  What a fun idea!  We tried both Takoyaki and Kaniyaki.   It's my first time to try the Kaniyakiso it's a cool experience but my heart still belongs to the classic Takoyaki.

Dessert Station

banzai buffet

banzai buffet
For desserts, they have a lot of cakes and fresh fruits to offer.  Aside from this cakes, they have two chillers and six trays full of them.  I'm told that they have their own pastry chef.  I would appreciate it if they have labels on the cakes though.   It's quite bothersome to ask the staffs what each was.  They are not even familiar with everything too.
banzai buffet
My first dessert plate
My top picks are the Red Velvet, Matcha Mousse and White Matcha Opera Cake. I also picked a candy from their artificial cherry blossom tree display.  (The kind waitress tipped me =D)

banzai buffet
My second dessert plate: Dessert Maki, Creme Brulee, Strawberry Mousse and Fresh Fruits
The Dessert Maki which is sugar-coated with peach, cherry and pear filling is an innovative idea.  The Strawberry Mousse was way too sweet for my taste.  The Creme Brulee is one of the crowd favorites.  But, I prefer the Matcha Mousse more.  To compensate my guilty pleasures, I had a bowl of Fresh Fruits too.

apple green snow cone
Green Apple Snow Cone
I was giddy over their snow cone!  I haven't had one in quite some time.  It's so perfect for the summer.  They had lots of flavors: Strawberry, Bubble Gum, Orange, Blue Raspberry and Green Apple.  Seeing that the Green Apple Snow Cone was almost empty, I chose that. =))  I hope they add Matcha with Red Bean as toppings though.  It seems to fit their Japanese theme.

Beverage Station

banzai buffet
The Japanese wines are only for display. =p  But, they do have unlimited Local Beer!  The also have unlimited Red Iced Tea, Iced Tea, Blue Lemonaide and Milo

banzai buffetbanzai buffet
I had the Milo and Blue Lemonaide. I actually thought that the Milo was the Milo Freeze because it was in the Nescafe Freeze dispenser but it wasn't... Nevertheless, the Milo was delicious!  The Blue Lemonaide was loved by my companions but too sweet for me.

banzai buffet
They also had a Nescafe Alegria machine which serve: Caramel Machiatto, Cappucino,Mocha, lack Coffee andHot Milo.

I chose Iced Mocha but it came out hot so I guess only hot drinks are available.  Not a problem though because you can get some ice for it.

Tip: Like or follow their social media to get 15% off from April 1-18, 2014.  They also have a 5+1 promo for April 2014.  They also offer a Free for birthday celebrant promo.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Banzai The Great Teppanyaki Theater offers a one of a kind authentic Japanese  buffet experience.  The food quality and variety is top-notch!  Most stations are interactive and equipped with expert chefs.  The staffs are courteous and attentive. Almost all my favorite Japanese dishes are there except for chawan mushi and saba shioyaki.  Plus, the Trick Art Gallery and the Great Teppanyaki Show is sure to add some fun.  What I tried is only their ordinary buffet, i can't wait to check out what their Premium Buffet is like.

The perfect way to cap the last day of the week so to wine and dine.  So one Friday night, I convinced my friend Eric to try the Yamazaki Nights at Akira The Art of Sushi & Teppanyaki which is just walking distance from his work place.

akira art of sushi and teppanyaki
Akira The Art of Sushi & Teppanyaki has an al fresco area for those who don't want to enjoy the DJ beats and want to smoke.

But, we're more of an indoor type.  I love it's serene interiors and nature-influenced musical background.  You get to be in touch with nature even when you're comfortably inside and air-conditioned.

akira art of sushi and teppanyaki
They have a sushi bar with designer chairs.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Akira The Art of Sushi & Teppanyaki is a great place to chill in Makati for some drinks and authentic Japanese sushi and teppanyaki dishes.  Join in on their Yamazaki Nights on Friday and Satuday nights 10 pm and 2 am.  It's actually an extension of their normal hours with added music too.  Both of us have been working really hard for the entire week so we're so glad that we could relax over a candle lit dinner, cool beats and drinks.

During our Baguio Food Tour 2014 (#BFT2014), we stayed at Azalea Residence.  I'm glad with the group's selection because it acquainted me with this praiseworthy hotel.  They offer top-notch  service and facilities.  In fact, I found it difficult to get up once I lay on their bed because it's so soft and cozy!  There's cable TV in every room.  There's a stove, fridge and even microwave over.  The staffs are very friendly and courteous too.  And as a foodie, of course, I'm very thrilled to share about Tradisyon by Azalea's Breakfast Buffet.

Tradisyon by Azalea is located on the ground floor of Azalea residences.  It specializes in FilipinoComfort Food.

The dining area is so spacious that it offers its dinner utmost comfort and privacy.  It has soft yellow light that adds a tone of coziness to the place.

Upon walking in, the first thing you'll encounter is the Omelet Station.  You can request your style of omelet or egg here.  Due to the numerous buffet options, I opted for an egg instead to spare my tummy from being too stuffed.

Rasa Pura: Authentic Singaporean Dishes in Bagiuo City

I've always loved Singaporean cuisine but it's rarely available even in Manila.  It's a good thing that Rasa Pura has opened in Baguio Cityso that residents of the North Luzon Province can now experience authentic Singaporean dining.

rasa pura
Rasa Pura'skitchen is headed by a Singaporean master chef and makes use of imported spices from Singapore so you can be assured that of the authenticity in their dishes.

rasa pura
They offer a superb fine dining ambiance which is elegant and spacious.

rasa pura
They have the typical round tables with lazy Susan for lauriat style dining and also square tables for smaller groups.  The Baguio Food Tour 2014 (#BFT2014) dined lauriat style so we chose the big round table.  This was actually our last stop on our trip and it was the one that my companions loved the most.

Grilla Bar and Grill: Eat, Drink and Be Merry

My friends often tease me of being a serious and uptight person.  So once in awhile, I give in and let them take me to the fun places.  One night I ended up at Grilla Bar and Grill with good old friends and met a new ones too.  My friends enjoyed their drinks but as usual, I was there for food and company.
grilla bar and grill
I'm really liked the spacious and upscale feel of Grilla Bar and Grill Makati.  They even have an Al Fresco balcony area.

Food

Appetizers
chicharong cebu
Chicharong Cebu (160 php)
As they say, You Only Live Once (YOLO) so we started with the deliciously crispy Chicharong Cebu.

pork bbq and salted egg triangles
Pork BBQ and Salted Egg Triangles (185 php)
My friends were drinking so they really enjoy crunchy finger snacks like the Pork BBQ and Salted Egg Triangles while we chatted the night away.  This is an interesting dish to try.

Sisig
tofu and sigarilyas sisig
Tofu and Sigarilyas Sisig (145 php)
The Tofu and Sigarilyas Sisig is a healthiest sisig option in htier menu.  It's still as salty as the regular sisig though.

Veggies
ilocos dinuydoy
Ilocos Dinuydoy (135 php)
The Ilocos Dinuydoy has three primary ingredients: mashed squash, ampalaya and bagnet presented in a deconstructed way.

egg plant torta poqui poqui
Eggplant Torta - Poqui Poqui (145 php)
The Eggplant Torta - Poqui Poquiis the Ilocano way of eggplant torta.  I find their Ilocano dishes too salty.  Ilocano cuisine being our second native cuisine at home, I was surprised by this.  Ilocano dish is known for simplicity and bringing out the natural flavors.  Ilocanos like my mom are very frugal and appreciative of the lightest flavors.

Entree

Family Feast
grilla palayok
Grill-A-Palayok (695 php)
The Grill-A-Palayok is a fun dish to try with a group!  You can choose your favorite type of meat and you can choose from 3 types of dips: Pork-lemongrass broth, Grilled Eggplant and Nilasing na Mangga.  I liked the latter the most.

Beef
beef kansi
Beef Kansi (345 php)
I took one sip of the Beef Kansi and found it too peppery and salty to be enjoyed as a soup.

Chicken
sinampalukang inihaw na manok
Sinampalukang  Inihaw na Manok (225 php)
The Sinampalukang  Inihaw na Manok has a nice smokey flavor alogn with the strong tangy taste.  I liked the smokey and tender inihaw na manok bits in it.

inadobong tilapia sa gata at sili
Inadobong Tilapia sa Gata at Sili (225 php)
The Inadobong Tilapia sa Gata at Sili is among the dishes I liked as well.  It was fun to eat and has a fun twist of flavors.

halo halo spring roll
Halo Halo Spring Rolls (135 php)
Last but definitely not the least is the Halo Halo Spring Rolls.  I liked this the most!

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
My friends enjoyed our dining experience at Grilla Bar and Grill.  I recommend it for those who enjoy strong taste and pair their food with lots of rice and drinks to tone down the flavors and probably guilt.

Bullchef: A Big Boo for You

$

Bullchef has been featured several times in TV shows and popular publications.  It is also praised by my trusted foodie friends.  With that being said, we had high expectations and were very eager to try it.

bullchef kapitolyo
Bullchef is a typical house-turned-restaurant in Kapitolyo, Pasig.

bullchef kapitolyo

It had a few small square wooden tables with matching wooden chairs.  It also had a second floor which was off-limits during our visit.

Bullset Meals (Second Serving of Rice is FREE)
bullchef kapitolyo
BULLCHEF Special (249 php)
The BULLCHEF Special is the claasic bulalo with corn, string beans and lettuce.  We all failed to recognize what made this special.  But admittedly, I've heard people claim this as the best bulalo in Metro Manila.

asimbull
AsimBULL (275 php)
The AsimBULL is a thick sinigang soup with bulalo. This is just okay...

bullusok
BULLusok (175 php)
The BULLusok is a sizzling bulalalo covered in gravy and served with buttered corn, beans and carrots.  With just one bite into it's tough meat, I could already sense from its flavor that they made use of frozen local beef which I'm not a fan of.

tenderloin bullsteak
Tenderloin BULLsteak (210 php)
I expected the Tenderloin BULLsteak to be a better rendition but other than the difference was hardly distinguishable.

sizzling pork a bull
Sizzling Pork-a-BULL (125 php)
The Sizzling Pork-a-BULL is the same as the other sizzling with gravy dishes but this time it's pork.

bullchef
Free soup in all meals
Each meal comes with two cups of rice and a bowlful of bulalo soup broth which is the same as the BULLCHEF special.

Solo

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
I wouldn't recommend BULLCHEF to anyone.  Despite all its publicity, I'm saddened to say that this is the worst and most disappointing restaurant that we have tried in Kapitolyo.  The food quality is poor.  It's one of the rare moments were we didn't feel guilty leaving leftovers.  The price is unjustifiable.  I'd settle for food court options over this anytime.

MARINA Oyster Seafood Grill in Rockwell has recently launched a promo: Halo-Halo and Sorbetes All You Can for 149 php!

marina oysters seafood grill rockwell
It will soon be launched in other stores too.  But, the pilot store in Kalayaan Ave near Rockwell.

The promo is available everyday from 2 pm to 6 pm until July 24, 2014.  Of course, I took the bait!

They have huge jars filled with sweetened toppings such as: Langka, Gulaman, Banana (minatamis na saging), Sweet potato, Nata De Coco, Ube, Sago, Cream Corn, Beans, Whole Corn, Red Sago and Buko Strips.

They also have smooth and creamy leche flan.

 And, crispy pinipig.

For sobetero, they have ube, avodabo and cheese.  All of them have real chunks on them.

Here's my first halo-halo creation!

And, this is the second one!  I've always look for two things in a halo-halo: 1. It should have finely crushed ice 2. I love the toppings.  Since they have both, I'm very pleased with my 149 php!

My family will be back to try this soon!

The Breakfast Table: Where Sunshine and Breakfast Can Make Your Day

$
0
0
It was one of those days when you’re craving for a perfect breakfast meal to boost your day and yet you’re too lazy to wake up early in the morning to dust off the frying pan and cook up some ham and sunny-side up eggs. And so, there was no other option other than to hit the car and ride down the streets to a place where breakfast is served the way it’s supposed to be – as the most important meal of the day!

the breakfast table
Along the streets of the recently trending Maginhawa St.(Thanks to the facebook shares of the possible foodtastic adventures in the area) is a building that houses a small yet home-like restaurant that serves breakfast at its best all day long, The Breakfast Table.

Don’t be deceived by the concrete building seen on the outside, because once inside The Breakfast Table, the ambiance is transformed into a bright, refreshing space that makes you appreciate the beauty of
sunlight as it passes through the wide windows without letting in the summer’s scorging heat.

the breakfast table
While The Breakfast Table may offer your typical breakfast meals like omelettes, pancakes, and some Filipino favorites, which you can probably cook up in your own home if given the time and inspired with the much needed effort, it tries to give a different experience to its customers by adding a little twist to these traditional breakfasts.

Food

Rice Meals
sardine omurice
Sardine Omurice (165 php)

One of which is the Sardine Omurice (165 php), a Japanese omelette preparation which is normally just rice wrapped in scrambled eggs but in this case, the rice is mixed with bits of spicy Spanish sardines. Unfortunately, while other food items in the menu are even more tempting, being a strict follower of the no-meat Fridays during Lenten season left me with a limited variety to choose from, but after tasting it, I wasn’t disappointed.  The sardines was blended nicely with the omurice, giving just enough spiciness to color up the normally dull Japanese breakfast meal.  And for someone who’s not fond of spicy foods, it was actually pretty good, and definitely filling.

Ala Carte Eggs on Toasts
eggs tbt
Eggs TBT (195 php)
Another no-meat meal that I was able to chance upon is the Eggs TBT (195 php), the restaurant’s version of eggs benedict. For this version, the poached eggs are served with tinapa flakes and a drizzle of the restaurant’s special hollandaise sauce.  The outcome is a delicious egg dish that’s a mixture of sweet and salty.

Stuffed French Toast
sweet french toast
Sweet French Toast (150 php)
And because I believe breakfast is the perfect time to enjoy sweets, I went ahead and tried the ever-tempting Sweet French Toast (150 php).  While the thought of having peanut butter, chocolate, marshmallows and strawberry jam in one dish might normally scare sugar-conscious people away, it’s not as bad as it sounds when you get to taste it.  Although it is sweet (as it claims), it actually serves as a good dessert that goes pretty well with a perfect blend of coffee.

Drinks

Coffee from the Press
kalinga brew
Kalinga-brew (60 php)

Speaking of coffee, one of the reasons why The Breakfast Table is a good breakfast place is because of the variety of coffee that they serve.  Their coffee menu include coffee coming from Kalinga, Sagadaand Benguet.  And all of them comes in an individual coffee press, filling up more than one average-sized cup for a reasonable price! And being a coffee-lover, I was greatly pleased with my Kalinga-brew (60 php).

taho shake
Taho Shake (99 php)

And then there was the Taho Shake (99 php) that I’ve heard about even before I got to the place.  And true enough, the drink is one of the most refreshing drinks I’ve ever tried, embodying the coolness of an ice-blended drink while having the sweet soya taste of a regular taho.  Though it’s a little price-y compared to my perfect cup of coffee, it’s definitely worth a try.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Overall, The Breakfast Table is a great place to crash when you’re up for a good breakfast meal and too lazy to cook one up yourself.  The price and the ambience are reasonable, and there’s a lot of variety to try.

The waiters will assist in placing your orders on the grill but it's your job to make sure you turn them before they get burnt.

Samgyupsal (Roast Pork Belly) (250 php)
We occasionally order the Samgyupsal which is a roasted pork belly.  Why occasionally? Well, its sinfully delicious as you can see from the fatty marbled pork meat.

The Samgyupsal is cooked with the onions.

Eat it with your choice of dipping sauces and garlic.

7-11 Chef Creations: Affordable Filipino Meals by Chef Claude Tayag at 7-Eleven Luzon Stores

Chef Claude Tayag is the renowned chef behind Bale Datung (which means House of Wood), a by-reservation only restaurant that has been held as one of Asia's top restaurants in the Miele Guide 2010 and 2011.  He and his wife has also recently opened Downtown Cafe serving Filipino comfort food in a 1950's setting.  Chef Claude Tayag's cuisine has received glowing reviews from Anthony Bourdain himself, the famous American chef, author and host of the CNN travel and food show "No Reservations."

I am very excited to share that 7-11 has teamed up with Chef Claude Tayag for the new  7-11 Chef Creations7-11 Chef Creations are made of only natural ingredients without preservative and slow-cooked to fully unleash the disinct Filipino flavors.

7-Eleven chose to tie up with Chef Claudebecause he is one of the foremost advocate of Filipino cuisine to the world.

7-11 chef creations by chef claude tayag7-11 chef creations by chef claude tayag

According to Chef Claude, he chose to partner with 7-Eleven because they were willing to work with his philosophy of cooking nutritious and balanced meals without sacrificing taste.  Moreover, he also shared his wish to make healthy dishes accessible to more people.  I'm glad he pointed that out because that is one of my regular predicaments.

Life for me is an endless juggle of wants and needs.  We can't always have what we want whenever we want them so we have to weigh our options carefully in order to get the best out of every circumstance.  Ideally, I want to enjoy my mom's healthy, delicious, fresh and affordable home-cooked meals as much as I can.  But, I have to wake up and leave home for work and come home barely in time for dinner.  Pressed for time during lunch hours, I dine at nearby restaurants or food courts.   And when on a very tight budget, I grab anything I could munch on from the 7-11 Convenient Store located at the ground floor of our office building.

Now, I'm sure to be one of the many who will be trying the 7-11 Chef Creations when they  hit he 7-11 chillers this May 7, 2014.

The 7-11 Chef Creations comes in 3 variants: Pulled Pork with Adobo Dip, Pakbet with Bagnet and Pork Sinigang sa Kamias.

It's literally been years since I've revisited Greenhills Town Center and I was quite surprised that a lot of establishments has changed.  But, Grillery Restaurant & Bar has kept their place.

grillery restaurant and bar
Believe it or not, I'm a downright simple kind of girl.  Well, my guy friends often joke that I'm more of a boy cause I don't mind walking long distances, commuting even in a hot day and I actually prefer down-to-earth cozy bars than the mainstream, noisy and expensive ones.

So yeah, a bar with wooden tables and chairs, yellow soft lights and perhaps acoustic songs playing in the background while I chat with friends works for me.
