Heat of Edsa Shangri-La Hotel: Superb International Cuisine Breakfast Buffet

The grand finale for our weekend staycation at Edsa Shangri-La is our breakfast buffet at the Heat.  It's been a while since I had a breakfast buffet so I had no expectations.

heat breakfast buffet
After our 6 am morning swim, we packed our bags and headed down to the Heat.   By the entrance they had a board with Breakfast Hourly Forecast for both Saturday and Sunday.
  • 6 - 7 am: Light
  • 7 - 8 am: Busy
  • 8 - 11 am: Very Busy
Since we arrived around 8 am, there was already a line but it moved quickly and we got ushered to our seats in around 15 minutes.  Since I have never dined at the Heat before, even for lunch or dinner, I was pleasantly surprised at how extensive the buffet spread was.

Bread Station
heat breakfast buffet
They have all the breakfast itemsyou can think of.  They have Plain Oatmeal, Gluten Free Bread, Bread and Butter Pudding...

Mini Pancakes, Waffles, French Toast

And an extensive selection of pastries

which includes Croissants, Danish Pastries, Muffins, Rollsand Canapes.

Cereal Station

They have all kinds of cereal selections: Corn Flakes, Cheerios, KoKo Crunch, Raisin Bran,Fiber One and my favorite Rice Krispies.

Yogurt Station
heat breakfast buffet
I'm a huge fan of yogurt and that is the reason why I enjoyed Sofitel's Yogurt Station. But unlike where the yogurt variants are flavored, here they have unsweetened yogurt where you can add toppings to bring in more flavors and this makes them healthier.  They have Plain Muesli, Plain Yogurt and Flavored Muesli.

Honey and Preserved Fruits Selection
They have different kinds of honey and preserved fruit selections. And since I wanted to try them, I decided to addsomeas toppings for my Plain Yogurt.

My Plain Yogurt with Figs and Orange
Since fresh fruits didn't appeal to me, I added preserved figs and orange to my yogurt instead.

Cold Cuts Station

In addition to the usual breakfast staples, they have a lot more!  They have Cold Cutswith my favoriteSmoked Salmon, Salami, Bologna, Ham and condiments.

Omelette Stations

There are many like me who are fond of having Omelette for breakfast so I was quite glad that they have two stations for it.  I ordered my Smoked Salmon and Capers Omelettefrom the chef right here.

Salad Station

I always try to have as much greens as I can.

So here's to my early plate of colorful and detoxifying Salad with Thousand Island Dressing.

Sushi Station

They have an assortments of Sushi and Makis available.  I'm told that only the Sashimi are not available for breakfast.

By this point, I was already stuffed so shobe and I shared a plateful of Maki.

Mini Taho Station
I was so thrilled to see that they have a Mini Taho Stationbecause it's been a long time since I had one.  (I always wake up late...)  When I showed this to shobe when we went back to our room, she was so regretful she missed this.

Fruit Station

Beverage Station

beverage station
Aside from specialty teas found in each station like the Tarik Tea in the Indian Station and the Salabat from the Filipino Station, they also have a beverage bar for Fruit Juice.

beverage station
The Fruit Juice is not fresh.  TheHot Chocolatetastes like Milo and not Tablea which I'd hope.  Best choice for us was the Brewed Coffee.

nespresso
There's also Hot Tea Selections and Nespresso which you could bring out because they have cups with covers.  Shobe was so excited to bring a cup to our room.  She is a coffee addict!

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict

Overall, this is one of the best breakfast buffets I've had.  Heat's superb international cuisine breakfast buffet spread is tough to beat.  We really felt that the room rate is worth it because of their breakfast buffet.

P.S. Thank you so much Shobe for treating me to for this food feast and staycation to de-stress.  I hope someday I can be as disciplined and productive as you! ;)  But, for now I'm just the biggest eater. =))

I've tried so many Thai food establishments from food markets and hole-in-the-walls to upscale hotel restaurants but I thinkBKK Express is my first time food court style experience.

bkk express
BKK Express is the one of the many food options atUptown Mall Food Hall.  It is a sister company of Soi Thai Restaurant.

Appetizers

Thai Spring Rolls (120 php)
For starters, order for sharing some Thai Spring RollsThe price is very reasonableAnd, you'll surely enjoy munching on these crunchy finger food.

Specials
pork belly in 5 spices with hard boiled egg
Pork Belly in 5-Spice with Hard Boiled Egg (260 php)
The Pork Belly in 5-Spice with Hard Boiled Egg taste like Beef Brisket but sweeter.  You can to eat it with the vinegar-based sauce to contrast the sweetness.

Rice Toppings (served with home-brewed Pandan Iced Tea)
bagoong rice
Bagoong Rice Toppings (190 php)
The Bagoong Rice Toppings is a colorful bowlful.  If you're not a hefty rice eater, I think this is a good staple for two.  There isn't much viand to have this on its own.

salted fish fried rice
Salted Fish Fried Rice (170 php)
I usually go for the Bagoong Rice Toppings but theSalted Fish Fried Rice equally good.

Pad Thai
pad thai crabmeat
Pad Thai Crabmeat (250 php)
The Pad Thai Crabmeat has lots of beansprout making it crunchy with some sweetness from the crab meat.  One order is already good for two.

If you can't have crab meat, you can opt for the Pad Thai Chicken.

This is my first time to try a Pad Thai Singaporean.  It was a good try but I still prefer the usual Pad Thai.

Thai Grill Plates

The Chicken Satay is one of my favorites among our orders.  It is tender, moist and tasty.  An order comes with 10 pieces so it's quite affordable.

grilled thai isan sausage
Grilled Thai Isan Sausage (350 php)
Another first for me is trying out the Grilled Thai Isan Sausage.  It's like our locallongganisa but not as sweet.

grilled thai isan sausage
Grilled Thai Isan Sausage (350 php)

You enjoy the Grilled Thai Isan Sausage like thesamgyupsal

thai sweet pork bbq
Thai Sweet Pork BBQ (330 php) (*not actual serving)
My personal recommendation is the Thai Sweet Pork BBQ.   It also comes with 10 pieces per order.  It has a alluring sweetness and juiciness that will keep you wanting more.

Desserts
sticky rice mango sundae
Sticky Rice Mango Sundae (135 php)
The Sticky Rice Mango Sundae is the usual sticky rice mango with a scoop of coconut sorbet.  The coconut sorbet is very light.  The rice and mango is in two layers so its good for sharing.  Don't expect the green colored rice to be flavored though, I'd just for visual appeal.

Drinks
thai iced coffee
Thai Iced Coffee (55 php)
I loved the Thai Iced Coffee.  It's a steal for only 55 php!  This will definitely be my caffeine fix when in the area.

pandan iced tea
Pandan Iced Tea (45 php)
If you go with the Rice Toppings, you can get the Pandan Iced Tea for free.  But, in case you don't.  I think you'll like how refreshingly sweet it is.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
BKK Express serves its purpose to provide quick, convenient and affordable Thai cuisine.  I can't say it's the best but most of its meal are good for sharing at an affordable price.  I recommend this for those in the area (Go for the Thai Sweet Pork BBQ).   The ingredients are okay except for the shrimp (they use dried ones).

Asakusa: Home of Tempura at The Grove by Rockwell Ugong Pasig City

My family loves tempura too so one night we were craving for one and we recalled that Booky (Aileen) recommendsAsakusa: Home of Tempura so we drove all the way there.   This is the second purely tempura joint that I've tried.

asakusa home of tempura
It's actually funny because we've been to The Grove By Rockwell several times but we had no idea it had more establishments inside.  We had to ask the guard where it was.  We're told it was located beside a hotel called Aruga by the Grove.  And, indeed it was.

asakusa home of tempura
For such a hidden place, it had noticeably a lot more diners than it's neighboring establishments.

Appetizers
spicy salmon salad
Spicy Salmon Salad (218 php)
Before we go on with the Tempura, let me highly recommend that you order theSalmon Salad.  You can have it Regular or Spicy.  If you can stand a bit of spiciness go for the Spicy!  It's the bomb!  We loved it so much!

Tempura Sets (Comes with Free Iced Tea or Lemonade)
All their tempura has a nice crunchy texture and it wasn't oily.   As you can see from the photos, the quality is consistent.  Compared to Tenya which is an a franchise from Asakusa Tokyo, I found the tempura butter to be crunchier and heavier and the color is slightly darker.  Thus, it offers a different but just as pleasurable experience.

They have 2 kinds of sauces: the traditional and Asakusa Sauce.  I still like the traditional because the Asakusa Saucewith a thick consistency has an overpowering sweetness.

samurai set
Samurai Set (358 php)
One of my shobes ordered the Samurai Set which had black tiger prawn, fish, squid, eggplant, squash and french beans tempura.  Shobe upgraded her plain rice to Fried Rice (38 php).

asakusa home of tempura
Shogun Set 3 pcs. (358 php)
The Shogun Set is the classic with three black tiger prawn.  I bet this is often ordered.  Shobe upgraded her plain rice to Udon (60 php).

asakusa home of tempura
Emperor Set (598 php)
My big brother ordered the most expensive item on the menu which is the Emperor Set.  It had 2 Black Tiger Prawns, Scallop, Shiitake Mushroom, Kani, Fish, Zucchini and French Beans.  He also upgraded his plain rice toFried Rice (38 php).  I found the price of this to be unjustified especially since for the price (with upgrades), you could already go for an eat all you can and have more tempura right?

Make Your Own Tempura Set
asakusa home of tempura
Black Tiger Prawn (110 php) and Squid (60 php)
I wasn't feeling well that Sunday... so this is a very rare occasion where I didn't have an appetite.  I tried the Make Your Own Tempura Set by ordered  a piece of the Black Tiger Prawn and Squid.  I loved them both.  But surprisingly, I wanted more of the Squid because it is so soft

Other Dishes
tempura udon
Tempura Udon (298 php)
My mom ordered the Tempura Udon.  The black tiger prawnis still partially crunchyThe sweet broth compliments the tempura as well as their 2 kinds of tempura sauces.  It also comes with some tempura flakeswhich adds a twist of texture to the al dente udon.

 Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
For a local concept, I'm impressed with the food quality of Asakusa: Home of Tempura.  However, I do find their pricing to be a bit steep.

Mighty Quinn's: Award-Winning New York Style Slow Smoked BBQ Opens in Manila

The award-winning New York Style Slow Smoked BBQ joint Might Quinn's opens in SM MegamallFashion Hall. And, I was fortunate to be one who got to try it prior to its official opening.

Pitmaster Hugh Mangum proudly presents to us Mighty Quinn's22-Hour Slow Smoked Brisket.  Just look at that beautiful pinkish smoke ring.   And great news for organic fans, they only serve hormone-free and pasture-raised cattle.

He also shared a very moving success story.  It made me believe more that if we give everything our best and with passion we can succeed.

mighty quinns manila
The dining set up is very casual with industrial chairs and wooden tables.  On top of each table is a bucket for utensils and their barbecue sauce.

mighty quinns megamall
Mighty Quinn's adopts a self-service system where you have to order at the counter.  And, there's a water station on the right side.

I think it's a very effective marketing strategy because the first thing you'll see are the Meats.  They will be basting and slicing them before you so will get really tempted to want to order everything!

Once you make the tough decision, they will place your choice of Meats on the tray and weight them.

Next, you get to Pickled Add-Ons and Sides.

Then, you can pick your Drinks and Dessert which they can serve later on.  And, then you will be charged for you're meal.  It's a good idea to notice the pricing on the menu and not to get too excited on ordering so much because your bill can be surprisingly expensive.

As you can see, I ordered a lot.  Yes, I confess to gluttony!  And, I couldn't finish my order.  But, I must say the Brisket andSpare Ribs are worth it!  The Brisket is so tender and juicy with the right amount of fat.  Prior to serving the Spare Ribs, Hugh Mangum implored upon us not to use knife and fork to eat it.  He said, that the Spare Ribs are not meant to be fall of the bone and instead offers a unique crunch to every bite.  Indeed, the Spare Ribs is a whole new experience for me.  It is totally different from the Baby Back Ribs which I'm used to.

I also loved the Buttermilk Broccoli Salad and Burnt End Beans.  All their Meats have the same barbecue sauce which is a bit sour rather than sweet so it's best to order Sides that are not sour.  Had I known this, I would have ordered the Cream-Based Slaw instead.

mighty quinns philippines
Brisket Single Serving (495 php), Burnt Ends Single Serving (495 php), Pulled Pork Single Serving (495 php), Spare Ribs Single Serving (495 php), Half Chicken (485 php), Sweet Potato Casserole Small (165 php), Burnt End Baked Beans Small (165 php) and Dirty Rice Small (free with every meat order)
My friend Berylle (of itsberyllicious.com) order this humongous meal and finished it!  But, before she did, she allowed me to sample the ones I did not order.  The Burnt Ends is in a form of a cube.   The texture of the meat is leaner and tougher than the Brisket and akin to chunky corned beef.  ThePulled Pork is strands of pork - also with the same barbecue sauce.  And, the Half Chicken is also glazed with the same barbecue sauce.  We both liked the Sweet Potato Casserole which was evidently spiced with cinnamon.

sweet corn fritters
Sweet Corn Fritters Medium (325 php)
The Sweet Corn Fritters is only great if you have more belly space.  I'd personally spend and load up more on the meat.

Bread Pudding (195 php)
Save space for their Bread PuddingI suggest having this for sharing especially after all the heavy Meats you've consumed.  It will give your taste buds a pleasurable sweet break a hefty savory (sour and spiced) meal.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Mighty Quinn's certainly offers a unique slow smoked American barbecue experience.  A single serving of Meat with the free sandwich or Dirty Rice will already satisfy you.  And, if you're a hefty eater, adding some Sides will certainly bring a more pleasurable experience.  I don't suggest ordering more than one Meat since they are all rubbed with the same barbecue sauce.

SM City Manila: #ManilennialEats Food Crawl

SM City Manila is just a few minutes away from home.  During my OJT, it is also my second home which is why I've reviewed most dining establishments thereI thought I've covered it all but when I received an invite to the Manilennial Eats Food Crawl, I've discovered that there's are new food places to explore.  Let me share with you the 10 food destinations we visited.

First Stop: Buffalo Wings n'Things
Garlic Parmesan Champion Buffalo Wings Triple (154 php)
If you're looking for an addictive treat without spiciness, the Garlic Parmesan Champion Buffalo Wings is a great choice.

Garlic Parmesan No Bones Fun Single Triple (409 php)
I personally like it with the bones, but you can opt for the No Bones Fun if you want.

Second Stop:8 Street Bites
This is my second time at 8 Street Bites. Since my first visit, I wanted to try more of its menu items.
Freeway Nachos (98 php)
No words are required to tell you how irresistible it is to dig in into theFreeway Nachos.  The price is very reasonable so there's no reason not to order.

Country Fried Chicken Steak with Milk Gravy (148 php)
The Country Fried Chicken Steak with Milk Gravy is a must try!

Third Stop:Choobi Choobi
Salt and Pepper Shrimp
Among all the dishes we've tried, the Salt and Pepper Shrimpis my fave.  Now that we're into Choobi Choobi, let me tell you that ever since it has opened in SM Manila, it has been our family's favorite.  (So sorry I was just so lazy to blog about it because I  tend to want to eat with my hands and not bring out my camera)

Fourth Stop:Hot Star Large Fried Chicken
Crispy Large Fish and Crispy Large Chicken
It's been a long time since I first visited Hot Star Large Chicken at their pioneer branch.  I'm happy to update that they now have Dimsum Bowls, Chicken CutsMeals and newAla Carte items.

Fifth Stop:Tokyo Joe
California Maki 10 pieces (145 php)
If you're an instagram follower, you'd see that the family has already tried Tokyo Joe before. (Yes, pardon my lazyness I forgot to blog it again... which is why you should also follow on IG right? =D)

Joe's Chicken Bowl Regular (129 php)
Katsu Bowl (159 php)
Gyudon Bowl Regular (149 php)

I've tried all these items before, but now I noticed that the flavor is stronger.  My preference is towards subtle taste but maybe they adjusted it somehow to Filipino taste buds.

Sixth Stop:Mad for Pizza

Danggit Pasta Solo Share (228 php)

Creamy Salmon Alfredo (248 php)
Chicken Havana (158 php)
Make Your Own Pizza (288 php)
Mango Supreme (68 php)

I've tried Mad For Pizzaback when it was in Il Terrazo so I was expecting more or less of the same menu.  But, turns out they revamped everything except for the Make Your Own Pizza Concept.  I loved the old concept but pricing now fits a student budgetand the serving size is satisfying.

Seventh Stop:  Ramen Cool
RCool Ramen (260 php)
Two years ago, I blogged about the RCool Ramen having overcooked egg.  Well, look at it now, perfectly runny!  And, the broth is more flavorful.  I'm very happy with the improvement.

Eigth Stop:Wicked Waffle
Berry Banana Split (170 php)

I was never a waffle fan but Wicked Waffle's Berry Banana Split is so good I couldn't stop myself from finishing it.  Hands down this is the best waffle dessert I've tried.

Ninth Stop:Red Table
Korean Barbecue
I've previously shared how I loved and frequentedRed Table.  Well, their new item made me love it even more!

Tenth Stop:  Big Daddy's
Seafood Penne (155 php)
I've tried Big Daddy's several times.  (Yes, again lazy to blog about it).  But, I always order their meat selections.  I've just discovered that their Seafood Penne is just as good and as affordable.  It has a slight sweet blend like our pinoy style spaghetti.

So that concludes our #ManilennialEats Food Crawl.  Join in by posting some of your tooCheck out SM City Manila's social media accounts for more offerings of the#ManilennialEats.

Every year we try to cook up a surprise birthday dinner for the greatest foodie in the family: our mom.  Choosing some place undiscovered used to be easy.  Now with my advent of Instagram and Facebook, it is usually our mom being the first to know every new restaurant joint that pops up.  So, we decided to go with the classic at Impressions.

Located at the 3rd floor of Maxims Hotel, Impressions is afine diningFrench restaurant spear-headed by celebrity chef Cyrille Soenen.

The family has already tried celebrity chef Cyrille Soenen atBrasserie Cicou beforeBut, we're more epicurious to try this one after seeing its collection of awards.

We made reservations only to find out the the place is barely empty.  The function room is occupied by Senator Enrile so the staffs were very preoccupied there when we came in.

After a few minutes of waiting, we were ushered to our seats passing by a bar...

Although empty, each table already has a table set up.

Hearing bulalo sounds native right?   But, the Impressions Bulalo is nothing familiar to us.  It is a completely different French interpretation.  The Impressions Bulalo is a US beef short rib in creamytruffle beef broth with vegetables.  I liked it.  The truffle is not too strong bringing a wonderful balance with the beefy taste.

Chef Robert Restaurant: Homey Place Serving Hearty Meals (Banawe Quezon City)

Last week, it has been a pleasure for me to be acquainted with Chef Robert.

    chef robert
It is located in Banawe, one of the food haven in the North which has always beckoned my foodie enthusiasm.  But, the distance has been keeping me away from it.

Perhaps it was a fortunate twist of fate that my friend works in the area so he was able to bring me toChef RobertAs a regular, he shared that  Chef Robert is famous for its Happy Hour from 2 to 5 pm where meal are offered at reduced price.

    chef robert
I instantly found Chef Robert as cozy and warm like my very own home.  The simple harmony of the yellowish hues, Christmas decors, wooden fixtures creates awonderfuland comforting atmosphere to slow down and chill.  That is exactly what I needed for my holiday break.

    chef robert
I initially thought that they have a limited dining area.  But, funny as it is, we discovered that it has a second floor from poster posted in the rest room! Aside from being an extended dining area, this also serves as meeting or function room equipped with a projector

    Food
Chef Robert (the real person) wasn't around during my visit.  But seeing the place and their creative offerings, I am certain that he is a genius chef with great passion.  I instantly felt that I came to the right place.

Their extensive menu made it difficult for me to decide on what to order.  Good thing our server  Gerald was very helpful and they had heart marks on their menu indicating their best-sellers.

    Soup
    chef robert
Cream of Mushroom Soup (75 php) and Cream of Pumpkin Soup (75 php)
Of course, there is no better starter to warm up our bellies than their SoupsBoth the Cream of Mushroom Soup and Cream of Pumpkin Soup are delicious!  Since I love mushrooms, I enjoyed the Cream of Mushroom Soup more.  While my friend favored the Cream of Pumpkin Soup for being pleasantly flavorful and very nutritious.

Thai Green Chicken Curry Regular (205 php)
We both enjoyed and recommend the Thai Green Chicken Curry.  The chicken strips were tender and the curry sauce is so creamy with the right blend of spices.  He shares that this is his regular order.

Korean Beef Stew Regular (225 php)
If you're craving for something with sweet notes, you can opt for the Korean Beef Stew.  The blend is perfect when paired with a staple.  Did I mention that all their ala carte menu already comes with a free cup of rice?  However, I found the meat to be a bit tough on some parts.

    tofu sisig on eggplant torta
Tofu Sisig on Eggplant Torta (265 php)
I was right to trust our server Gerald with the Tofu Sisig on Eggplant Torta.  He said this is their newest hit.  Indeed, this is a remarkable guilt-free comfort food that has won over our palettes.  I don't even likesisig but I'm swooned over this.

Chef Robert also serves cakes as a nice meal ender.

    chocnut mousse
    Chocnut Mousse (140 php)
You can also enjoy their cakes and coffee for a beautiful afternoon chit chat like we did.  For the price, I'd certainly prefer it here than a posh hotel lounge especially since Chef Robert also has free WiFi.

Those who would like to indulge in sweet and rich chocnut, can try their Chocnut Mousse.

    carrot cake
    Carrot Cake (140 php)
But my low sweet tolerance had me englamoured by their Carrot Cake.  I've tried tons of carrot cakes before since it is my mom's favorite cake.  But, this is my first time to try a carrot cake lavished with fresh crisp carrot shreds exploding with its natural sweet juices as you chew on the soft and moist cake.

    Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
I've been blogging for quite some time now.  And recently, I've found my self  following the pursuit of my foodie idols in trying out new restaurants.  But, trying out Chef Robert Restaurant reminded me of what got me into food blogging in the first place.  I yearn to try culinary masterpieces - one where you can recognize and taste the science, art and sincere passion that a chef puts in it.  I'm glad that I have found such at Chef Robert

It has become quite obvious for me that it has been a long time since my first time to visit Banawe and tried Kao Chi because I had no idea that it is now replaced by Tra Vinh Australia.

I almost didn't recognize the place because of the total make over.

Tra Vinh feels very clean, spacious and bright.  I was amused by their Asian-conical-hat-shaped lamps.

    tra vinh banawe

I first wondered the sign said Tra Vinh Australia... only to find out thatone of the partners is the owner of Tra Vinh Australia.  Tra Vinh is actually a name of a province in Vietnam.

    Food
I was fortunate to meet one of the owners Michael who oriented me with some of their dishes.  Michael explained that just like any other cuisine, Vietnamese Cuisine has different versions in each region.  Thus, I was very intrigued as this is my first time to try the interpretation of the Southern region of Vietnam.

Apag Marangle: Kapampangan Family Salu-Salo at the Heart of Makati

When my mom's best friend came home from the US, I recommended that they dine at Apag Marangle Kapamangan Restaurant.  We've been meaning to dine at their Pampanga branch but could no longer find a consolidated time given our work.  Mom loved it so much and she wanted to try more of their dishes so she decided that we celebrate her birthday there.

    apag marangle
So that Sunday, we made reservations.

    apag marangle
Only to find the place barely empty on a Sunday night.  We reserved the entire mezzanine area which has the best ambiance.  It has kawayan tables and benches with a fish pond.

    apag marangle
Look at how huge their menu is.  It takes the form of a giant leaf.  There are so many options.  Although we are a group of almost 30, we couldn't try them all and we had a lot of left overs.

    apag marangle
Although Apag Marangle is found at the heart of Makati specifically at Park Square, their interiors and dish presentation will make you feel like your having a native-style salu-salo in Pampangaor some provincial area.

I highly recommend Apag Marangle especially for Balikbayans and foreigners who want to experience native Kapamapangan cuisine including exotic ones.  The pricing is reasonable and the ambiance and service is nice.  The serving size is good for sharing so the bigger the company, the better.  For us, this seems to be an under-rated establishment.

    Securing a Texas Alcohol Permit

    $
    0
    0
From the outside, running a successful bar or restaurant looks like it would be a lot of fun. After all, these are businesses that are generally full of people enjoying themselves, so what wouldn't be great about that? The difficulty is that for a bar or restaurant in Texas to legally serve alcohol, the business owner must apply for and secure a Texas alcohol permit. All of this is more complicated than it might sound at first, which is why business owners have to plan ahead and plan carefully before opening up an establishment that serves alcohol.

The Complications Involved In Securing a Permit

In order to obtain a liquor license in Texas, a business owner must become very familiar with the regulations involved and deal with a series of government bureaucracies. They must also deal with mounds of paperwork, all of which must be filled out accurately in order to be accepted. Sound simple? It’s not.

Quite frankly, the process for getting a liquor license in the state of Texas has become so complex, many consulting firms have been formed in order to better serve the needs of those who are applying for permits. Apply for a liquor license involves dealing with numerous government entities, including the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and the Texas Comptroller. All of this involves a lot of time and the kind of expertise in law and government that many business owners don’t have.

    Speeding the Process Along

The complexity of the application process means it can sometimes take up to six months for a business to obtain a permit. Any business owner who needs a liquor license would be understandably anxious to get one secured as soon as possible, which is why many owners do retain the services of consultants who are skilled in the permitting process. By using a specialized consultant, businesses can often cut the approval time down to just two months. Consultants do advise that business owners plan ahead and start the process at least three months in advance of opening a bar or restaurant, to give the consultant time to adequately prepare the application.

Every business is different, but no matter what kind of establishment is being run, having a legal license to serve alcohol is always required. Knowing there is skilled help out there to smooth the process is good news indeed.

But, you can't eat much of the Foie Gras because it comes with a slice of bread.

Save space for "The Beast" Mayura Wagyu BeefI really loved it but some of my family members complained that it was tough.  I guess I was lucky that the parts I  had was pillow soft.

Mom was lucky enough to spot the Baked Trevally with Chimichurri freshly cooked and placed on this serving platter.  She said it was so good!  But, by the time I got some, it was not as hot and juicy so I felt that it wasn't as good as my mom raved about it.

The service is superb as well.  They even had a surprise cake for my aunt.

    Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
The Cafe at Hyatt City of Dreams offers an expensive hotel buffet.  Is it worth it?  I think only if you would like to indulge yourself with Aburri, Foie Gras and "The Beast" Mayura Wagyu Beef.  Service-wise, I'd give it a perfect score.

Tsukada Nojo Bijin Nabe: A Japanese Beauty Hot Pot Birthday Celebration (S Maison)

The family was supposed to try Tsukada Nojo a few weeks ago but they felt guilty that I was not with them so they opted to try something else instead. (Yes, I'm so grateful to have a sweet and thoughtful family...Just a few days later, my cousin group messaged us that our aunt is inviting us there for her birthday celebration.

    tsukada nojo
I'm not sure about the boys but we ladies were quite intrigued.

    tsukada nojo
It was a Tuesday night and the place was almost unoccupied for a table of two when we arrived.

    Food
    bijin nabe
Bijin Nabe (750 php/portion) *Min of 2 person pero 1 portion
Aunt already ordered the Bijin Nabe for each table sothis was already waiting for us.

    bijin nabe

According to the menu "Bijin Nabe is a combination of the freshest vegetable, seafood, chicken cooked in their golden Jidori chicken stock".

    bijin nabe
This is the beautiful silky collagen that requires the chicken to be stewed for 8 hours until bones are dissolved.  And, yes this is the  beautifying component of our Bijin NabeUpon being seated, our server turned on the stove and the collagen began to melt before us.

    bijin nabe
It didn't take long before it boiled.

    tsukada nojo bijin nabe
While waiting, we were given a small glass of pure collagen and a piece of chicken each.  They also gave a set of their basic spices: Homemade Chili Oil, Leek Oil, Yuzu Pepper and Soy Sauce.

    tsukada nojo bijin nabe
The server then added all the toppings to the broth and left it to us to consume it whenever we feel its ready.

    tsukada nojo bijin nabe
As soon as the toppings began sinking, we figured we could already start devouring on the Bijin Nabe.

    tsukada nojo bijin nabe

After finishing the big hot pot, we thought we were finished.  But, then our server comes back and asks us what noodle to we want.  We chose the Thick Mochi-mochi Noodle (80 php) which is cooked together with the prawns.  Like the first batch, we finished this clean because it's so good!  This is truly a heavenly experience for the taste buds and the body.

    smoked salmon spring roll
Smoked Salmon Spring Roll (210 php)
This is the first time we've encountered a fresh spring roll in a Japanese restaurant.  To our surprise, we loved theSmoked Salmon Spring Roll as compared to the Vietnamese versions we've tried.

    chicken nanban
    Chicken Nanban Original (295 php)
The Chicken Nanban is deep fried and breaded chicken.  It actually reminded me of the chicken karaage but the menu state that the cooking style is from Miyazaki City.

Shitake Tsukane Nanban Original (335 php)
The Shitake Tsukane Nanban is just like the Chicken Nanban but with a shitake mushroom on the bottom.  The serving also doesn't have sliced lettuce salad on the side.  This made us regret ordering the Chicken Nanban because between the two, this is better.

Shitake Tsukane Nanban Spicy Hot (355 php)

I ordered the Shitake Tsukane Nanban Spicy Hot.  It was really spicy!  Good thing the boys raided this as soon as I took one cause I couldn't finish this on my own.  They really loved this!  In fact, they wanted more of it.  So if you're looking for spiciness, I challenge you with this!

Nikumaki Original (105 php) and Nikumaki Yuzu-Mayo (115 php)

Tsukada Nojo offers 4 kinds of Nikumaki.   I ordered the Nikumaki Original and Nikumaki Spicy but instead got the Nikumaki Yuzu-Mayo.

    Nikumaki Yuzu-Mayo (115 php)
It's okay that they gave the wrong order because I enjoyed the Nikumaki Yuzu-Mayo.  I don't even mind that it's extra rice.

For dessert, we had theHomemade Egg Pudding(150 php).  I personally prefer it to be without the caramelized top which was too sweet for me.  We also wanted to try the Yuzu Sorbet with Jellobut it was not available.

    Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
The entire family (all 20 plus of us) loved Tsukada Nojo Bijin Nabe.  We enjoyed everything we ordered.  Perhaps, our only concern is the service.  Considering that we were the only diners, there were times were no servers were on site.  My siblings who ordered Unlimited Tea was disappointed that they could not have it refilled as often as they wanted.

Season's Cafe: Chinese New Year 2017 Experience at Manila Pavilion Hotel

For the very first time, Tsinoy Foodies got invited to a Chinese New Year celebration so we were very excited!  Knowing thatManila Pavilion (formerly Waterfront Hotel Manila)has a lot of festivities in store to welcome the year of the Fire Rooster 2017, shobe and I  arrived there at around 6 pm last January 28, 2017.

    chinese dragon dance
At around 7 pm, it was announced that the Chinese New Year program is about to start.  Manila Pavilion Hotel's New General Manager, Mr. Franz V. Eichenauer, CHA, together with his family graced the event.

    chinese lion dance
And soon, the crowd gathered outside to...

watch the traditional Lion and Dragon Dance performances byChoy Li Fut Hong Sheng Koon Dragon and Lion Dancers.

    chinese lion dancechinese lion dance

It was a fun experiencewatching the hearing the loud beat of the drums accompanied by the lion and dragon dance.  But, what made everyone so enthusiastic and alert in picking up the lucky coins and candies being tossed.  While, I was taking a photo, I got hit on the head by a coin... Is that lucky?

    Salad Stations
    seasons cafe
While the Lion and Dragon proceeded to each facility of the hotel, shobe and I proceeded Season's Cafe for our Chinese New Year buffet.  While the usual rate for the buffet at Season's Cafe is usually at 1,200 php nett.  For this one night only, theyreduced their rate to 888 php net and the spread is mainly Chinese selections.

    waterfront manila
Since this is our first time at Season's Cafe, we wanted to try as much of their offerings.

    manila pavilion hotel
We skipped the salad stations and headed more on the dishes that involved more preparation and culinary skills.

    Soup Station
    hot and sour soup
    Hot and Sour Soup

To warm up our tummy, we began with the Soup Station.  There were 2 selections: Hot and Sour Soup and Egg Drop Soup.  Shobe (who doesn't like spicy foods) loved the Hot and Sour Soup which was not spicy at all.  I personally, would have enjoyed it spicier though.

    Bread Station
    bread station
Shobe was very happy with their freshly baked pastries so we bought some Ube Ensaymada, Ensaymada andCinnamon Roll for the family from the Patisserie before heading home.  They loved them!

    Cheese and Cold Cuts Station
    seasons cafe buffet

Being cheese and nut lovers, shobe and I were thrilled with their cheese and nuts selections.  They even have pistachios available which is not usually offered in other buffets because it is expensive.  Since we're used to the typical Chinese cold cuts, we didn't try those anymore.

    seasons cafe buffet
Both theSoy Chicken and Hainanese Chicken (see IG photo here) is a must try because they are both so soft, moist and delivers an almost melt-in-your-mouth sensation.  I'm intrigued by their cooking technique!

    Wanton Noodle Soup Station
    seasons cafe buffet
As much as we wanted to try their Wanton Noodle Soup, we were so stuffed already...

    Shabu-Shabu Station
    shabu shabu station
And, they also have a Shabu-Shabu Station which we were also forced to skip...

    Dimsum Station
    chicken feet

Shobe was a bit disappointment because there was no Hakaw available.

    tikoy
I have to admit defeat... My popular Chinese Tikoy with Egg Recipe is no match for their version of Tikoy.   Shobe tried the Buchi and liked it.  We couldn't guess what the others were filled with though.

    Deep Fried Station

    Main Dishes Station

Although the selection is limited, everything was delicious.

    Carving Station
    peking duck

The Peking DuckWrapsare so good! Just like the Soy Chicken and Hainanese Chicken, the Peking Duck meat is also tender and moist.  The Chinese Ham is worth a try too.  It was lean and meaty with least amount of fats.

    Dessert Station
    cakes
Better save room for dessert because they have a rather extensiveDessert Station.

The texture of theirCherry and Strawberry Crepe is perfect.  We managed to finish this despite being full.

    Beverage Station

The buffet rate is inclusive of the beverages.  Shobe enjoyed their brewed coffee.  She had one before the main meal and as a dessert accompaniment.

    Chinese lion dance

As part of the festivities, the Lions also passed bySeason's Cafe towish good fortune to the diners.

Overall, we Tsinoy Foodies, enjoyed our Chinese New Year 2017experience at Season's Cafein Manila Pavilion.  Because of our overindulgence, it was one of the rare moments that we were in a good and delightful mood to take a stroll and walk home.

    sinampalukang kambing
    Sinampalokang Kambing (320 php)
This is my first time to try a goat dish here in Manila.  Trying theSinampalokang Kambing brought me back to my childhood memories.

I've spent some of my summer vacations at my mom's ancestral home in Ilocos Sur.  Every time we'd go there, my uncle would have our staffs buy a goat.  By the time we'd reach the house, there will be a live goat tied to the wooden post by the well.  The dried well was said to bring good fortune to the family.  The goat will be served to us for dinner as a special delicacy.

How I miss those care-free days.  Everyday we would play with the neighborhood Ilocano boys (who used to bully and tease us by climbing up and make noise on our bed room window only to find out they just wanted to be playmates).  We would run or bike towards the tobacco fields to play hide and seek, luksong baka, patintero and our favorite of all: tumbang preso.  When we hear the church bell rings at 6 o' clock echoing across the entire town, we would head home for dinner which was the highlight of each day.  The manangs would set up our marbled folding tables and pair it with plastic stools by the window side so we could have a wonderful dinner with scenic view of the night sky wonderfully lit by stars, plaza light and church light.

    Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
If you're looking for heart warming dishes from the Northern Philippine provinces, Naimas Taste of Home should definitely be on top of your list.  Just expect the dishes to have a bolder taste and flavor than its native counterparts.  But, based on the impressions of my fellow diners, they seem to like it better.

I've long been wanting to try Your Local.  Finally, there was vacancy one weekend so we took the opportunity to dine.

    your local
With its dim lighting, you can barely see what's going on inside.

    your local
Upon stepping in, you'd understand why.  The place is dark with low lighting and the wood furnitures furthers the dark appeal.

My siblings who have triedYour Local insisted that first timers try the Torched Salmon Donburi so we ordered three of the same thing.  According to my siblings, the serving size is now smaller and the price is higher.  But, I think the serving size is just right as we had difficulty finishing our orders.

    lamb rendang
    Lamb Rendang (595 php)

Ahia said he tried the Lamb Rendangbefore and it was also bigger.  Again, I think the size is just enough for me.  The flavor is strong that it gives me an impression that is heavier than it actually is.
I don't think I'll order one of this just for myself next time.  I think this is more suitable to be shared although Your Local serving portion is for one individual meal of viand and staple.

    Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Your Local may not be as hot as it was but its still worth going back for despite the price increase.  I will definitely go back when I crave for their one-of-a-kind Torched Salmon Donburi
