Elmer's Pares Plaza: The Famous Imperial Chicken of Puerto Princesa Palawan

If you ask the locals even our tricycle driver during our Puerto Princesa Palwan trip which is their favorite food place, Elmer's Pares Plaza would be on top of their list.  Naturally, to complete our experience we just had to try it out.

elmers pares plaza
They have several brances along Puerto Princesa.  If it was just me, I'd be fine with their non-air conditioned main branch along Malvar Street.  But being with a companion, I opted it is more proper to dine at their Robinsons Place Mall Palawan branch.  It is located in the food court area.

elmers pares plaza
Imperial Chicken Meal (135 php)
The Imperial Chicken Meal is priced at 135 php.  I can't say it was sulit because as you can see the portion looks generous but there's not much chicken meat.  It has a semblance of a white chicken but with green onions and fried garlic.  I think I'd prefer the white chicken here in Manila which is more moist and tender.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Elmer's Pares Plaza is worth the stop only if it's convenient or you're on a budget.  Otherwise, there are so many other better options.

G's Cafe: First Stop in Our Cloverleaf Northern Bite Food Tour (Banawe Quezon City)

A few days ago, I got invited by Avida Land to experience a food trip in Banawe and our first stop is G's Cafe.

gs_cafe
Why Banawe?  Because just 15-minutes aways, Ayala Land Inc. is developing an 11-hectare project right at the juncture of North LuzonExpressway, Edsa and A. Bonifacio Avenue called Cloverleaf Balintawak.

cloverleaf balintawak
It will be a whole new place by 2020 as there will be QualiMed Hospital, Avida Towers Cloverleaf as residential towers, an Ayala Mall, retail strips and office buildings.

gs cafe
So along Banawe is G's Cafe is at the second floor of Gears Autoshop so it's not that the first thing that will catch your attention.  In fact, I was really surprised at it's wide floor space.  Just like in coffee shops, it has a counter with a cake chiller.

gs cafe
But, what makes it distinguishable from all other cafes is it's automobile theme.  It reminded me of the manly bikers bars along Mexico or Texas that I see on American films.

gs cafe
There's a rack where you can purchase mobile accessories.

gs cafe
What I particularly liked the most is their wall brick wall with cool stuffs that will remind you of road driving.

gs cafe
And, there's a bar with leather race car seats.  Pretty neat huh?  Seeing these seats also reminded me that when I was a little kid, it was one of my dreams to have my own racing arcade machine at home.  (Like most childhood dreams, that somehow faded awayI think because when I was a child I was materialistic and now, I'm more experiential.)

Food

camber crispy bacon and honey cured ham
Camber Crispy Bacon and Honey Cured Ham (165 php)
Seeing the beautifully prepared easy over egg on the Camber Crispy Bacon and Honey Cured Hamis already a plus for me.  Then it was served with a perfectly crispy bacon and savory cured hamHow can I not like this right?  And, I have to add that the potato chips served as side dish with garlic sauce is addicting!

radial roast beef sandwich
Radial Roast Beef Sandwich (228 php)
The Radial Roast Beef Sandwich is one of the best-sellers at G's Cafe (according to Swarm tips when I logged in!).  I totally agree with their conviction because I also fell for this tasty roast beef with creamy mushroom and melted cheese sandwich.

breaded ham and cheese sandwich
Breaded Ham and Cheese Sandwich (120 php)
If you like breaded dishes like cordon bleu, you'll definitely like their Breaded Ham and Cheese.

dark choco cheese panini
Dark Choco Cheese Panini (125 php)
To be honest, I was expecting the Dark Choco Cheese Panini to be an ordinary panini stuffed with chocolate spread which you can affordably buy from the grocery.   But, I was so wrong!  It was rich and bitter-sweet.  It reminded me of pandesal being dipped over thick hot cocoa but this was richer or maybe like Nutella without the hazelnut.  The cheese is very subtle.

Drinks

cappuccino
Cappuccino Regular (105 php)
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
We've only tried sandwiches and coffee which is not even a quarter of the menu at G's Cafe.  I'm very pleased with our dining experience.  I really love the theme and the price is very reasonable.  I look forward to trying more of their menu next time.

Tips For Baking With Chocolate

$
0
0
A decadent smell that sometimes comes from the kitchen is chocolate as it melts on the stove. You can also encounter a hint of heaven while something made with chocolate is baking in the oven, such as a pie or a cake. There are a few things to keep in mind when working with baking chocolate or any other kind of chocolate. If you are using the kind traditionally set aside for baking, you will discover that it has a slightly bitter taste. You need to add a bit of sugar for there to be a sweet taste, but there are some recipes that you can make that do well with a bitter chocolate, such as creme pie.

Chocolate is an ingredient that is sensitive to heat. You have to use a lower heat so that it doesn't burn. While it's in a pot or a pan, you need to stir it at a constant rate. If you don't, then it can begin to stick to the sides of the vessel. High heat can make the chocolate lose its shine. This is something to consider if you are making a pudding or a ganache.

Cut large pieces of chocolate into small chips before melting. This will decrease the melting time. A double boiler can help control the temperature. This is a saucepan of water with a bowl sitting on top of it so that the product isn't directly in the heat. When you begin making cakes, pies and other treats, use the chocolate when it's at room temperature. This is when it usually tastes the best. Salt can enhance the sweetness as well as the cocoa flavor. You can add butter to give chocolate a shine. Vanilla also adds a sweet taste, but you need to think about how much is used as it can be overpowering.

When you're using a solid block of chocolate or chips, avoid mixing it with powder. The flavors are usually completely different, and you will often get a mixture that is grainy. If you add sugar to the product, then consider melting the sugar with butter before adding it together.

To be honest, a Taro Puff is not something I'd order. You see I love Purple Yam or Ubebut I have a negative impartiality toward Taro except for Quickly Super Taro Ice.  My bias begun when I was little... You see in every burial, we would go to the temple to pray for the dead and then after, we have to eat the expensive vegan tasteless meals prepared by monks.  Most of them are made of taro and to me they had different forms and names but the same bland taro taste.  But when I tried these Taro Puffs, it's as if all the negativity flow out of me and I fully enjoyed and loved this!  I think the key is the ground pork mixed in.

Ever since I got to try the pioneer branch of Osaka Ohsho at SM Megamall Fashion Hall, I've already envisioned it opening another branch.  Years gone by and finally, Osaka Ohsho opens its second branch at SM North EdsaThe BlockAnd opening at the same time also by Relic Group is CafeKumori.

The invite is very simple and it didn't leave any details except for the time and place.  So I bet the guests were all pleasantly surprised with theJapanese Picnic Party Theme.

Shobe got so enthusiastic with their coloring activity.  She managed to finish the Osaka Ohsho coloring card using the watercolor pencils and brushing it with water after.  While the Kumori Coloring Page was half done until now because she found it too difficult.

Sabreen's Sea Food Market Restaurant: Revamped 27-Year Old Palutuan in Malate

Since we are Manila residents, we have been passing by the Sea Food Market Restaurant for decades now.  Recently, we noticed that it looks different.  The name has been changed to Sabreen's Sea Food Market Restaurant.

Aside from the store sign, you won't notice the enormous change until you step in.

sabreens seafood market restaurant
It has become an upscale place.

Every table has this beautiful set-up.

sabreens seafood market restaurant
The kitchen is still the same.  It is as big as ever.  Their head chef is Chinese.  And, they have 10 chefs in total.

sabreens seafood market restaurant

I'm told that the new owner is a Jordanian with a Filipino wife.  And, they are very meticulous with cleanliness.  So as you can see everything was squeaky clean from the aquariumsuntil the kitchen.

All the ingredients that will have to be used in cooking has to be bought.  Everything is organized and properly labelled.   Selecting is easy and you can have them bagged and placed on your trolley so you can have them cooked.

sabreens seafood market restaurant
They are very methodological when it comes to keeping their goods fresh.  Thelive ones like the lobsters and lapu-lapu are swimming in the aquarium.  Shellfishes are also soaked in water.   While other fishes are iced.  I was surprised to see that they also have kimchi.  But, I think it was reasonable because I saw Korean diners during my visit.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
By far Sabreen's Seafood Market is the cleanest and most upscale palutuan I've been to.  I noticed that most of their diners are foreigners who are return customers because they are familiar with the staffs already.  With the ambiance and the good food quality, I can see why they keep coming back.  As with most palutuan, it's best to come in groups to keep the costs down.  Also, they don't have a menu so the bill needs a bit of a guesswork.  Prices for the ingredients are indicated but the charge per request varies.

Tip: For the whole month of February 2016, they offer a 10% off discount and wines are on sale for 1,000 php for two bottles.

My foodie companions have nothing but praise when they found out that Eat Fresh Hongkong Street Food was part of our itinerary.  Naturally, I was also intrigued.

It's easy to spot them with their big sign.  There are also parking slots available.  Although I don't think they'd suffice during peak hours.

I really love their turo-turo concept.  You can simple point to what you want to order and they can cook it right away.

There are many options to choose from even innards...

You can just grab your sticks and goso you can enjoy it like the usual street foods...

Food

Hongkong Street Food on Stick
eat fresh hongkong street food
Lobster Balls (38 php/2 pcs.)
For the Hongkong Street Food on Stick, you can choose between fried or dipped in curry sauce.  We chose the former.  But on my next visit, I'll definitely try the one with curry sauce.  The Lobster Balls are just okay.  Good enough to fill the tummy but not spectacular that I'd want more of it.

eat fresh hongkong street food
Breaded Scallop (40 php/3 pcs.)
The Breaded Scallop is very affordable.  It's even cheaper than an order of Chicken Nuggets from Mc Do right?  Taste-wise, it's the usual fried snack.

eat fresh hongkong street food
Fried Stuffed Tofu (50 php/2 pcs.)
The Fried Stuffed Tofu is a fulfilling dish.  I think this is a bang for the buck order compared to the rest.

Fresh Fruit Shakes
eat fresh hongkong street food
Fresh Strawberry Shake (85 php) and Fresh Kiwi Shake (85 php)
Theirs Fresh Fruit Shakeslooked really delicious.  However, all of us found it too sweet for our taste.  Even my friends who are cola addicts found this too sweet!  What a waste of the fresh strawberries when they overloaded it with sweeteners.

Cloverleaf Balintawak Complex will be built 15-minutes away from Banawe

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
My expectations were too high for their street foods and fruit shakes.  I felt like I just got what I paid for.  But, because they are very cheap, I still recommend trying it out just for the experience.  Next time, I'll go for their real meals.

I've shared with one of the best lomi's in Batangas.  But, where do you go when you're craving for lomi in ManilaCafe Felisa for me is one of the best places to have lomi.

cafe felisa
Cafe Felisa is located at the Aloha Hotel along Roxas Boulevard.   It is the next door neighbor of Sze-Chuan House.

Being situated in a hotel, the restaurant is quite spacious.  But, the interior is to dulland plain for mestay longer than my meal duration.

Lomi Special (180 php)
One of the comforting factors of lomi is that it's served steaming hot to warm up the tummy.   Check!  The Lomi Special is served that way.  This is so hearty, flavorful and filling because it has generous ingredients, the thickness of the soup is just right and the rich egg noodles is smooth and easy to slurp.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Cafe Felisa serves hearty lomi that will surely satisfy you.  Only drawback perhaps is the price.

Goto Monster: Goto and More by the Streetside (P. Ocampo Ext. Makati)

It was a drizzling afternoon when I arrived at Goto Monster near the corner of Prima Vera St. And Pablo Ocampo Extension.

goto monster
It was easy to spot as tricycles are stationed there.  It is open air so you can just drop in to dine.  See those folding table?  At night, crowds build up so they set those up by the street.

goto monster
Because inside, they only have a long and big red wooden table.

goto monster
There is a rack inviting challengers to their Man vs Food.  For 750 php, you have to finish their monster bowl of goto special equivalent to 10 of their regular bowls kn 45 minutes to win.  Only 1 man has won this challenge as he finished in 44 minutes.  I wanted to try their challenge but their selections tempted me more.  By the glass, you can see printed graphics of iconic people in a cartoonish Goto Monster-fied way.  We found that quite amusing.

goto monster

And, right next to the red tableis their kitchen so you're food is delivered hot and fresh (as they cook them from scratch).

Food

Fresh Tofu Topped With Onion Leeks, Crispy Dilis and Ginger Sesame Sauce (150 php)
Look at this beauty.  The Fresh Tofu Topped With Onion Leeks, Crispy Dilis and Ginger Sesame Sauce is a good source of protein and the taste is so refreshing to the palette.  I loved this!  I can tell my tofu-loving friends will adore this as well. This isn't on their menu so I guess it's like a secret menu?

Bagnet Fresh Spring Roll (120 php)
The Fresh Sping Rolls are my favorite.  I am really impressed at how they were able to innovate this with a Filipino touch. Together with the main ingredient are either bean sprouts (when available) or mustasa leaves, mint leaves and cucumberI liked the Bagnet Fresh Spring Roll the most because it's a savory centerpiece among the light tasting fresh vegetables.

goto monster
Mushroom Fresh Spring Roll (120 php)
The Mushroom Fresh Spring Roll is light tasting.  But, together with their three sauces, it is delicious!  Don'tfeel guilty with using their sauces as they are made of olive oil.

Talong Fresh Spring Roll (120php)

The Talong Fresh Spring Rollis filled with their talong chipsThis is actually pretty good.  I highly recommend this for vegetarians.

Goto Special (95 php)
The Goto Special is their lugaw with ox tripe, toasted garlic, onion leeks, tinapa flakes and creamy duck salted egg.  Unlike other lugaw, their blend is healthy and vegan.  It only makes use of tumeric and ginger.  The serving portion is hefty so I think the price is reasonable although it is more expensive than the usual goto.

bagnet goto
Bagnet Special (95 php)
Among their goto selections, the Bagnet Special is the most popular one.  I was surprised that many of my friends knew about this when they saw my instagram post.  This is a must try!  They make their own bagnet which is cool right?  And, it's pleasurably crunchy to bite too. This is a must try!

goto monster
Chikcharon Special (95 php)
The Chikcharon Special is their lugaw topped with their chickcharon.  Among the four, I liked this the least.  But, my companions liked this so it's just a matter of preference.

shitake mushroom goto
Shitake Mushroom Special (95 php)
My favorite goto is the Shitake Mushroom Special.  This is the first time I've tried a goto with shitake mushroom and I'm an immediate fan.  I used to be crazy for the burgers with shitake mushroom.  But, believe me I'd trade those for this anytime of the day.  I just couldn't stop until there was nothing left on my bowl.

Side Order
tokwa chickcharon
Tokwa + Chickcharon (95 php)
The Tokwa + Chickcharon is a great combination.  On its own, I found the chickcharon too salty so eating it with tofu, rice or goto tones it down a bit.

I forgot to take a photo of the Tokwa + Talong Chipsbecause probably that was the first one to be emptied.  It is a really good finger food.  Nakakaaddict!

When dining at Goto Monster, always leave room for dessert.  All their desserts are drool-worthy!  It's difficult to decide which one to go for so you'll have to have more.  Starting off with my favorite which is the Bibingka Waffle ala mode.  Sometimes, they use Vanilla Ice Cream.  But, since I love Ube, I appreciated the Ube ice cream more.  I cannot put into words how amazing this treat is!  I'm not even a fan of waffles and I fell so much in love with this.

Goto Monster even makes their own ice cream.  My favorite is the Leche Flan Ice Cream.  It's chilled and yet, the creaminess is fantastic!  Chocoholic and kids will surely enjoy the Banana Chocnut Ice CreamThe Bibingka Special Ice Cream didn't click much for me because I felt that the dessicated coconut didn't harmonize well with the bibingka-based cream.

Drinks
goto monster
Iced Pineapple Kalamansi + Fresh Herb (75 php)
The Iced Pineapple Kalamansi + Fresh Herb is one of the best healthy drinks I've tried.  It was rejuvenating, refreshing and not too sweet.  This beats most of the more luxurious restaurant drinks I've had.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Goto Monster is one awesome discovery.  It's offers comforting food you'd gladly have often.  And, they're open 24 hours so cravings can be satisfied anytime.  Next time, I want to take on their Man vs Food Challenge.

Since we're from Manila,Banawe seemed like a distant dining area for the family.  Thus, I was surprised when mom was insisted that we go all the way toHealthy Day because she saw it on TV.

It's quite convenient that they have their own parking space and their guard is very accommodating.

I really liked their coffee latte art table.

But, what intrigued the family is theirmini green house.

I really liked the concept of Heatlhy Day.  But, the price is too steep for their not-so-outstanding dishes.  It gives of an impression that healthy dishes are expensive which shouldn't be so.

Balai Pandesal: Pillow-Soft Pandesal and More (Makati)

$

Last December, I was invited to take part in the Blogger Roadtaste by Balai Pandesal.

balai pandesal
Since I was in the area for my Christmas Shopping tasks, I decided to give it a try.  Although I've passed the Dela Rosa Car Park before, this somehow escaped my attention.

They had a lot of pastry options displayed.

You can have them dine in or take out.

Cheddar Ensaymada (40 php) and Ham & Cheese Bun (39 php)

I must admit, I have been drawn into the expensive Queso de Bola Ensaymadas.  But upon trying their Cheddar Ensaymada and Ham and Cheese Bun, I fell in love with this classic all over.

Baguio Raisin Bread
I'm not a fan of the sugary kind of raisin bread.  But if it's your type, give their Baguio Raisin Bread a try.  It's so soft and the price is very reasonable.

18" Super Meaty Pizza (79 php)
If you like pinoy-style pizza, which has a dough base that isn't chewy but has a defining crispy like biscuit to it and a slightly sweet tomato sauce, you'll enjoy the 18" Super Meaty Pizza.

Pandesal (7 php/each), Pandesalitas (3.50 php) and Soya Milk (37 php)
They have two kinds of Pandesaland Pandesalitas: Sweet and Salty.  I prefer the latter.  I also liked their Soya Milk.

Balai Wheat Bread (75 php/whole) and Wheat Pandesal (36 php/pack of 6)
What I love most in Balai Pandesal is their whole-wheat selections.  The family tries to be health conscious and opts for whole wheat ones when as much as possible.  We've been buying whole wheat pastries for decades and we have whole them every single day so believe me we've tried a lot of brands and variants over the years.  So far, Balai Pandesal has the softest and smoothest whole-wheat bread I've tried.

Fook Yuen: Best in Crabs Since 1988 (Banawe Quezon CIty)

Our fourth stop for our Experience theNorthern Biteis one that I'm sure the family would love.  Fook Yuentakes pride in having the best crabs since 1988.  In our family, crabs are considered to be one of the celebratory dishes.  It's as special as lechon, steak and lobster that is usually present during occasions.  So naturally, I have a positive inclining towards crabs that got me all excited when I saw their sign board.

fook yuen banawe
That lady with the huge DSLR lens is Jill of thefoodscout.net.  I don't think I've shared this yet.  Back when I was in college, there was a talk about blogging and Jill wasthe speaker in food blogging.  I got inspired so much that I started my blog right after.

fook yuen banawe
Most Chinese restaurants I've been to that serve crabs are more upscale.  Believe it or not, for me a place like this is more comfortable to eat some crabs.  It reminds me of home.  And, home is where I really get my hands dirty without any restraints.

Crabs
fook yuen banawe
Fook Yuen Crabs (Seasonal Price)

When it comes to crabs, I prefer it cookd simply either steamed, boiled or fried.  I don't usually go for saucy ones.  But the Fook Yuen Crabs is unlike the other sauced crabs I've tried! The creaminess and sweet coconut milk blend is so addictive. The crabs are cooked with precision too.  We've been told that their crabs are freshly delivered live everydayI also discovered thatfarm-raised crabs are tasteless so their crabs are sustainably caught fresh from the sea.

fook yuen banawe
Fried Crab with Salt and Pepper (Seasonal Price)
Of course, if you want to taste crab meat at it's finest, you can't go wrong with the classic Fried Crab with Salt and Pepper.

Oyster Omelette (200 php)
The Oyster Omellete is chunked and loaded with oysters.  This is a good oyster omelette.  But sad to say, the crabs were the star of the show.

Fook Yuen is the place to go if you're craving for crabs.  Chinese-style cooked crabs are among the best out there.

It was a chilly Christmas night when the family found Tootsie's Homemade Specialties.

EnteringTootsie's felt just like visiting a relatives home.  It's facade doesn't look at all like a restaurant.  It felt like a warm and welcoming house.

As we entered, the place echoed with a chorus hymn as the choir of nuns sang Christmas carols.

Pancit BukOh! (187 php)
We absolutely loved the presentation.  At first glace, you'd think it's just coconut.  But if you mix it, you'll see that it's a pancit dish.  This is so good.  The coconut and the pancit combination is amazing!

NBA Cafe: American Food Over Basketball Games (SM Aura Bonifacio Global Ciy)

$

Sorry sports fans, I know I will sound like a loser to you all.  But, I have to come clean and be honest that I don't really watch basketball games.  So, this visit to NBA Cafe is really food and family induced.

nba cafe manila

Perhaps, I've seen a few clips or a basketball game.  But, never had I had the interest or patience to finish watching an entire basketball game (all four quarters).  Believe it or not, I was never even enticed to watch UAAP back in college.  The closest thing to watching a basketball game for me is to watch anime basketball series like Slam Dunk, Buzzer Beater and Kuroko No Basket.

nba cafe manila
It's not that I don't like the game, I just don't like to be an idle spectator.  So when it comes to NBA, I don't watch the basketball game itself but playing the NBA Live video gamewith my siblings on our Sega Mega Drive, SNES and Playstations is something I really enjoyed during my childhood.

nba cafe manila
Seeing the NBA memoriabilias like authographed basketballs...

nba cafe manila
and NBA postersreminded me of my childhood days when Iplayed basketball as a leisureWe actually have two half courts in our house which we haven't used for years!  I used to play the 3-2-1 shooting game and half-court basketball game with my little sisters and my big brother's classmates whenever they'd drop by.  Those were fun times!  The last time I played basketball was during my first year college when we were forced to take it as PE and I don't recall it to be as fun...

nba cafe manila
There were also toys which includes my all-time favorite NBA player: Michael Jordan. =)

nba cafe manila
As expected, the set up is similar to a sports barThis one is the biggest and grandest I've encounter yet.  It has a huge screen that I'm sure game watchers would love.

nba cafe manila
The wall of basketball jersey is a cool colorful display.

nba cafe manila

I'm really impressed with the interiors as even the benches is textured like a basketball.

Food

Soup
nba cafe manila
Ale, wisconsin cheddar, cauliflower soup (175 php)
The Ale, wisconsin cheddar, cauliflower soup is an interesting cream soup and it has bacon it is which is a plus.

Salad
nba cafe manila
Roasted Mushrooms (300 php)
The Roasted Mushroomsalong with thecaramelized onions, arugula, mascarpone cheese, carrot in  truffle vinaigrette is superb!

Mains
nba cafe manila
Beer battered fish and chips (320 php)
The Beer battered fish and chips is served with hand-cut triple cooked kenebec fries, tartar sauce and coleslaw.  The family enjoyed this especially the fries.

nba cafe manila
Lemon brined roasted chicken (450 php)

The Lemon brined roasted chicken  laid on a bed of mashed potatoembellished with succotash.  It comes with parsley gravy which is delicious!

nba cafe manila
Baby back pork ribs (1120 php/whole)
When you order the Baby back pork ribs, you can choose between sweet kansas bbq sauce or spicy texas bbq sauce to be rubbed.  We chose the former.  You will still get both as extra sauce.  Both are very flavorful.  I personally prefer the spicy texas bbq sauce. It is also served with corn, sauteed vegetables and dried sweet potato chips.  The ribs were very tender and moist... almost fall of the bone but not quite so.

Burgers
nba cafe manila
Cheese burger (385 php)
The Cheese burger is a good one with gruyere cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, sliced dill pickles, and truffle aioli.  The truffle aioli made this more than the typical cheese burger for me.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
All my expectation of NBA Cafe was met.  NBA fanatics will love the interiors plus the big screen to watch the NBA games.  While, non-fanatics like me will still appreciate displays and good food.  We're really lucky to have the only NBA Cafe in the world.  As of my posting NBA City restaurant in Orlando has closed down.  The price being reasonable, I really can't find any reason to pass up the chance of experiencing dining here.

Last Friday, I was invited to attend the VIP Night and Grand Launch of Ichiba: Japanese Market in Newport Mall.

ichiba japanese market

As the name Ichiba: Japanese Market (Ichibameaning Japanese Market) hints, it is inspired by the famous Japanese markets: Tsukiji, Kuromon, Kyushu and Hokkaido

Chef Watabe Happily Carrying the Otoro
The highlight of the event is the Hon-Maguro or Kuro (Black Maguro) or Northern Blue Fin Tuna cutting show.   Hon translates to genuine which hints that this is one of the top-grade among tuna variants (second to the Southern Tuna).  In fact, this giant Northern Blue Fin Tuna (usually from the Atlantic Ocean or Mediterranean Sea) is worth 150,000 php and was flown in from Misaki Suisan Japan by CEO Bryan Tiu, best known to be the founder of the Teriyaki Boy chain of restaurants just for the event.  He surely knows  how to treat his guests.  Aside from Tsukiji, Kanagawa's Misaki Market is well-known for Tuna trading (600-1,500 trades per day).  And like in Tsukiji, Tuna's are sold by bidding.  Even in Japan, there are only a few places where you can watch a tuna cutting show.  I'm very thrilled with the show because it's a first time for me.

otoro
Otoro
Toro translates "to melt" and is the belly of the tuna.  There are 3 basic kinds of Toro (depending on the part of the tuna): Toro (lowest and leanest), Chu-Toro (chu translates to middle is semi-fatty) and Otoro (fattiest, lightest in color and cut just under the skin).

tuna cutting show
Sashimi cutting is very complex.  I've encountered 2 kinds of Otoro: Shimifuru and DandaraShimifuru is at the front right behind the head.  While, Dandara is towards the backShimifuru is better because the fat is evenly distributed and it looks netted and marbled with veins.  On the Dandara, there are fat stripes.  And then, there's also Kama Toro which is from the collar part.  I wish I had Jiro's Sushi Handbook to know more...

otoro
Otoro
Gosh!  See the Otoro's fatty veins?  This is another first time for me...  Otoro is rarely served outside of Japan because usually the tuna served here are the lowest and cheapest class of tuna Yellowfin Tuna and Bigeye Tuna which only have the Akami or the lean red meat part.  I now understand why friends and family are crazy over Otoro and must have it whenever they go to Japan.  No need to chew as just a massage by your tongue is enough.

otoro
Chopped Otoro
Not sure what this is called.  But, my my this Chopped Otoro is so fatty and oily that it quicky melts in your mouth just like butter.

And before you leave, you can also check their mini grocery for Japanese snacks.  They also have cute seafood hats for pictorials.

So check out Ichiba: Japanese Market as there are so many choices whether it's from their food stations, regular menu or Japaneselive seafood

I've heard nothing but good raves from publications, blogs and online review sites about ArroZeria.  Thus, it's long been on my wishlistSuch wish was granted when my cousin invited us over for her birthday party and despedida party in one

arrozeria century mall
We were a big group of 20+ so we appreciated the long table arrangement they prepared for us.

The interior is interesting.  There were inverted red ladders attached with bulbs hanged from the ceiling.

The Gambas Con Gabardina Negra  is mostly recommended by others so ordered one.  As expected, the squid ink is hardly distinguishable.  The crunchiness is what makes this pleasurable to munch onThemojo picon dip was much appreciated since it's spiciness and zestiness combats the oiliness well.

We love the Negra more.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
My high expectations of ArroZeriawas not met.  For more than 1,000 php per person, I'd say we spent a lot for a so-so Spanish dinner.  At the very least, we expected consistent quality on our orders but that was not what we got.  The service was slow too.

Breakfast at Antonio's: Top Tagaytay Destination (Tagaytay City Cavite)

When it comes to a Tagaytay destination, all my friends: foodies and non-foodies mention Breakfast at Antonio's being on top of their list.

breakfast at antonios

There must be something that Breakfast Antonio's does that makes it consistency packed.  Parking can be challenging during meal hours.

breakfast at antonios

Before you reach your seats, you'll pass by this tempting pastries first.  My mom is a big fan of Breadsticks.  In fact, we buy so many every time we visit.  And, she also asks friends and family going to Tagaytay to buy her some.

There's a separate counter for these merchandise.

I love their pantry.  It's so neat, cute and organized.

Being casual, clean, bright and spacious, it becomes a convenient dining destination for all purposes (family outing, dating and casual meal) and occasions (birthdays, anniversary etc.).

I prefer the area over the veranda because it's cooler and you could go for sight seeing while waiting for your orders.

There are also magazines available.

Breakfast Favorites
Eggs Florentine (445 php)
The difference between their Eggs Florentine and Egg Benedict is that the former has an addition of spinach (20 php addition to the price).   Because I love greens, I opted for the former.  This is one of the best eggs benedictI've tried.  The smoked ham is delicious and the pouched egg is cooked preciselyAlthough I'm generally not a fan of English muffin, it's a great staple component to this dish.  The cinnamon pineapple and banana isgood for cinnamon lovers like me.

An order of the Mini Burgers has three kinds: Beef with smoked caramelized onions, Lamb with raita and Pork with peanut sauce and kimchi.  We ordered this for sharing.  I loved the Pork the most because it's not the usual burger with it's nutty and spicytwist.  The Lamb is a bit dry so Beef comes second.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
No doubt Breakfast at Antonio's success has no where to go but up.  Because eery dining experience here has been consistently pleasant, I hope to try it's big brother Antonio's some day.  But for now, Breakfast at Antonio's is more within my budget's reach.

A few weeks ago, me and my friends had a spontaneous getaway to Club Balai Isabelin Talisay Batangas.  There are a lot of activities that you can do there, one of which is eating! And, I'm excited to share our dining experience atTerraza Cafe.

terazza cafe
Terraza Cafe isopen air so there's no air-conditioningIt exudes a homey vibewith its cabin interior and wooden tables and chairs.

terazza cafe
There are three dining areas available: main dining area, function room and pool side.

My pick would be the pool side and here's why.  Just ask for a candle to keep the flies away.

Food

Salad and Appetizers
house salad
House Salad (240 php)
We started with a healthy House Salad.  Everything is fresh: greens and fruits.  What brings granduer to this simple looking dish is their home made kamias dressing.  It bring a refreshing tropical and citrus delight.

Hearty Soups and Stews
bulalo
Bulalo (475 php)
One of my favorite soups is BulaloThe Bulalo is a pre-hispanic bone and marrow broth originating in Southern Luzon.  I'm not just a fan of bone broth for it's rich savory concentrated flavor but also for it's health benefits.  Way before bone broth has become a trend thanks to Paleo and Gaps diet, pre-historic records shows thatit has always been known as an elixer around the world.  That is why we Filipinos havethe Bulalo, Koreans have the Seolleongtang, Japanese have theTonkotsu Ramen, French have theConsome and Italians have the Brodo.

Batangas is well known for it's Batangas Beefso having Bulalo to this pioneering city is a wise choice.  Terraza Cafe's is one of the best one I've had.  The chunky tender beef, melt in your mouth marrow and warm and rich broth is simply comfort food for the soul.

kalderetang kambing
Kalderetang Kambing (430 php)
I've been eating Kalderetang Kambing and it is only this time that I've seen one with grated cheddar cheese on top.  It made the dish more balancedand its a contrast to slight gamey flavor of the goat that didn't escape my senses.

kare kare
Kare-kare (450 php)
One ofthe dishes that really got us into munching more is the Kare-kare.

Grilled and Fried Corner
chicken inasal
Chicken Inasal (300 php)
The Chicken Inasal is tasty but I'd enjoy it more if it was more tender and juicy.

balai lechon liempo
Balai Lechon Liempo(380 php)
The quickest one to be emptied is the Balai Lechon Liempo.

balai bagnet
Balai Bagnet (360 php)
How can you resist this beautiful Balai Bagnet?  For the price, this enormous chunk of delectable fat and tender meat is quite a steal.

sisig
Sisig (300 php)
Gorgeously slathered with egg and mayonnaise, the mild spicy chewySisig was well-appreciated.

Seafood
salt and pepper seafood
Salt & Pepper Seafood (280 php)
The Salt & Pepper Seafood isn't exactly how I expected it to be.  It was more like sweet and spicy for me.  The seafood: squid, shrimp and dory is all similarly battered so it's difficult to distinguish one from another unless you bite into it.

tilapia na may minatamis na sampalok
Tilapia na may Minatamis na Sampalok (250 php)
The secret to the sweetness of the Tilapia na may Minatamis na Sampalokis that they use fresh and live tilapia.  The tilipia cubes are so soft that they almost dissolve once popped into my mouth.

Vegetables
grilled eggplant
Grilled Eggplant (185 php)
It took some time getting used to consuming the Grilled EggplantOur local tongues are used to eating grilled eggplants with bagoong (shrimp paste).  If you love curry, you'll find liking inbalai's special spicy coconut cream sauce that serves as a dip.

Buffet

terraza cafe buffet
If the resort is almost fully occupied, they offer a buffet.  Breakfast is included in the accommodation.

terraza cafe buffet
The menu changes.  But I'm quite please that whether it's breakfast, lunch or dinner,  there's fresh fruits available.  We noticed that the items we ordered ala carte were also candidates for the buffet selection.  There are also a minimum of 5 viands to choose from in addition to the salad, fruits and other dessertsSome of the desserts we loved are their Mango Buko Loco and Churros.

terraza cafe buffet
There's a live station too.  During breakfast, you can order omelet with toppings of your choice.  For lunch and dinner, it becomes a pasta station.  I love their pasta!

So here's my breakfast place with a bowl of cereal.

terraza cafe buffet
I also had a warm bowl of champorado,a slice of puto and a hot cup of brewed coffeeThe puto is so delicious!

During dinner time, there's a live band and wonderful lights set up all over the trees by the pool making it a cozy atmosphere.

Drinks
terraza cafe buffet
Health is Wealth (140 php) and Mango Shake (140 php)
I really liked their fresh and healthy drinks.  Everything we had was very refreshing and not too sweetened.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Terraza Cafe is offers reasonably priced delicious dishes served in generous portions.  I consider this food heaven a great complement to everything else in Club Balai Isabel.
