Mona Lisa Ristorante: Authentic Italiana Cuisine (SM Aura Premiere)

Almost three years ago, I spotted Mona Lisa Ristorate at The Commerce Center in Alabang when I dined at Studio Kitchen (now Allium in Makati).   I vowed to come back to try it but never managed to go back due to hectic schedule.  I'm glad it opened in SM Aura which was more convenient for us to visit.

The glass grants us a view of its alluring interiors.

I love the structural design, paintings and the chandeliers.

Even the tie of the servers fits the motif of the place.

Food

Insalata
Fagioli Bianchi Di Tonno
Fagioli Bianchi Di Tonno (350 php)

The Fagioli Bianchi Di Tonno is mixed greens, chunky tuna, red beets, feta cheese, boiled egg, red and white beans (supposed to be white asparagus according to the menu) in Italian vineigrette.  We found this salad interesting enough to be emptied quickly.

Pizza
smoked salmon pizza
Smoked Salmon Pizza (550 php)
We're quite health-concious so we chose their special thin-crusted multigrain pizza.  The
Smoked Salmon Pizza is topped with ricotta cheese, asparagus, caramelized onions and sliced lemon.  My family is very picky when it comes to pizza but they adored this to the littlest bit.

Prima (Pasta) Vegetarian
cannelloni
Cannelloni Spinaci and Ricotta Solo (315 php)
The Cannelloni Spinaci and Ricotta Solo is spinach bits and ricotta cheese filled in cannelloni shells.  If you can appreciate the special flavor of spinach enhanced in terms of the creaminess and mild zesty ricotta cheese, you'll find this heavenly like we did.

Prima (Pasta) Meat and Poultry
arrabiata
Spaghetti All' Arrabiata Calebrese Solo (315 php)
The Spaghetti All' Arrabiata Calebrese is supposed to be penne on the menu but we requested to have it substituted to spaghetti.  It has Italian sausage, black olives, mushrooms in spicy and tangy vodka tomato sauce.  I found the blending of flavors quite balanced so I enjoyed this.

pollo
Pollo Pizzemente Solo (320 php)
The Pollo Pizzemente Solo is a penne pasta with bite-size slices of chicken thighs and breast, asparagus, brocolli with creamy porcini mushrooms, light cream sauce and truffle oil.  The light cream sauce masks the dryness of the white chicken meat.  The truffle cream sauce is light allowing us to appreciate the natural taste of the asparagus, brocolli, porcini mushrooms and chicken.

Home Made Pasta
ravioli
Ravioli ai Funghi Porcini Solo (305 php)
The
Ravioli ai Funghi Porcini tops among all the dishes we had that night.  It's ravioli stuffed with porcini mushrooms in a creamy porcini parmesan sauce with truffle oil.  I love that they didn't scrimp on the truffle oil!

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Mona Lisa Ristorante is one of the best authentic Italian restaurants we've tried!  Their subtle but not bland or dull blending soothes our taste profile.  We'd love to come back when craving for Italian.  Everything we ordered is cooked with precision.  The service is good too.

678 Korean BBQ Manila: Spotted Park Sang-Myun and Owner Kang Ho-dong (San Miguel By The Bay MOA)

On August 15 last year, it was an unforgettable Friday school day  for me because I was scolded and humiliated in class by my professor for forgetting to bring my book to class.  According to him, it meant giving a false pretense that I was too confident.  Naturally, I was a bit down during class.  To my surprise, the family kept calling and texting me to meet them in 678 ManilaatSan Miguel by the Bay at SM Mall of Asia

678 korean bbq manila
Naturally, I told them I'm still in class but they insisted that I check out this newly discovered Korean BBQ restauranteven if they have to wait for meSo after class, I hurriedly rushed off to the San Miguel By the Bay Areato search for 678 Manila which they told me was beside Razon's

678 korean bbq manila
It was easy to spot since it had Kang Ho-dong's Standee upfront.  It didn't look big from the outside so I was surprised upon stepping in that it was HUGE!  The wooden interiors, shiny cemented floors, dividers and postswith lively Korean songs playing on the background gave it a unique comfortable but luxurious vibe that sets it apart from other Korean restaurants in Manila we've been too.  The place was surprisely cool for a barbecue place.  I guess it is because of the ventilation shafts that efficiently vacuums all the smoke away from the grillers.  It had a large dining space affording privacy and comfort to every table.  The kitchen is just as spacious and you could see what's going on inside too.  It had a large number of staff wearing black caps, black shirts and black pants.  They equipped with wrist watch that alerts they when you hit the buzzer on your table making all of them turn their heads to you.  They also have earpieces and mics (like the bodyguards in Korean telenovelas) so they can quickly receive their orders and before you can even remove you finger from the buzzer, a server is already approaching you're table to make sure you're instantly attended to.

The next table was a cheery Korean crowdSome of them looked really familiar.  My siblings pointed out that it was Park Sang-Myung (He played in my favorite Korean movies like the tear-jerking Miracle in Cell No. 7 and She's on Duty and several Korean telenovelas like Mary Stayed All Night, King of Baking and Green Rose) and Owner Kang Ho-dong (Korean MC and Comedian) among the group.  We wanted to ask for a photograph since we're huge fans but we were too shy.  The female server told us that Lee Min Ho even promised to drop by the night before but didn't so perhaps he would drop by that night.  We hoped and waited even until the company of Park Sang-Myun and Owner Kang Ho-dong left but he didn't show up. =(

678 Korean BBQ Menu Manila Philippines

I was really amazed by the fact the quality of the food, atmosphere and the appearance of Korean celebrities so I researched the about 678 as soon as we went home.  Although it is hidden and still unpopular in Manila, it appears to be a famous global franchise.  It has branches in New York, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Sydney, China and Tokyo where renowned foodies and chefs such as Anthony Bourdain, Rich Torrisi and David Chang have dined at.  There's even an article stating it turned an 8-year vegetarian back to eating meat.

Food
678 korean bbq manila
As soon as we ordered, we were served their complimentary brown rice tea.  Then, our server sets our charcoal griller and fills up the sides with red bell peppers, onions, sweet corn with mozzarella cheese and raw egg.  It's the first time we've encountered a griller designed like that.  Later on, as the meats are grilled, the oil will spill on the sides adding flavor to them.

We were expecting the typical banchan to be served instead we were served the 678 Lettuce Salad and 678 Veggie Salad...

Fresh Cut of Pork Belly (350 php)
We had no idea on what to order so we just ordered everything suggested by our server starting with the Fresh Cut of Pork Belly served with a daikon.  Our server took charge of the entire grilling process and even thought as how to enjoy every dish.  As you can see, the thick pork belly was initially placed on a flat slate.

Then, our server got a grid where our 150 gram ofFresh Cut of Pork Belly was grilled further.

Soon, it was all sliced and ready to be eaten.  The egg on the side is cooked as welltaking a custard form.

678 korean bbq manila

Eating it is different from other samgyupsalsaccording to the instructions given to us by our server.  First, we mixed the wasabi with the 678 secret sauce.  We dipped the cooked pork belly there  applied some 678 veggie salad and 678 lettuce salad.

678 korean bbq manila
This is how mine looked like.  All the components are refillable for free by the way.  Wow!  Their quality meat combined with their sauce and salads are so delicious!  I couldn't stop myself from having more and more of it.  Surely, this is one of the best samgyupsal I've ever had.

Special

Beef Bulgogi (500 php)
The
Beef Bulgogi is served with three kinds of mushroom and lots of shallots.

Since it has sauce, it is cooked in a wokatop the charcoal.  We really loved its tenderness and flavor.  It's notoverly sweet but a pleasantly flavorful making it great viand with rice.

Side Menu
678 korean bbq manila
Egg Wrap (Cheese) (200 php)
The Egg Wrap is filled with Cheese and laid on a bed of ketchup.  At first glance, it looks similar to the Japanese Dashimaki Tamago

678 korean bbq manila
But, it's different because it's not flavored with soy and it's closer to the Americanomelette because it's filled with cheese, rougher in texture and more dense.  We loved this!

Meal Menu

The Lunch Box is served in this tin with a comical picture.

The Lunch Box comprises of rice, fried egg, kimchi, achovies, tofu, seaweeds and black beans.

The server then shakes it vigorously giving it a loud clunk before finally opening it and revealing this glorious delicious mess.  We enjoyed this new experience and if you love seaweed like us, you'd really appreciate this.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
I'm really glad that the family happened to walk by 678 Korean BBQ Manila.  This is one of our best Korean dining discoveries.  I highly suggest that you try this or you're certainly missing a lot!  We're really eager for a revisit too.  Crossing my fingers that we spot more Korean celebrities there. =))  The service is excellent!  I'm really impressed at how much they have invested in their gears and training.  The price is very reasonable as most items are good for sharing so bring some company with you in every visit.

Sincerity Cafe & Restaurant: Famous Sincerity Fried Chicken (Lucky Chinatown Mall)

When it comes to fried chicken,Sincerity Cafe & Restaurant has made a big name.  It has even expanded with a branch in Lucky Chinatown Mall making it more accessible to many.

A queue is to be expected if you're dining on a weekend.

sincerity cafe restaurant
There's an indoor area and al fresco too.

Chicken
sincerity fried chicken
Sincerity Fried Chicken Whole (300 php)
Yes!  As you expected, we ordered the famous Sincerity Fried Chicken!  I can't really pinpoint exactly what makes it so different from the rest.  It's not oily, its crispy on the outside (you can really hear crackles when you bite!) with juicy meat.  The batter has the right blind of spices which is a bit on the peppery side.  The cheap pricing at 300 php for a whole chicken is also a plus.

Seafood
fried oyster cakes
Fried Oyster Cake Big (200 php)
I'm not really particular when it comes to oyster cakes.  As long as the texture is good and the oyster is flavorful but cleaning tasting, I'll dig in.  The Fried Oyster Cake fits my preference perfectly.

deep fried frog legs
Deep Fried Frog Legs Big (200 php)

Frog and frog legs may seem exotic to some.  But, it's actually a common fare for our family.  We often order the Deep Fried Frog Legs.  We love these!  Although we cook this at home, we just can't pinpoint their technique.

Rice
kiampong
Kiampong Special Small (60 php)
The Kiampong Special is not the best salted rice around because I find it lacking in flavor and components but a good staple with the already tasty viands.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Sincerity Cafe & Restaurant's famous Sincerity Fried Chicken deserves the recognition its been gathering.  I certainly hope they maintain their quality as they expand.

R & J Bulalohan Tapsilogan Atbp. (R and J): Almost As Good As Home (Mandaluyong)

$

Living my whole life in the Philippines, regretfully, it has only been recently since I've learned of the existence of bulaluhans.  A lot of my friends swear by R & J Bulalohan Tapsilogan Atbp. (R and J) so I took their advise and dined there one late night.

r & J Bulalohan
I really didn't know what to expect as I saw cars and motorcycles parked outside it's tent-like premise where plastic chairs and tables are set up.

r & J Bulalohan
As I got deeper inside, I realized the tent was only an extension of the place which was built in kawayan.  It was well-lighted with utility lights.  It was very crowded and the scattered sound of chatters were echoing.  There is also a television turned on in loud volume.  Its walls are filled with photos of actors, singers and famous celebrities dining there.  The customers are a mix crowd from all walks of life.

Food

Beef
bulalo
Bulalo Special (270 php)
Of course, a must order is their best-selling Bulalo Special.  It was a big bowlful of beef shank or bulalowith lettuce.  The broth was rich in what I assume to be real beef flavors and not artificial.  It was served warm too.  You can drink the broth to your heart's content because there are staffs making rounds with a hot pitcher of broth for refill.

bulalo
Bulalo Regular (220 php)
I personally prefer to have the Bulalo Regular which had more beef and without the lettuce.

Chicken
fried chicken
Fried Chicken with Chilli Sauce (320 php)
The Fried Chicken with Chilli Sauce was surprisingly good too!  It was really crunchy despite being skinless and bare naked (without skin).  It also had juicy meat.  The chili sauce makes it even more enjoyable.

Vegetable
chopsuey
Chopsuey (75 php)
The Chopsuey is a mix of lettuce, bell peppers, young corn, mushrooms, carrots, string beans, kikiam and fishballs.  It was pretty good.  I'm just never fond of this healthy dish.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
R & J Bulalohan Tapsilogan Atbp. (R&J) serves dishes especially bulalo almost as good as home.  It offers genuinely good food with honest to goodness quality ingredients without enhancers.  The pricing is also affordable that anyone can dine here.

Susie's Cuisine The Best in Pampango Kakanin: Recommended for Both Dine In and Pasalubong

Having encountered Susie's Cuisine before at the Pamangan Fiestang Kapampangan 2012, I told the family to make a quick stop there.

susies cuisine

susies cuisine
Judging from it's wide parking space and facade, it looks like a full blown restaurant.  We weren't sure if it was open since it was Maundy Thursday but I'm glad it was.

susies cuisine
They have a lot of products already packed in boxes indicating that they are a famous pasalubong stop.

susies cuisine
They were shelves of pasalubong items from all over the Philippines.

susies cuisine
We bought our favorite Ocampo Uraro, the one on the left most, and Rico'sLengua de Gato from Baguio there.

panings
They are located the a few metes from Paning's Store so you can buy directly or if you're lazy there with a mark up of course.  When I was little, I used to de-shell a lot of these just to please my mom.  My mom used to love seeds and nuts but never had the patience to de-shell them.  Unfortunately, due to aging, she can't have much of it anymore.

susies cuisine pampanga
It has a dining area and they have a utensil holder similar to that of food courts on the side.

Food

Pasta
baked macaroni
Baked Macaroni Solo (60 php)
I guess there's no such thing as quick stop for my family as they were instantly tempted to order meals.  My youngest sister loves Baked Macaroni so she ordered this one.  It was just okay.  As you can see it looked pre-heated.  I prefer Nathaniel's version over this.

Pancit
palabok
Palabok Solo (50 php)
The Palabok was pretty good.  It's not as commercialized as those you usually encounter in Manila.

Mirienda
tidtad babi
Dinuguan (50 php)
What everyone enjoyed the most is the Dinuguan prepared Kapampangan style and what they locally called as Tidtad Babi.  It's a first encounter for all of us and we'll probably search for more!  This is why Kapampangan has always been one of the best Filipino cuisines for me. =)

Kakanin
moche moche
Moche-Moche Small (210 php)
I've tried the Moche-Moche before at the Pamangan Fiestang Kapampangan 2012, I just didn't know that it was from Susie's.  It is the Kapampangan version of the Japanesemochi.  So when I saw it, I ordered one just so the family can try it out.  It comes with coconut milk sauce.  The family didn't like it though.

leche flan
Leche Flan Medium (120 php)
How good is Susie'sLeche Flan?  It is one of the best Leche Flan we have ever tried so we took a "lot" home with us for us to enjoy and to give them to relatives.  And, we will probably ask all friends and relatives passing by Pampanga for some. =D

Leche Flan Medium (120 php)
My family is a BIG fan of Leche Flan.  We've tried so many versions from restaurants to special order.  So far this is one of the most affordable yet richest and creamiest one we've encountered.

leche flan
Leche Flan Medium (120 php)
Don't let the exteriors full you, inside it is very fine and smooth.

tibok tibok
Tibok-Tibok Small (100 php)
Last but definitely not the least is Susie's signature kakanin, the Tibok-Tibok.  It's the kapampangan version of maja blanca.  According to the articles framed on its walls, this has been featured in several newspapers and magazines.  Of course, I've also tried it before at the Pamangan Fiestang Kapampangan 2012.   This was the last stock available so I felt lucky that the family could try it.

latik
Latik
It is to be topped with Latik(which is coconut milk turned coconut milk curd).  I really liked the Tibok-Tibok but I think the family enjoyed the Leche Flan more.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Susie's Cuisine The Best in Pampango Kakanin surely lives up with its promised tagline.  Make a stop whenever you have the chance.  The service is good as the staffs are very friendly.  The price is also an enticing factor.

Curry House Coco Ichibanya: Now in the Philippines (Estancia Mall Capitol Commons Pasig)

Two weeks ago, my cousin's fiance Aileen Ang of Booky Manila invited me to Curry House Coco Ichibanya which was managed by her friend Julie.  We were among the those who were invited to try dine so they can test out their kitchenCurry House Coco Ichibanyaoriginated in Nagoya in 1978.  It has now grown to a global brand with over 1,300 branches worldwide.  It is brought to the Philippines by Hubert Young, the same guy behind UCC, Mitsuyado Sei-Men, Sakae Sushi and many more.

curry house coco ichibanya
Curry House Coco Ichibanya is located at the basement level of the new Estancia Mall in Capitol Commons in Pasig.  The seating capacity is limited but their fast preparation time and turn over will allow them to cater to many diners.

curry house coco ichibanya
It has the food display that's typical for casual dining Japanese restauants.

On the table is a tray for utensils and napkins, pickled radish, hot spicy powder and their feedback forms.

Food

Original Curry

curry house coco ichibanya
Cheese Curry(260 php) with Shrimp Cutlet (180 php) with 200g rice (-20 php) with Medium Hot Curry Sauce
For every curry dish, you can decide the spicy level and amount of rice serving.  You can also add some toppings. The toppings in this case is the Shrimp Cutlet which is not usually offered even in a Tonkatsu restaurant here in the Metro so I was eager to try it out. I'm glad I did because I enjoyed it.  You can also add for soup, drinks and salad which we chose to pass on.

Omelet Curry
curry house coco ichibanya
Pork Cutlet Omelet Curry (360 php) with 200g rice (-20 php) with Standard Curry Sauce
The Omelet Curry dishes are limited only to two spicy levels: Mild and Standard.   The Pork Cutlet was good but I can't say it's better than the leading katsu brands already here. The omelet was soft and fluffy and filled with Japanese rice.  It's fluffiness actually gives you the impression that you're eating something lightuntil you feel the fullness of your belly.  I was quite surprised that I found the 200g rice already quite heavy... The 200g is 100g less than their standard and default 300g. I can't imagine how big of a serving their 600g is.

curry house coco ichibanya
Beef Curry Omelet (330 php) with Standard Curry Sauce
The Beef cubes as you can see are thick and chunky but tender and easy to bite through.

curry house coco ichibanya
Spinach (80 php) and Mushroom (80 php) withMedium Hot Curry Sauce
I chose to add Spinachand Mushroom to theBeef Curry Omelet.  This allowed me to chose from the full range of spicy levels that I can mix together with the boringStandard Curry Sauce.  I chose Medium Hot so I could appreciate the topping components still.  After trying it, I regretted not going for the upper limits.  Good thing, one of my companions ordered the Super Hot.  Unlike the usual curry which was dominated by peppery flavor, that one has a nice spicy kick that zizzles and lingers on your mouth.   On my next visit, I'll try the hottest of the hottest: the Crazy Hot.

Meat Curry
curry house coco ichibanya
Cheese Hamburger Curry(360 php) with Sausage (130 php) withMedium Hot Curry Sauce
The Cheese Hamburger Curry is their best seller so you can't miss it out.

curry house coco ichibanya
Cheese Hamburger Curry(360 php) with Sausage (130 php) withMedium Hot Curry Sauce
Oozing with cheese, how can it not be good right?  For a wholesome meaty meal, we thought adding Sausage was a good idea. This is one of the best combos you can make.  Both are winners in my book.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Curry House Coco Ichibanya is a must try!  No wonder it grew so fast, it serves really good curry dishes.  I found myself swiping the curry sauce clean in every each meal.  Even on a dry run, the food was served speedily.  No doubt this will surely gain followers soon.

Fisher Farms: Easy to Cook and Serve Gourmet Bangus Products

$

Ever since we were young, my mom taught us to love our kitchen.  For each meal that we have at home, we would all divide the pre-meal and post-meal tasks among us.  And, on most day, we enjoy doing the food preparation, cooking and cleaning.  But, there are days when we're lazy or too few that the tediousness is inconvenient.  On those days, we're glad there's frozen products like Fisher Farms that's easy to cook and serve.

fisher farms
Fisher Farms Gourmet Bangus Products are our latest discovery.  The things that made us notice this brand is it's affordability, packaging and quality.  Another big consideration for us is that it's fish so it's a very healthy option as opposed to most frozen processed meat products.

And, it has so many variants so it's not "nakakasawa".  In fact, my medical student sister loves their variants.  She is on 72-hour duties so she brings Fisher Farmsproducts as her baon.  She wakes up really early around 3 am and easily prepares the Fisher Farmsproducts in a matter of minutes.

For the whole family I highly recommend the Fisher Farms'Gourmet Baked Rellenong Bangus and the Smoked Deboned Milkfish.

We opted for the baking method so it's healthy.  We didn't thaw it overnight though because we got too excited.  We did the normal thawing.

fisher farms
So here it is!  So big it occupied the entire pan.

fisher farms
We didn't even have a platter big enough for it so we have to divide it into two.  It's so yummy na "nakakaaddict talaga" because of all the ingredients.  We just wished they skipped the MSG and caramel color.

We also baked the Smoked Deboned Milkfish.  Promise it's the best smoked bangus I've ever tried.

The flavor is really smoky and not salty unlike the rest I've tried.

No doubt we'll buy more Fisher Farms products in the future!

When it comes to Spanish cuisine, Casa Armas Tapas Bar Y Restaurantehas already established its name industry.  Thus, the family aware of its consistent quality has come back for another revisit.

casa armas tapas bar y restaurante
It is located in Greenbelt 2 beside Chihuahua Mexican Grill and Margarita BarUpon entry, we were welcomed and ushered to seats.  It has a very serene feel despite being packed for that Saturday night.

I wonder how many bottles of wines are stored on their wall display.

Upon being seated, we made our usual orders and soon a Complimentary Bread Basket was laid before us served with olive oil.  The warm bread is pleasing and filling to the tummy.

Gambas Al Ajillo (365 php)
The Gambas Al Ajillo is my favorite.  It is drenched in smooth and buttery olive oil with loads of garlic bits.

Tapa (250 php)
The Tapa is slighty oily but pleasantly flavorful and tender.  It has lots of white onion rings that adds a complementing crunch and spice to the cured meat.  You can lessen the oiliness by dipping it on the vinegar.  My mom loves this dish.

The Paella Valenciana is saffron-and-tomato-spiced Spanish bomba rice topped with pork, chicken, mussels, shrimps, chorizo, egg, bell peppers, peas and beans.  I'm very impressed with this one!  This definitely deserves to be on my best list when it comes to paella valenciana.

The Paella Negra is a good rendition too.  But, I prefer the PaellaValenciana over it.

Curros Con Chocolate (150 php)

In terms of the texture of the churros, their Curros Con Chocolate is the best one I've had so far.  It was crispy, light as a feather and not oily at all.  The chocolate dip is good too.  The consistency was neither too thick or dilutedand the flavorwas rich and bitter-sweet.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
I'm very pleased with the food quality and service of Casa Armas Tapas Bar Y Resturante as always.  If you're looking for a good place for Spanish dining, Casa Armas should be on the top of your list as proven by its years of recognition.

Osaka Ohsho's Launches All New Teppanyaki Festival (SM Mega Fashion Hall)

This is my nth visit at Osaka Ohsho because there's always something new to try in addition to their famous gyoza.  (see my previous visits here and here) Osaka Ohsho has recently launched there teppanyaki festival offerings.

Teppanyaki Festival
osaka ohsho teppanyaki
Mixed Shellfish Teppanyaki (325 php)
The Mixed Shellfish Teppanyaki offers the treasures of the sea: ocean fresh scallops, mussels and clams seasoned with garlic and Japanese sake then sauteed in a Japanese onion sauce served with sauteed mixed vegetables.  This is so good that I couldn't stop tossing more of it unto my mouth.

osaka ohsho teppanyaki
Sakana Matsuri (Fish Festival) Teppanyaki  (420 php)
Fish lovers will surely be delighted with the Sakana Matsuri (Fish Festival) Teppanyaki composed of Norweigan pink salmon, Pacific Blue Marlin and Yellow Fin Tuna steaks in butter, garlic and Japanese Sake.  For staple and veggies, it has thin slices of asparagus, potatoes and carrots on the center.

Get the best of the land and sea with the Salmon Bacon Teppanyaki (310 php).  A serving has 5 pieces of fresh Norweigan pink salmon wrapped in premium honey cured belly bacon strips glazed with Japanese teriyaki sauce and sprinkled with diced spring onions.

The Bacon Cut Pork Belly Aparagus Teppanyaki is another winning option with its crunchy asparagus spears wrapped in savory sweet sukiyaki and teriyaki sliced pork belly strips covered in sesame seeds and spring onions.

osaka ohsho teppanyaki
Sake Beef Teppanyaki (330 php)
Carnivores have the Sake Beef Teppanyaki to satisfy their meaty cravings.  It is sauteed sukiyaki sliced beef in Japanese sake, garlic and butter with a side of Japanese Coleslaw.

osaka ohsho teppanyaki
Mixed Mushroom & Bacon Teppanyaki (310 php)
The bold tasting Mixed Mushroom & Bacon Teppanyaki is a must try.  Don't forget to dip this tantlizing roll of shitake, shimeji brown and eringi Japanese mushrooms, asparagus spears in honey-cured belly bacon strips in their original tangy Japanese Urinchi Sauce.
The Prawn Teppanyaki (495 php) in butter and garlic is amazingly good when dipped in their Japanese Wasabi Mayo dip.  I so love the Wasabi Mayo dip that I'd recommend having the other dishes with it.

Ika Sugataki (250 php)
The Ika Sugataki is soft sliced mildly spiced squid rings served with stir fried vegetables.  I found this quite addictive so yes, I finished this to the very last bit.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
I'm glad that Osaka Ohsho added these to their menu.  I'd gladly have them again especially the Mixed Shellfish Teppanyaki together with the Original Gyoza and the dessert Peanut Butter and Banana Gyoza.

Al Batra Restaurant & Coffee Shop: Authentic Mediterranean Dinner (Jupiter Makati)

The family is constantly in search of new gastronomic adventures so for my mom's birthday I book us a reservation at Al Batra Restaurant & Coffee Shop.  I found this restaurant through TripadvisorThis is one of the rare halal restaurants in the Metro.  It's conveniently found at the heart of Makati too.

al batra restaurant coffee shop
It has a huge green and white sign.

al batra restaurant coffee shop
But, it took as awhile upon parking to notice that the entrance is at the side as it is located on the second floor above 7-11

al batra restaurant coffee shop
It was surprisingly very spacious and segregated into two parts: the cafe area with small table able well-cushion loft seats with a window view ofJupiter Street.

al batra restaurant coffee shop
and the dining area with big round black tables near the kitchen and the frozen fish display area.  There were foreign customers at the cafe area but we were the only group at the dining area.  Did I mention they are open 24 hours?

The supervisor welcomed us and was quite hospitable but for the first time ever we've encountered this peculiar problem: they ran out of utensils so half of our group had to use plastic utensils (which was bought from 7-11).  The supervisor was kept apologizing about it stating that Middle Easterners only use their hands when eating.  Is this true?  So with plastic spoon and forks at hand, let's proceed to the food.  We occupied 4 big round tables.  And, there were many seating yet to be availed of so the shortage really surprised us.

Food

Cold Appetizers
al batra restaurant coffee shop
Mixed Al Batra Appetizer Small (180 php)
Since our table wanted to try as much as we could of the menu selection starting with the appetizer, we ordered the Mixed Al Batra Appetizer.  It hadHummos (chickpeas and oil), Mutable (mashed eggplant oven baked with yogurt in olive oil), Tabula (mix chops vegetable salad with burgol seasoning in olive oil), Green Salad (carrots, tomatoes, cucumber, special spices olive oil)  served with 2 Al Batra Bread.  Although I usually love flat bread, the Al Batra Bread did not appeal to my liking because it was neither soft nor crunchyWe also wanted to try the Sambusa best seller but out of stock.

Main Dishes
meat biryani
Meat Biryani (450 php)
We had no idea that the Meat Biryani would be goat meatwith biryani spices in biryani rice.  I was the only one who appreciate this.

Being a curryenthusiast, I ordered the
Chicken Curry.  It was good but it failed to stand out against the rest of our orders.

broasted chicken
Broasted Chicken (360 php)
I'd never imagine myself ordering Broasted Chicken in a Middle Eastern before but our excited parents were so sold by our table's server that they ordered one for each table.  I'm glad they did because it was really good!  It was served with fries but we opted for rice.

Grilled

My cousins husband Matt who was the onlyman on our table was yearning for some meat so we ordered the Meat Kebab.

The Meat Kebab is served covered under two thick and warm Al Batra Bread.  It was tender and succulent.  It is one of the best kebab I've ever tried!

The Lamb Chops was served skewer-style with grilled onions and bell peppers in between but without the stick.

The Lamb Chopswas another hit among us!  But, the experience would have been less tiring if we were not using plastic utensils to dissect the big chunks.

FreshSeafood
hammour
Hammour (Lapu Lapu) (100 php/100 grams)
As soon as we arrived at Al Batra, my uncle was enthusiastic about their very affordable freshseafood so he ordered one steamed Hammour (commonly known to us as Lapu-Lapu) for each table.   Iusually encountersteamed Lapu-Lapu during our lauriatChinese dinners but I have to admit, this tops all of those.  They use different herbs and spices which works like magic.  It was cooked with outstanding precision too.  All tables were amazed with the soft, moist yet solid consistency of our beautiful steamed Hammour.

Rice
kabsa
Kabsa Rice (120 php)
Kabsa Riceis a tomato based rice.  It's my first time to try this but it felt as familiar as eating any tomato-based stew with rice.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
If you're looking for impressive authentic Mediterranean cuisine, definitely try Al Batra Restaurant & Coffee Shop.  We were all very satisfied with all our orders.  It is one of the best we've tried.  We'd love to come back...  Hopefully they have utensils enough for us by then and the air-conditioning is better.

The Cafe Mediterranean: Revisiting After a Decade (Rockwell Powerplant Mall Makati)

$

I knew I've tried The Cafe Mediterranean before.  At first, I can't seem rememberBut, dining there refreshed my memory that the family ate there upon the opening of Rockwell Powerplant Mallway back in 1994.

the cafe mediterranean

It was the firstMediterranean Cuisine I've encountered and during that time.  But, unforunately, I haven't grown the palette to appreciate at that age.   As I've shared before, it was in such an age when my taste buds were limited to visiting and revisitingmy favorites: The Old Swiss Inn's fondue, Schwarzwälder's "Kraeuterhend'l", Yum-Yum Tree and Pancake House

the cafe mediterranean

Well, I've come a long way from that.  I've become more eclectic and more adventurous and I've come to love Mediterranean cuisine among other cuisines.

the cafe mediterranean
After trying a lot of other Mediterranean places (click label to see the other 25 which I've tried for the past 2 years that I'm blogging), it's time to go back to where I started.

Food
the cafe mediterranean
Hot Sauce and Garlic Sauce
Laid on each table is their Hot Sauce and Garlic Sauce.  I implore you to use this to your hearts content as I did especially for the grills.

Appetizers & Little Plates
the cafe mediterranean
Sampler Plate of 3: Labneh, Hummus and Falafel with Pita Reg (275 php)
For starts, we had the Sampler Plate of 3: Labneh, Hummus and Falafel with Pita.  This is my first time to try the Labneh and Falafel.  The Labneh is like thick and smooth cream cheese with a comforting tanginess since it's yogurt-based.  I loved it!  The Falafel is a deep-fried ball filled with chickpea fillings.  The coating was a bit thicker than I expected so it was rough and surprisingly filling to eat.  It left a pretty good first impression for me.  The hummus is one of my favorite Mediterranean dishes.  Their version of the Hummus was very good.  It was the richest and creamiest I've encountered yet.

the cafe mediterranean
Sampler Plate of 4: Moutabal, Falafel , Foule and Hummus with Pita Reg (275 php)
The Moutabal was really good because it has a bold smokey and sweet taste.  I think this is the best moutabal I've tried yet.

Sandwiches (all served with fries)
the cafe mediterranean
Panino Vegetariano with Housemade Yogurt (210 php)
I've indulged so much on the starters so the next course is lighter.  The Panino Vegetariano with Housemade Yogurt is filled with grilled zucchini, eggplant, onions and fresh tomatoes.  The Ciabatta was prepared well so it was crispy on the outside yet soft to chew.

Pizza
the cafe mediterranean
Pizza Mediterranea (385 php)
My companions requested the Pizza Mediterranea without the anchovieswhich is probably why it lacked the X factor for me.   It could either be because it almost has the same ingredients as the Panino Vegetariano with Housemade Yogurtwhich we had just before this.  On the bright side, I liked their tangy herby sauce and their crispy yet chewy dough.

Large Plates
the cafe mediterranean
Shish Taoukwith Basmati (315 php + 30 php)
I was very impressed with their Shish Taouk!  It is definitely very far beyond the other shish taouks I've tried.  It was so tender, juicy and flavorful.  YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS!

moussaka
Moussakawith Basmati (310 php + 30 php)
I've always loved the moussaka and order one whenever I see it on the menuSomehow this Moussaka failed to leave a positive impact for me to order it again.  But my companions continuously praised it.

parmigiana
Eggplant Parmigiana with Whole Wheat Pita  (295 php + 30 php)
The
Eggplant Parmigiana was cheesy but too oily for me.  Perhaps, I would have liked this better if the sauce was more zesty to counter the oiliness.  My friends seemed to enjoy it though.

Kebabs
Grilled Beef with Basmati (395 php + 40 php)
The Grilled Beef is served withLabneh and TabboulehI loved the Grilled Beef for its superb savoriness and tenderness.  It was pillow-soft and goes well without sauce or with any sauce.  This is definitely one of the best kebabsin Manila!  The Tabbouleh however, lacked the slight crunchy texture and minty essence from the parsley that I'm yearning for.

Desserts
Panna Cotta (100 php), Tartufo Al Cioccolato (100 php) and Tiramisu (175 php)
The Panna Cotta has a smooth, creamy and gelatinous texture.  It goes so well with the orange sauce.  The Tartufo Al Cioccolato is a very rich with mini chocolate bits to boot.  Yet, it's the kind of richness that you'll want more of.  The Tiramisu is more mascarpone than the coffee and liqueur component so alone it was lacking for me.  But, I've discovered that eating the Tartufo Al Cioccolato together with the Tiramisu delivers a surprisingly magical sensation.

Drinks
Mango Lassi (135 php)

The Mango Lassi is very refreshingly sweet with only mild sourness.  Compared to the other lassi I've tried, I think this is suitable for those who want to be initially acquainted with this drink as the tartiness won't overwhelm them.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
The Cafe Mediterranean is definitely worth visiting and revisiting over and over especially for their kebabs!  I'm not even a fan of kebabs but they just made me an avid fan of it.

Farmacy Ice Cream and Soda Fountain: My Delicious Prescription For the Soul (Fort BGC)

$

After our dinner, my little sister suggested we check out Farmacy Ice Cream and Soda Fountain which she has already tried during one of her dates.  Everyone was enthusiastic about it since we all found ice cream to be our comfort food.

farmacy ice cream soda fountain manila
It was around 9 pm on a Saturday and Farmacy had a busy buzzing crowd.  The glass windows allows you to see it's unique interiors.

farmacy ice cream soda fountain manila
Going in, I found the space too narrow.  It had a bar-type seating by the counter and another bar-type seating by the glass windows leaving a 1 person isle in the middle.  The kitchen where I assume they make their homemade ice cream is found on the right far-end which had windows but there's really no space for you to stand and watch.  I'd advise you to visit during none peak hours so you can enjoy the ambiance which was our mistake.  My poor little sister who is a pharmacist was so excited to have her photo taken by an empty bar stool but before I can take a photo of her, she was prompted to get off the stool as it was already assigned

farmacy ice cream soda fountain manila
Space is well-utilized the shelves add to the 19th century pharmacy while extending usefulness to hold their glass wares.  Between the racks, there's a bar which is laid on top of their fridge.

farmacy ice cream soda fountain manila
There's an ice cream bar where you can try the flavors. We didn't get to try these because we couldn't stand the tight feel and decided to wait outside till we were assigned to a table.  Being a sister company and next door neighbor of Wildflour Cafe + Bakery, it  has a similar concept of having an outdoor seating with wooden table and chairs coupled with bottled candle lights.  You can also use Wildflour's drink frequency card here so you can achieve your free 10th drink faster.

farmacy ice cream soda fountain manila
During the few seconds we were there, I noticed that you can try a small silver spoonful of the ice cream and then drop the spoon on the bottle dedicated for dirty spoons.

Sundaes
black forest sundae
Black Forest Sundae (280 php)
My little recommended trying their Chocolate Ice Creamwhich is Farmacy's best-selling flavor and she loved its bitter-sweetness.  We didn't want to settle with the plain ice cream options so we chose theBlack Forest Sundae instead.  The Black Forest Sundae is a Double Chocolate Ice Cream laid on fudgy chocolate brownies topped with chocolate sauce, whipped cream, chocolate bits and morello cherry.  I personally found this too sweet because of the over-rich and fudgy chocolate brownies and sweet chocolate sauce.  But, my little sisters loved it.

Ice Cream Floats
very berry float
Very Berry Float (270 php)
Being in an ice cream and soda fountain shop, big brother thought it wise to order from theirIce Cream Float selection which had the best of both worlds.  He ordered the Very Berry Float which was an interesting purple concoction with Strawberry Ice Cream and Blueberry Soda.  I loved this but my siblings preferred the Black Forest Sundae over this.  The sweet and sour bubbly Blueberry Soda and the similarly sweet and sour creamy Strawberry Ice Cream were a great duo.

Brown Cow (270 php)
Having the same price as the Very Berry Float, I thought it was inequitably not worth the money to spend for the Brown Cow.  Instead of a homemade soda priced at 120 php,  you get a canned A&W Rootbeerwhich they priced at 65 php and their homemadeVanilla Ice Cream priced at 130 php per scoop.  This means that if you order the Very Berry Float, you're only paying a premium of 20 php and loss the waffle cone for the glass presentation.   But, with the Brown Cow, the premium is raised to 75 php for a flavor that you can blend at your very home.

Very Thick Shakes
Very Thick Shakes: Black Sesame, Coffee Almond and Pistachio (260 php)
I'm quite fond of milkshakes so I went for their Very Thick Shakes which allowed me to choose three ice cream flavors to be blended.  The server suggested a couple of famous blends by their customers like Double Chocolate, Cookie Dough and Vanilla but they seemed to common and unintriguing to me.  They had 26 homemade ice cream flavors so of course, I took the chance to be playful.  Thus, I decided to take the deviant route with a trio of Black Sesame, Coffee Almond and Pistachio.  It bore a dominantBlack Sesameflavor with a detectable hint ofCoffee Almond and probably super faint or barely present flavor of Pistachio.  I must say, this is a comforting blend which I'm proud to have created. The roastedBlack Sesame gave a nice aromatic hint that's lightly sweetened so I was able to finish my 1 glass and half (from the silver cup) with pleasure.

Farmacy After Dark
Tequila Sunset (320 php)
My only sister who seems to enjoy alcohol more than the rest of us tried the Tequila Sunset.  It was a great choice since even I appreciate this refreshing drink.  It had a scoop of Coconut Sorbet and Pineapple Sorbet floating atop the mixture of Ginger Ale Soda and tequila.
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Overall, I think we all enjoyed the experience of having to try Farmacy Ice Cream and Soda Fountain.  I'd recommend it as a must visit for anyone.  But, I don't think we're enticed to come back.  Their pricing, inadequate service and lack of comfort due to the cramped space doesn't seem to justify another visit.

For my uncle's birthday celebration, we were supposed to dine at Four Seasons Hotpot City but when we arrived at around 7 pm, we got the queuing number of 168 so we decided to head elsewhere.  Learning from our experience, we tried to call for reservation for my cousin's birthday celebration.  But, the reservation slots were full.  Finally, for my cousin's graduation celebration, he successfully book a reservation by calling days ahead (and knowing the right person).

Four Seasons Hotpot City is located just next to Movie Stars Cafe, you can't miss the bright lights, huge signage and long lines.

For the main dining area, there were two kinds of tables: (1) tables of 2 sharing 1yin and yang hotpot and (2) tables of 4 to 6 sharing 1 yin and yang hotpot.  I like that the place looked very clean and fresh.  It looked like a high-end supermarket except that you are equipped with white trays and plates instead of carts and baskets.  I liked the idea of there plant boxes on the dividers, it adds to the fresh vibe of the place.  Floor are clean as I can see the staffs wiping the floor spills non-stop.

four seasons hotpot city
On the left side are the function rooms which they call VIP rooms.  Fortunately, dear cousin booked us for VIP Table 4 and 5 which had a nice window view of the bay.  But, what may the VIP tables cool is that we each had our own pot.  This is quite convenient for me since I have seafood allergies.  It's also more spacious!  Believe me, our table is not this clear or organized as soon as we started.  I'm not sure though if we had a space problem or a service problem since we found it didifficult to call the attention of the servers to remove our empty plates.  Some of them would affirm from our calls and then neglect us after.  That didn't make us feel like VIPs...  I wish they would also orient us on how to use the electric stove.  We had to call for assistance to find out the pressing the power button twice would switch it on.  Good thing too that it was in Chinese characters so we understood what was low, medium and high.  Each table could seat 12 people.  We're exactly 24 so we were able to avail of the big group promoand had 2 persons free.

four seasons hotpot city
There were various stations all with a large heading on topI noticed that many don't pay much attention to what's written on the chalk boards though.

four seasons hotpot cityfour seasons hotpot city
Upon being seated, we were asked for our soup broth: Chicken, Pork, Vegetable or SinigangYou can get a refill but changing broth would be difficult.

Bread Station
The buffet doesn't limit itself to a shabu-shabu buffetThere's a Bread Station which only had a baguette and butter.

Sashimi Station
four seasons hotpot city

There are lots of Sashimi and Maki options.  For Sashimi, there were Salmon Sashimi (always emptied fast!), Squid, Kani, Tuna and TamagoMakis include Crunchy Salmon Roll, Futo Maki, Kani Tongga, Pink Maki Roll, Ebi Tempura Roll, Four Seasons Special (this is a must try!) and California Maki.

Sushi
four seasons hotpot city

From the Sushi section, I recommend the Spicy Tuna.  Other options include:Salmon Sushi, Tuna Sushi, Saba Sushi (I wished they had a Sashimi version of this), Squid Sushi, Tamago Sushi, Kani Sushi and Mango Sushi.

Sushi Bar
four seasons hotpot city
Unnoticeable to many, there a sushi bar with a chalk board label of Salmon Sashimiby the cooked dishes and the Fish Station where you can request for fresh slices of Salmon Sashimi.

Salad Station
four seasons hotpot city
There's a do-it-yourself salad bar with three choices of dressing:Caesar, Dijon Mustard and Thousand Island.

Appetizer Station
four seasons hotpot cityfour seasons hotpot city
There was an assortment ofCanapes andCold Cuts including Ngoyong Roll, Beef Shin, Smoked Chicken, Century Egg, Kimchi Raddish and Spicy Pork Mask.

Tofu Station

four seasons hotpot city
Not much variety at the Tofu Stationso theNoodle Station occupied half the chiller.  The Mochi Shio looks enticing in its pink wrapper.  We initially thought it was for dessert, but we were informed by the staff that we're supposed to cook it.  It's actually just plain mochi and its cooked version tastes like bilo-bilo.  If you like the Peanut Balls eaten during Chinese Lantern Festivals like I do, go for the Mochi Shio (Peanut) in brown wrapper.

Noodles Station
four seasons hotpot city
Lots of noodle variantsThey are usual ones we encounter elsewhere like the Bihon, ShanghaiNoodles, Udon Noodles, Hongkong Noodles, Sotanghon(my nephew feasted himself with this!), Korean Noodle, Dried Hofan, Ramen Noodle (the instant type), Shelled Macaroni and Macaroni.  I'd suggest trying more of the specialty ones like the Spicy Noodles, Mushroom Noodles (the family loved this!), Carrot Noodles, Polonchay Noodles and Squid Ink Noodles.

Vegeterian Station
four seasons hotpot city
The Vegetarian Station has more tofu items than the Tofu Station.  Tofu variants here are: Fresh Tofu, Japanese Tofu (We loved this as it's silky and smooth!), Black Tofu (Couldn't tell the difference fro other tofu really...), White Tofu, Brown Tofu and Beancurd Stick.  The other interesting stuff I meant were Fried Tao Pao, Water Chestnuts, Guso, Black Fungus, White Fungus and Seaweeds.

Dumplings Station
four seasons hotpot city
While I'm not fond of dumplings, I was intrigued by their extensive selection of Beef Balls, Pork Mushroom, Squid Ball, Chicken Ball, Lobster Ball(looked like balls with kani sticks), Chicken Dumplings, Green Beijing Dumplings, Beef Curry Dumpling (A bit spicy and I enjoyed it!), Chili w/ Meat Dumplings,Kuchay Dumpling, Shanghai Meat Dumpling and Beijing Meat Dumpling.  I was looking for the Mozzarella Balls raved by many.  I spotted Richard of Tales From the Tummy and Abet of the Food Alphabet coincidentally dining there too or rather they were surprised to see a lot of versions of me (my little sisters=p) and figured I was there too.  Richard explained told me that it was there during his first visit but it isn't available this time due to supplier problems.

four seasons hotpot city
There's more dumplings on another chiller likeShrimp & Scallop Balls, Shrimp Ball, Cuttlefish Noodle, Ebi Shrimp Paste, Squid Paste, Shrimp Egg Dumpling, Shanghai Meat Wanton, Shanghai Dumpling, Hongkong Wanton andSharkfin Dumpling.  Since none of these enticed me, I skipped these for better options.

Pork Station
four seasons hotpot city
The Pork Station is one of the most expansive stations aside from theDumpling StationIt includes parts that you usually find in the streets but you can see them very clean.  There's Pork Isaw, Pork Feet,Pork Skin, Pork Tito, Pork Blood,Pork Ear, Pork Lung Tube,Large Intestine, Pork Egg Isaw(This is a first time for me and I liked it!)...

four seasons hotpot city
Pork Liver, Pork Slice, Pork Tendon, Pork Intestineand Pig's KidneyDid they miss any part?

Beef & Chicken Station
four seasons hotpot city
There's not much of the Beef Selections as they were limited to the Marinated Beef, Beef Shin, Beef Tito and Beef Tripe which I'd suggest to skipChicken selections include: Drunker Chicken andChicken Liver There's alsoFried Quail Eggwhich I don't get the point of because you'll be cooking it again...

Sliced Meat Station (Only Available During Dinner and Weekends)
four seasons hotpot city
Beef Short Ribs (center), Beef Striploin (right), Pork Jowls (down), Lamb (left) and Pork Belly (up)
I'm so glad we ate during dinner time because the Sliced Meat Station was the best part of the buffet.  To order simply feel up the order slip with your table number and what you want.  Choices are: (1) Beef Short Ribs (You must order this!  I had a plateful of this all for myself.)  (2) Beef Striploin (3) Beef shortplate (4) Pork Jowls (5) Pork Neck (6) Pork Belly (If you like bacon, get this!) (7) Lamb (If you like lamb, definitely order this!  It was very clean-tasting).  Upon ordering, the server will bring plates of your order to your table.

Fresh Seafood Station
four seasons hotpot city
I was expecting interesting items from the Seafood Station from the blogs I've read like Lobster and Frog Legs.  But, I guess we weren't as lucky.  Selections available during our visit were Fresh Shrimp, Leather Jacket, Sea Mantis, Fresh Alimasag (these were skinny but good thing there's a bigger crab among the cooked dishes), Imelda Head, Clams, Squid Ring, Yellow Eel (Ugh! This had a very very fishy taste even when cooked well), Gindara (later on replaced by Cream Dory), Talakitok (the big center fish) and Mussels.  I tried everything here and the Gindara was the only item I found worthy of the stomach space.  I somehow wished I grabbed more before they ran out of it.

Vegetable Section
four seasons hotpot city
My favorite station is the Vegetable Station because it had my favorite vegetables: Polonchay and Watercrest.  And, it also has so many kinds of mushrooms which I'm crazy for like the Golden Mushroom, Straw Mushroom, Oyster Mushroom, Beijing Mushroomand Shitake Mushroom (These were rubbery for some reason).  It also includes some add-ons like Sampalok for the Sinigang Broth.

four seasons hotpot city
To enhance the broths or create your own dip, there's a lots of condiments and sauces available.  They are two stations like this with similar content.  You can be adventurous by adding Peanut Butter or go with classic options likeHoisin Sauce, Oyster Sauce and Sate Sauce.

Cooked Station and Tempura Station
four seasons hotpot city
Aside from the Steamed Crab, I skipped the rest.  As usual in every buffet, the Tempura Station with Ebi Tempura and Vegetable Tempura is popular and quickly emptied.  There's also Fried Wanton HK Style, Fried Beancurn Roll and Fried Rice.

Dessert Station
four seasons hotpot city
Dessert Selectionis similar to its sister company Vikings.  It includesColorful Cakes, Fresh Fruits...

four seasons hotpot city
Kakanin, Frozen Yogurt, Chocolate Fondue, Ice Cream and Crepe.

four seasons hotpot city
I'm always a fan of their Green Tea Ice Cream.

four seasons hotpot city
Drinks are also the same as Vikings but this had an addition of Arizona Iced Tea and Chang Beer (Thailand Brand).

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
We all had fun with the individual pot but still in the same table together experience that Four Seasons Hotpot City offered.  Having tried, several eat-all-you-can shabu-shabu in the past, that was a first-time for us.  Quality-wise, I thought it was a good bargain with the Sliced Meat included.  Without it, I'd rather pass even at a lesser rate.  We're eager to see more they were to offer with their Premium Station (which is still closed at the moment)

Schneeballen: Smashing the Kaffe Coconut With a Wooden Mallet! (SM Mall of Asia)

$

We were shopping at SM Mall of Asiawhen I was surprised that my mom disappeared of somewhere.  Then, I received her call to meet herat Scheeballen(Of course, I didn't know what she was referring to the call was quite long before I found the family all gathered there).

schneeballen philippines
We were totally clueless what language Schneeballen.  But, the red lettering "BALL" and the colorful ball displays hinted to us that it was some kind of ball-shaped food.

schneeballen philippines
The staff was very accommodating.  She handed us all their brochure.  It was quite informative.  We learned that Schneeballen is a Korean brand.  But, the concept of the Schneeballen originated from Bayaria in SouthGermany.  It is the traditional cookie of Rothenburg.  It is a round pastry usually coated in powdered sugar.  Schneeballen translated to "snowball" in English.  But, this is quite different to the usual snowball pastry I've encountered like my favorite Snowball made by Mountain maid in Baguio.  This is really big and eaten by smashing it into bits using a wooden mallet.

In Korea, it created a big wave as they have long lines for it.  It even has its own cafeIt even has famous brand ambassadors likeTiger JK and Yoon Mirae.

schneeballen philippines
On the shelves, we colorful Schneeballens with labels and prices.  You can also see them in foils where they will be smashed.  After a few minutes, we finally resolved to a majority decision of trying out the Kaffe Coconut Schneeball (150 php).

The video shows my mom's excited smashing action.

schneeballen philippines
Kaffe Coconut Schneeball (150 php)
So this is our smashed Kaffe Coconut Schneeball which is a described as a combination of sweet coconut and coffee flavor.  Frm the looks of it, it was to be eaten like chips.  We enjoyed the crunchiness but it was disappointing in terms of flavor.  It has an overly sweet coating and dusted with artificially flavored coconut and coffee.  We took this home for breakfast paired with coffee or tea so we could eat it.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Scheeballen is an interesting concept.  As foodies, we're always excited to try new things and this is a perfect encapsulated moment in our memories.  However, this cute de-stressing concept may not be well-recepted here in the Philippines as it is in Korea.  Perhaps, it isdue to lack of marketing.

Yoree Korean Barbecue Dining: Authentic Korean Charcoal Grill (Forum South Global BGC)

Revisiting Forum South Global after quite some time, I'm surprised thatSeven on 7th Bistro Modern has been replaced by Yoree Korean Barbecue Dining.

yoree korean dining
I didn't know what to expect.  Judging from the outside, it seems high-end

yoree korean dining
As I went in, my assertions were correct.  It was a grand spacious Korean restaurant indeed.  Even Sariwon is no match in terms of size and seating capacity.

yoree korean dining
I love the interiors as even the floor has eccentric details.

yoree korean dining
It has a high-ceiling that keep the place well ventilated and cool even during full-capacity with each table a charcoal grill as we've experienced during our dinner.

yoree korean dining
After taking our orders, we were given a flat napkin which was later on poured with hot water to expand.

Food
yoree korean dining

Their complimentarybanchanincludes: Kimchi, PickleandMuchim (seasoned cucumber).

There's also spicy vegetables that's a perfect add-on to every barbecue dish.

The lettuce, carrot sticks and chili are refillable.

These are also provided for dipping.

Hae Mool Pa Jeon (200 php)
The Hae Mool Pa Jeon is pancake with clam meat, octopus, shrimp and green onion.  This is one of the best pa jeon I've tried!

seafood jap chae
Seafood Jap Chae (250 php)
The Seafood Jap Chae is sauteed vegetables with beef, carrots, shrimp, mushroom in sweet potato noodles.  This is another hit among us!  This is the most extravagant and satisfyingjap chae I've had yet.

gyeran jjim
Gyeran Jjim (130 php)
I've always loved steamed egg like the JapaneseChawan Mushi.  But, this is surprisingly the first time I've tried the Korean rendition.  The Gyeran Jjim which is a steamed egg on hot stone is very good because it's not jelly-like but more on the fluffly scrambled side.  And, yet it's not dried, rough but soft and runny.  I hope to encounter more of this in the future.

jeonju dolsot bibimbap
Jeonju Dolsot Bibimbab (380 php)
The
Jeonju Dolsot Bibimbabis a stone-ware bibimbap with egg, seaweed, vegetables: cucumber,  raddish, carrots and sprouts, cheese and  beef strips.  This is another top-notch dish by Yoree.

haemool soon tofu
Haemool Soon Tofu (380 php)
The Haemool Soon Tofu is soft tofu stew with seafood.  The default is served at medium spicy.  But, you can request to go less or even further.  I'm very impressed with this dish because you can taste the wild spicy kick together with the sweet seafood flavors hand in hand.  The tofu being soft, smooth and silky is another plus.

Charcoal Barbecue on the Table
gochujang samgyupsal
Gochujang Samgyupsal (150 g) (400 php)
After being impressed with the first few dishes we ordered, I found out that the charcoal barbecue at Yoree is the highlight of the dinner.  The Gochujang Samgyupsal which is sliced pork belly and garlic with red pepper sauce is one of the best (if not the best) samgyupsal I've encountered.  It was so good that I didn't feel any guilt... just purely pleasure in devouring over it.  It is cooked with garlic and served with additional kimchi.

The Yangnyum Galbi 280g is seasoned short rib marinated with sweet and savory sauce with vegetable, shrimp and squid.

wagyu kkot deugnsim

The Yangnyum Galbi 280g is wagyu ribeye steak with mushroom.  It's "wagyu" need I say more?

Desserts
pot bingsu
Pot Bing-Su (170 php)
The Pot Bing-Su is shaved ice with milk, adzuki and mango.  This is not as extravagant as others I've tried.   But, I loved this the most!  It's simply refreshing especially after a savory meal.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Yoree Korean Barbecue Dining is one of the best authentic Korean Charcoal dining restaurants in the Metro.  And, it's unmatched in terms of elegance too.  I'd recommend dining here if you're looking for quality Korean barbecue with excellent ambiance and service to boot.  But, note that it does come with the price.

Baskin Robbins: It's Back and We're Trying it Again (BHS Central Square BGC)

I can still remember my pre-teen years when billiards and bowling was the "in" thing.  Whether it's with family or classmates, we'd play at Robinson's Place Manila. After that I'd buy my favorite Cinnamon Pretzel from Auntie Anne's and cap my snack off with a single cone of Pistachio Ice Cream from Baskin Robins located just outside the bowling center.  Later on, the craze faded and I rarely visited that side and when I did, Baskin Robbins had already closed down.

When I heard that it opened at Central Square, I persistently convinced the family to have our dessert there.   It was a rainy day but as you can see, there are still lines

The relation of our mood with food is undeniable.  Every once in awhile, we have this unexplainable yearning for certain dishes to bring comfort to our soulThat's what Mood Food, a new coffee table book by Chef JP Angloin cooperation with Russell Hobbs is all about.

mood food
I was fortunate enough to be invited to Sarsa, the successful and popular restaurant owned byChef JP Anglo himself, for his cooking demonstration on the recipes included in Mood Food.

Sweet Potato Chips with Spicy Chocolate Dip
mood food
With simple ingredients like sweet potato.  You can transform it into a magical dish that will delight your crunchy cravings when you're alone watching tv or in a bonding moment with the company of friend sand family.  Chef JP Anglocovered them with olive oil.

and then added a little salt...

mood food
put them in the Russell Hobbs Purifry Health Fryer and set it first for 5 minutes to be sure.  You can later on adjust for longer time depending on the thickness of your chips and the quantity of your batch.

And, tada!!!

Longganisa Panini
mood food
Using the Russell Hobbs Panini Maker, you can cook grill your longganisa.  According to Chef JP Anglo, you can cook a lot of things using this.  He even cooks his bacon and steak there and he loves how easy it is to clean.

Look at that!  The perfect snack to delight your taste buds.

French Toast with Dip
Using the Russell Hobbs Hand Blender, Chef JP Anglo easily prepared the 3 Cheese Dip.

Then, the grilled bread triangles using the same Russell Hobbs Panini Maker.

Combine the two together and you have this amazing dish ofGrilled Bread Triangles with Roasted Pepper and 3 Cheese Dip.

Strawberry Smoothie
Place all the components into the Russell Hobbs Illumina Blender...

The nice suction base and silent mechanism of the blender allowed Chef JP Anglo to prepare our smoothies in an effortless manner.

Our Strawberry Smoothies was so good!

I can't wait to check out and try the recipes in Mood Foodand using my Russel Hobbsappliances.  I happen to own the same Russell Hobbs Hand Blender thatChef JP Anglo used.  Check out my post on Russel Hobbshere.
