Delivery Guy: Food Delivery Done Right?

Do you have a struggle that you have a difficult time to shake?  I have.  I've always been so sickly.  Being stuck at home is a frequent thing for me.  On most days, I go out when I'm lazy and I prepare healthier meals when at home.  But when I'm sick, its hopeless for me to do anything so I resort to food delivery services like Delivery Guy.

Delivery Guy is available on the website and through mobile applications.  There were a lot of options and I chose Chinese food with Mongkok Dimsum and Noodles.

The interface is smooth and its fool-proof.

You can see the breakdown of the food you ordered together with the delivery charge.

If you want to avoid charges, keep in mind that they have three types of extra charges:
1. Below Minimum Charge - the minimum order cost should be at least 500 php or there is a delivery charge
2. Off Zone Charge - Delivery Guy is headquartered in Makati so having it delivered in Manila incurred 100 php charge.
3. Online Payment Charge

Once you're done with ordering, just wait for the confirmatory email.

As you can see, my total bill is 660 php.  My ordered food items is worth 500 php.  The delivery charge from Makati to Manila is 160 php (basic of 60 php and Off Zone Charge of 100 php).

As a person who is used to food deliveries, I have also tried Grab Food, Grab Delivery and Lalamove from the same area and so I can compare the charges.  Grab Food (120 php but you are confined to Grab Food partners), Grab Delivery (140 php but no insulation bag) and Lalamove (135 with free insulation bag but plus 100 php for pabili service).

While waiting for your order, you can view where the rider is.  The same feature is available for Grab and Lalamove.  But with Delivery Guy, you can also see the status of your food being prepared (and not just logistics)
After an hour and 20 minutes the driver arrives in yellow polo and perky bow tie.

The food is well-packaged and still warm.

As you can see, its the same as if I've ordered for dine in.

Spinach Dumpling anyone?

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Traffic is worsening.  Demand for food delivery is on the rise.  Although I feel that Metro Manila is never short of delivery service, Delivery Guy is a great option for food delivery especially for those near Makati.  For sure offices will benefit a lot from it.  Charges are hardly negligible if it is shared within a group.  So costing is not a problem, it just has to offer more options.

Cafe Vio La: Coffee and Cake in a Chill Colorful Cafe (Cross Winds Tagaytay)

Are you a planner or spontaneous when it comes to trips?  When I go on solo trips, I am quite am a planner.  But, the family is so spontaneous that when we got to Tagaytay, Cafe Vio La popped out in Swarm and we ended up checking it out.

After all, I haven't been back to Crosswinds for the past seven years.  It is the first time for the family to visit Crosswinds.

Seeing beautiful things like this makes me grateful to have a spontaneous family.  Had I planned going here, I wouldn't be as pleased by this wonderful surprise.

Each section has a different vibe somehow...

although the general theme is colorful and lively.

I especially like the al fresco area.  If only it wasn't hot outside, I would definitely want to hang out here.

Food

Even though we just had lunch, our eyes glittered as we saw a chiller filled with cakes.

Even until now, my family surprises me.  They say they are are full and then they order pizza.  I'm glad they did because the Cafe Vio La Special is a really good pizza.  It was so fragrant and the cheese would stretch when you pull out a slice.  I also thought I was full but turns out I wanted more of this as soon as I tried it.

Old Swiss Inn: All-Time Swiss Favorite (Makati Avenue)

It has been quite some time since I shared about Old Swiss Inn in Paco where I used to frequent when I didn't work so far from home.
Little did I know that it also has a branch in Makati.  I noticed they have new dishes being offered.

I can't pinpoint what it is exactly but the vibe is quite different.  I feel its brighter and more casual.

Coyote Cocina: Authentic Tex-Mex Flavors from Quality Local Ingredients (The Pop Up Katipunan)

I've noticed that many food places and bars have strategically positioned themselves near colleges and universities.  Perhaps if it was like that during my college days, I wouldn't be so anti-social.  Well, anyway there's a new Tex-Mex place called Coyotoe Cocina!

While many of the establishments are still closed, Coyotoe Cocina alone is worth the visit.

I really like the spacious and modern design as well as the spacious dining and parking area of The Pop Up Katipunan.   But, I can't imagine how hot this place is during the day time so I would suggest that you go at night.

I think its really the ideal home for a Coyote Cocina.

The ambience is minimalist.  Aside from a few wall arts and artifacts to hint of its tex-mex influence, there isn't much to see.

It has a counter wherein you can see its open kitchen...

and a few tables.  It offers two kinds of tables: (1) ordinary square wooden table (2) a long table with built in beer coolers.

Food
This is the first time I've encountered a concept that uses quality local ingredients to make authentic Tex-Mex flavor.  I really like the idea because it still delivers satisfaction to the customers while boosting our local economy and it is sustainable for the establishment.

I recall my former favorite Tex-Mex place: Orale! - a small hole-in-the-wall serving authentic Tex-Mex dishes which closed down.  Perhaps, it was because of the high price of its imported ingredients that made it impossible for it to survive.

Washoku Musashi-tei: Authentic Japanese Receipe since 1967 (The Forum South Global BGC)

I can't recall the last time I've been excited to try a newly opened Japanese restaurant.  So I was quite intrigued when the family discovered one originating from Japan called "Washoku Musashi-Tei".

It may not look big from the outside but you'd be surprised once you go inside.

The place is usually crowded with foreign and Japanese guests.  They also have function rooms for group privacy.

This is set on the table while we were waiting for our orders.

It also serves complimentary brown rice tea.

Las Casas Manila by Margarita Fores: Bataan's Heritage Town Has Come to Quezon City

The Philippines has a long history and culture to showcase.  Did you know that there are many ways to discover its stories?  Las Casas tells the tale of Filipino history and culture through its heritage homes.

I was fortunate to have visited the first Las Casas in Bataan.  It was were my cousin held her premuptials.  I was truly amazed!

I've been wanting to share the experience with my family for so long.  But, my mom doesn't want to leave home for so long because of our six dogs.

Then, a miracle happened as Las Casas decided to open here in Manila, specifically Quezon City!

While it did not occupy a vast land, it surely did not have less flair in terms of interior to the Las Casas in Bataan.
My favorite part is the spiral staircase overlooking the dining area and the outdoor pool.
It leads to more rooms on the second floor.

The best room is the one in the first floor.  If you've been to Bataan, you'll see a resemblance.

From this, you can see how high the ceiling is.

Table set up is way better than in Bataan.  I guess that's what the touch of Chef Margarita Fores can do.
Wherever you dine, you are free to roam around the place.

There are lots to see...

especially if you appreciate antiques.

Food
The highlight, of course, is the dining experience with Chef Margarita Fores at its helm.

Las Casas Manila by Margarita Fores is definitely a must try.  You already have two reasons to go: (1) ambiance (2) food.  More comes with the unique experience.  It is similar but different to Las Casas de Azucar in Bataan.  Another factor is the convenience that it is at the heart of Manila.

When life feels a bit dry, I go in search for things to try.  So I thought of traveling all the way South to try Sartin's heirloom recipes of the North.

It's been a long time since I last stayed at Summit Ridge Hotel

I thought it's an awesome idea to have Sartin serving Quezon, Tarlac and BacolodHeritage Dishes in Tagaytay.

Hui Lau Shan 许留山: Hongkong's Famous Mango Dessert is Now in Manila (SM Megamall)

If you've been to Hongkong, I'm certain you've encountered Hui Lau Shan 许留山!  It's so famous that you'll find in almost everywhere especially the busy districts.

I was lucky to be invited for a sneak peek prior to its opening.  I'm sharing here what I had then.  I'm aiming to go back soon to try more!!!

Mango Romance (170 php)

The Mango Romance is Hui Lau Shan's world-famous set because as you can see, it seems like an ideal sampler to order.   You get three desserts in one plate: (1) Mango Chewy Ball (2) Mango Crystal Jelly (3) Mango Mochi.  All of them are equally good!  I noticed the pricing here is cheaper than in Hongkong perhaps because their mangoes are sourced here in the Philippines.  Lucky us!!!

The first time I've tried a Mango Pancake was in HK 88 Dessert in 999 Shopping Mall Food Court back in 2012.  Unfortunately, it closed down and I haven't had one since.  While I loved the Mango Pancake upon first try, I never thought that it could be as good as how Hui Lau Shan made it out to be.   The pancake had such a light and velvety texture that was well-complimented by the light and fluffy cream-filling and refreshingly sweet and tangy mango.

My companions had these... I will try these out soon!

Hui Lau Shan 许留山 also offers desserts as take away!  I will buy some of these on my next visit for the family!

Welcome to the Philippines Hui Lau Shan 许留山!  I hope you can be consistent with the sweetness and pricing cause I will surely keep coming back for more!

Saverde Coffee Shop: Bataan's Leading Homegrown Coffee Shop (Abucay Bataan)

While the international chain of Starbucks is dominating most towns in the Philippines, I'm happy to find out that Bataan begs to differ.  Both tourists and locals visit Saverde Coffee Shop.

Saverde is not located on a famous mall or at a main stream corner lot.  In fact, it is found in a conspicuous alley.

Yet, it is full even on a typical weekday.

It may not look much from the outside, but you'll find it cozy once you step in.

Saverde has a lot of options from food to drinks.  I noticed most customers already know what to order so they could probably tell that we were tourists as we took a lot of time in deciding what to order.  What shocked us was the unbelievably cheap pricing!

If you're a fan of nighttime al fresco, don't you agree this is a decent spot?  It's not as popular as the air-conditioned areas though.

Saverde also has this pink hue function room.

Ima's Pamangan: Masarap Na Mura Pa! (Pilar Bataan)

It is part of Filipino culture to make a stop from churches and religious shrines.  Located on the way to the National Shrine of Mount Samat is Ima's Pamangan

Ima's Pamangan is a huge eatery that offers an unbelieavably affordable buffet for 200 php and ala carte budget meals ranging from 70 php to 400 php.

The dishes it serves are popular Filipino home dishes.

It offers a refreshing wooden cabin ambiance.

Buffet (200 php)
We opted for the buffet because it is a steal deal!  Look at all the dish options for only 200 php!

These are replenished quite often.

Among the dishes I enjoyed the most are:Crispy Talangka, Langka, Green Mango Salad, and Sweetened Cassava.

Big groups are very welcome here as it has really long tables.

You can see different kinds of people dining here from families to friends, bikers and both locals and tourists alike.  Did I mention, it also offers free WiFi?

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Before or after heading of to the National Shrine of Mount Samat, make a meal stopover for Ima's Pamangan.  You won't regret it!  It also has a pasalubong store which I found to be convenient.

Batad View Inn and Restaurant: Terrace View Dining Experience (Batad, Banaue, Ifugao)

Being a foodie is a cultural appreciation.  But, my cultural appreciation is not limited to food.  I'd like to believe my family is the same which is why I am very grateful that we all got to Batad in the Ifugao Region.  We stayed at Batad View Inn and Restaurant which we found on the interested where we had numerous meals which I can now share with you.

The reviews we read about this place were mostly made by foreigners.  During our entire stay, we were also in the company of foreigners.  Isn't it ironic that they got to visit this place before most Filipinos?

The view and Ifugao vibe is priceless.

I enjoyed dining here when I was restless from trekking and even so after a comfortable rest.  To breathe and feel the fresh cool air has become a rarity for me.

Although there has been some influene of mcivilization , I still find that they have their own identity.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
It takes more than 10 hours and hundreds of trekking steps to reach Batad View Inn and Restaurant  from Manila.  Yet, for its breath-taking rice terrace view, fresh dewy cool air and addictive home-made pork chop, I would definitely want to go back here.  I found the expensive pricing of the dishes to be well-substantie by the labor it requires for them to to carry the ingredients through  a long trek.   Let's support our ethnic "katutubo" (tribes) guys.  Please visit this place!

Tip: To find this place, contact them prior so they will meet you in Banaue and trek with you.  (Cellphone signal is not so good so expect delays in communication)

Double Tasty Taiwan Hotpot 台灣蒸火鍋: The Best Sate Hotpot in Town! (Blue Bay Walk Pasay City)

We have a lot of Hot Pots all over Manila but Double Tasty Taiwan Hotpot 台灣蒸火鍋 is the first to distinguish itself as Taiwanese.

Actually, we've have a lot of Taiwanese in the Philippines.  One of my childhood neighbor is Taiwanese and the grade school and high school I attended was run by Taiwanese nuns and priests.   But, it is only recently that we see Taiwanese Cuisine in Manila demarcating itself from Chinese Cuisine

Truth be told, the difference is not that big since Taiwanese Cuisine is mainly influenced by Chinese Cuisine, most notably from the south of Fujian (Hokkien/Fukien) where most Filipino-Chinese or Tsinoys like me descend our ancestry from.

Let's track back the Taiwanese Cuisines we've shared here in the past:
Now let's continue with the addition of this Taiwanese Hot Pot entry with Double Tasty.  The casual appeal is similar to usual the typical Chinese restaraunts in Manila China Town (Binondo).

Tori Chizu: Japanese Comfort Food Craze (SM Megamall Building A)

Have you heard of the Tori Chizu?  I've been hearing about it quite a lot.  My little sister even recommended it to me.

Because of the Japanese sounding name, I just had to check the origin of this concept.   Turns out, it is an original concept by the same company that franchised Bonchon here in the Philippines

It has such a inviting vibe.  The menu is with inviting pictures and unbelievably affordable pricing will make it irresistible for you to not try this.

(1) Golden Fried Bangus/Milk Fish- just fry on both sides until golden brown and garnish with fresh green onions and sesame seeds.

(2) Teriyaki Sauce - involves a 3-step process:

(a) Combine in a saucepan over medium heat for 1 minute:
     (i)   1 cup water
     (ii)  1/4 cup soy sauce

(iii) 5 teaspoons of brown sugar or honey
(iv) 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger
     (v)  1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder in a saucepan over medium heat

(b) Dissolve 2 tablespoons of cornstarch in 1/4 cup of cold water

(c) Mix (a) and (b) together in a sauce pan and heat for 5 to 7 minutes.

Serve while hot and crispy!  Enjoy!

You can choose between Sarangani Bay's Boneless Milkfish that is Marinated or Unseasoned depending on your preferrence.

Platina Modern Japanese Food Village: Home of 16 Authentic Food Stores from Japan (Brgy. Poblacion, Makati City)

Japanese food is one of the most-loved cuisine in the Philippines.   While I would love to eat authentic Japanese food everyday, the high cost of Japanese food prevents me in doing so.  So when I heard about Platina Modern Japanese Food Village with 16 authentic food franchises from Japan.  The price range is from 150 php to 500 php.

The ambiance differs per area.  Platina labelled this bar area on the first level as the Roppongi Street.

Salmon Aburri Maki with Aligue Mayo (315 php)
Probably the first one to impress me was this Salmon Aburri Maki with Aligue Mayo.  I just love how flavorful it is and the salmon almost melts unto your mouth.

Pork (30 php/stick)
This Pork Kushi looks a bit drenched in oil. Let it sit for awhile so some oil is drained.  I like the tenderness though.

Meat DX (360 php)
Surely, one of the best Osaka-style Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) I've had in Manila is Tappan Yaki Kushi No Nobo'sMeat DX - with beef, pork and chicken meats. As expected from a brand that has multiple stores in Okinawa.

Pizzeria di Baldi

Margherita (290 php)

I'm a big fan of Neopoli Pizza or Brick Oven Pizza.  These are pizzas which are baked at a high temperature for a short time so the flavor is sealed in.  We don't have enough of these in the Metro.  Thus, I really welcome Pizzeria di Baldiauthentic and quality Neopoli Pizza.

There are a lot more to try.  Some were not yet open or available during my visit.  But, I found the concept of Platina Modern Japanese Food Village quite interesting.  It really fits the food and drink scene of Poblacion.
